Chapter 38: Still Climbing
------
The moment they cleared the first floor, a metallic door appeared before them and they walked through it and appeared before another flight of stairs.
They didn’t hesitate and climbed it.
Another door welcomed them and when they entered, the melancholic voice resounded in their heads once more.
[Welcome to the second floor]
[Clear the puzzle before you may pass through]
[Time limit: twenty minutes]
And just as the voice said, a long bridge stretched out before them, with multiple times outlining its surface.
On the other side of the bridge stood another large door.
"So we just cross the bridge," Lucius said, already stepping forward.
"Wait—" Damon exclaimed, but before his words could reach Lucius’ ear— he stepped on one of the tiles and a huge wave of energy slammed into him, sending him flying backwards.
"Why are you always so hyperactive," Damon face-palmed. "If you had just waited and listened, you wouldn’t be on the floor."
"Well how was I supposed to know," Lucius stood up abruptly, dusting his body.
Reed stepped forward and squatted in front of one of the tiles of the bridge.
Closing his eyes, he let his essence flow out of his body and into the surrounding area.
"These tiles react to essence and weight too—" Reed muttered.under his breath.
"I see," Damon’s eyes narrowed beneath his circular glass frame. "So basically we need to regulate our essence in a way that would influence our weight."
"And how do we do that?" Lucius walked over, a small frown on his face.
"Like this—"
The essence in Damon’s body suddenly dropped to such a level that it almost felt like he had run out of essence.
He stepped onto the tile except this time, he wasn’t sent flying.
"Hmmmmmm! Let me give it a try—" Theon said, walking forward, his essence already dropping.
He stepped onto the tile and just like Damon he wasn’t sent flying as well.
The rest of them followed suit.
It took them about ten minutes to cross the bridge since there were some tiles that required them to increase their weight.
"That was annoying," Lucius muttered under his breath as he stepped down from the last tile.
"You should be grateful that it wasn’t something difficult." Damon replied.
"That’s enough," Amy’s voice suddenly resounded.
"Yeah, let’s move on— we are wasting to much time." Reed agreed already walking forward to push the door open.
Theon stared at them quietly. Someone might have asked why he was so quiet.
Well, it was simply because he saw no need to talk, and arguing with someone like Lucius would just wear him out. Right now, he was trying to preserve his mental health.
Who did he learn this from?
Reed of course.
The guy was always silent and Theon could see why now.
Because it seemed like since they stepped into the second phase, Lucius hadn’t bothered him as much as before.
The door soon swung open and the melancholic voice sounded in their heads again signifying that they had passed the trial.
Like so, they continued to clear the trials with ease. Though after the tenth floor, the trials started becoming progressively harder.
In some they were required to fight hundreds of F rank beasts— in some it required them to use their heads but they mostly left that to Reed and Damon.
Soon, three hours passed and they now stood in front of a door that seemed much larger and majestic than all the other doors they had come across.
The door swung open and the voice resounded in their heads once more.
[Welcome to the 49th Floor]
[Objective: Defeat the enemies before you]
[Time Limit: Thirty Minutes]

Meanwhile, within the Arena, multiple students could be seen gathered within the center of the Arena.
Countless murmurs could be heard, mostly from the first years who stood at the center of the arena.
"Hasn’t the second phase ended, where is the instructor to call an end to this."
"Yeah, I mean at this point all the students have already been eliminated."
"No! There is still one group of students within the Tower of Trials." frёewebηovel.cѳm
"What? How? Even Claire’s group was Eliminated at the 36th floor."
"Well, the Star Goddess’s group is still within and they’re at the 49th Floor now." freёweɓnovel.com
"That’s impossible—"
"See for yourself." The student gestured towards one of the screens that displayed Theon landing the finishing blow on a large behemoth type beast.
Lightning and darkness erupted as he slashed at the beast multiple times in succession before landing a safe distance away from the beast.
He sheathed his sword calmly and the beast’s body dissected into multiple pieces before falling to the ground.
Gasps of shock erupted in the crowd. No. The crowd has been gasping the moment they saw the rate and speed at which Theon’s group had been clearing the floors.
Multiple of the special guest had already cemented Theon’s face to their memory. With everything he had shown them today, it was clear he was a genius.
"This boy keeps dropping surprises after surprises," The director whispered to himself. "Perhaps I should’ve listened to Rebecca that day."
A deep feeling of regret hit him knowing that Rebecca has already claimed rights over him.
If it really was possible that he had a second awakening, then it would mean having him in his family would be of huge benefit to him.
"Sadly that woman already claimed him," The director sighed then, like a light bulb appearing over his head, a thought passed through his head.
"Maybe there is another way to bring him into my family— but I can’t be sure yet. He still hasn’t shown enough to guarantee that he deserves to be at the top."

Meanwhile, back in the Tower of Trials.
[Welcome to the 50th floor]
[Objective: Find the One truth. Only one path leads upwards. Three wrong choices = failure]
[Time limit: One hour]
"The last floor huh?" Theon whispered. "Let’s get this over with."
