Chapter 655: Chapter 655: Activating the Shameless Mode
Suddenly, the door swung open with a crash.
Tong Fusheng’s eyes filled with hope; he knew Gu Dahuan had a soft heart.
Three heads peeked out of the door – Man Er, Xiao Long, and Yaozu.
"It smells awful. If you don’t leave, we’ll throw water on you."
As Man Er finished speaking, a maid-like girl came out carrying a basin of water, scaring Tong Fusheng’s family of three into running away.
Afraid of being late, they didn’t want to endure being covered in water and manure in the freezing weather.
Grandma Gu was sitting at the door picking bean seeds.
A stench hit her, and she looked up to see the three people covered in filth running towards her.
Out of fright, Grandma Gu almost knocked over her basket of beans and jumped behind a haystack.
"Lady Gu."
Mrs. Wang could no longer bear it and, seeing Grandma Gu as a savior, reached out to grab her.
Scared, Grandma Gu flailed her arms: "Don’t come near, who are you calling lady?"
Tong Fusheng and Tong Zhijie stopped with Mrs. Wang.
Mrs. Wang, trembling, called out: "Dear in-law, I’m Dajiao’s sister-in-law..."
She pointed behind her: "This is her brother, and that’s her nephew."
Grandma Gu retreated further into the haystack and asked loudly: "What’s with your looks?"
These three were the brother, sister-in-law, and nephew of her eldest daughter-in-law?
You really couldn’t tell.
Only their eyes were visible; they were truly filthy.
Grandma Gu felt a rush of satisfaction.
She had always disliked Tong Dajiao’s brother and sister-in-law, who frequently freeloaded from her eldest son’s family. She was puzzled how someone as formidable as Tong Dajiao was so compliant with them.
"Which manure pit did you fall into?" Grandma Gu asked.
Tong Fusheng and Mrs. Wang were stumped by the question.
They were too embarrassed to say they were splashed by Tong Pandi.
It was simply too humiliating for them as parents.
Tong Zhijie grabbed a handful of straw, wiped his face, and said with a long face, "Grandma Gu, we were splashed by Tong Pandi..."
As he spoke, he cursed Tong Pandi.
Grandma Gu’s lips twitched.
Tong Pandi really dared to go all out.
Her eldest daughter-in-law was already tough, but Tong Pandi surpassed her.
But what did that have to do with her?
Stopping to complain to her, what comfort could she offer?
She wanted to applaud, wondering why they weren’t drowned in a manure pit.
"Hurry back to your Black Dragon Pond; you’re dirtying my doorstep," Grandma Gu said.
Mrs. Wang moved closer to the haystack.
Grandma Gu, scared, wanted to scream, her hands moving frantically.
"Lady Gu," Mrs. Wang opened her mouth with a grin and stepped forward, saying, "Dear in-law, we can’t go home like this. You’re always kind-hearted; could we use your water to clean up before we leave?"
This filthy state had to be cleaned up.
It wasn’t even the end of January, and the ice in the river hadn’t melted; even if it had, washing there would freeze them solid.
With no entry to Tong Huaqiong’s home and Tong Pandi barring them, they had to ask Tong Huaqiong’s mother-in-law for water to wash up.
Mrs. Wang didn’t mention she also wanted to borrow three sets of clothes.
"What? Wash at my place?"
Grandma Gu’s eyes widened.
What are you thinking?
Tong Dajiao is Tong Fusheng’s full sister, Tong Pandi his own daughter; still, it’s not for our Gu family’s old home to clean them up.
Look at how they’re dressed; who would welcome them?
Barging in with such audacity.
"My home isn’t a garbage dump for any dirty things to enter!"
"What nonsense? Look at yourselves; you could be fertilizer for the field. Why not wash in the river? I don’t have water."
Grandma Gu coldly refused.
Just because she’s old, they thought she was easy?
If anyone could get something from her, she’d consider it a loss.
Mrs. Wang pleaded, "Dear in-law, have mercy. How can we go home like this? We’ll suffocate halfway there; we only came to you because we had no choice. We’re family, how can you bear to see us like this?"
Mrs. Wang thought there was goodwill between her and Grandma Gu.
When Gu Honglian was just born, she visited Tong Dajiao for benefits and gave Grandma Gu twenty eggs.
Weren’t twenty eggs worth a bucket of water?
Grandma Gu remained unmoved, refusing: "What kind of distant relative are you? Even Tong Dajiao doesn’t acknowledge you. Don’t fabricate relations. If your daughter can hardheartedly splash you, why can’t I bear to see you like this?"
The stench overwhelmed her.
The eldest daughter-in-law was now equally difficult with both her family and her husband’s family, giving Grandma Gu some sense of balance.
Mrs. Wang’s face changed in anger.
She never imagined she’d be humiliated like this at Qinghe Bay, having to curry favor with both her younger sister-in-law and her own daughter, and now begging her younger sister-in-law’s mother-in-law.
Tong Fusheng coughed.
In Grandma Gu’s memory, Tong Fusheng always appeared pompous, wearing a scholar’s cap, a blue gown, never speaking without quoting sages.
Now drenched in dung, he couldn’t maintain his previous dignified demeanor.
Grandma Gu only felt delight.
"Why aren’t we relatives? We’re Gu Jingzhe’s uncle and aunt; as the saying goes, uncles are important. We’re not asking for grand hospitality, just to enter and clean up, to borrow clothes. Lady Gu, if we sever ties today, in the future, when Tong Dajiao’s in mourning, it’s still the family who takes precedence."
Mrs. Wang’s words carried a hint of threat.
She glanced at Tong Fusheng.
Earlier the two reviewed at home the changes in Tong Dajiao’s attitude towards her family, unanimously suspecting the in-laws had instigated it.
Otherwise why did Grandma Gu and Mr. Gu return to Qinghe Bay after Tong Dajiao became successful?
Why return to Qinghe Bay?
It was to enjoy life.
"I’m just an old lady; not letting you in, do you want to bully me? What nonsense about relatives; tell that to Dajiao, it has nothing to do with me," Grandma Gu snapped at Mrs. Wang’s words, glancing at the silent Tong Fusheng and shouting, "If you don’t leave now, I’m calling for help."
Did they think an old lady was easy to bully or what?
The Gu family’s old house never liked the Tong family and wasn’t afraid to break ties.
Besides, if a fight broke out, the Gu family would only support her, not these three.
If Tong Dajiao took her family’s side, even better; she wanted a reason to express her dissatisfaction with her to the Gu family.
Tong Zhijie stepped forward angrily: "You old hag, you eat and drink what my aunt gives; why can’t we borrow clothes from your house?"
Tong Zhijie had been splashed with the most manure by Tong Pandi, and he smelled the strongest.
When his face drew near Grandma Gu, she turned her head and vomited.
"Ugh!"
Grandma Gu grabbed some straw and, using it gingerly, pushed Tong Zhijie and Mrs. Wang away before scampering back into the house.
The smell was unbearable.
Tong Zhijie: "..."
Mrs. Wang, quick-witted, followed to the Gu family’s old house.
She felt miserable, with no time for hesitation, determined to borrow clothes from Grandma Gu.
To repay the frustration from her younger sister-in-law and Tong Pandi.
She didn’t hesitate to play the rogue.
When Grandma Gu turned around and saw Mrs. Wang, it was like seeing a ghost, trembling as she reached for the door latch.
They misunderstood what she said; clinging like a pest.
Before she could latch the door, Mrs. Wang wedged herself halfway inside.
Soon after, Tong Fusheng and Tong Zhijie reached the door, and with the three of them pushing, the door swung open again.
Grandma Gu couldn’t resist and fell to the ground.
