Chapter 302: Chapter 300: The Holy Daughter Sleeps Peacefully
"Mr. Rose, I... I really didn’t meditate straight through to the next day?"
Looking at the still bright sky overhead, with the sun slowly descending, Hilia struggled to tell if this was sunset or sunrise.
She checked the time repeatedly: eight o’clock at night. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Finally, she had to admit one thing: "Night comes far later in Kost than it does in Huijin City."
Rose chuckled, "The sun’s just about to set now. By the time you reach your target area, it’ll be pretty much dark."
"That’s true."
Hilia nodded, left her resting place at the inn, and stepped out onto the street. She wandered around, found a deserted spot, disguised herself, and only then continued on.
Rose gave her a vague sense of direction.
"In that direction, about ten kilometers away."
Ten kilometers was the range Rose could easily scan at the moment—a number which had increased after the sealing array fractured.
"Let me check the map over there..."
Hilia opened her wristband, carefully examined the map, compared the area ten kilometers away, and then went to the roadside to flag down a carriage, rolling along at a leisurely pace.
Ten kilometers passed quickly by flying or express train, but via ordinary carriage was slow. Only when the sun finally dipped, and daylight waned, did Hilia arrive nearby.
After disembarking and paying, she looked around at her surroundings, involuntarily furrowing her brow.
This was the main road into central Kost. On both sides, makeshift houses built from all kinds of materials lined the way.
The corners of every house, without exception, were crammed with garbage. Two open sewers ran beside the road, each pitch black inside. There was no fluctuation of demonic qi pollution, but Hilia still felt those black waters more terrifying than demonic qi.
The carriage driver, about to leave, called out a warning: "Miss, this is the slum district. Cleanly dressed ladies like you are prime targets for all sorts of shady types. You’d best be careful."
With that, the driver hastily sped away, worried he’d meet his end here if he stuck around.
Hilia glanced back at the departing carriage, barely ready to act before she sensed several pairs of eyes, all brimming with disgusting intent, from nearby.
The girl’s brows knit; she felt uneasy.
"I’ve already disguised myself as the most utterly ordinary girl possible. Why are these people still looking at me with such vile eyes?"
"To those types, even a sow is prettier than an elf." Rose reached out and tapped Hilia’s forehead; her figure began to fade from sight.
To mages, she remained visible as usual; to ordinary people, she was cloaked in fog—blurred like a mosaic, impossible to see clearly no matter how they tried.
So the bolder ones tried to close in for a better look—and maybe to ’hit on’ her.
But as soon as they got within three meters of Hilia, they felt a bone-chilling cold—a warning that if they kept approaching, they’d freeze solid. frёeωebɳovel.com
And their fate? Just what they fantasized the girl’s to be.
Casually dealing with these creeps, Hilia sighed softly. "Why is it every poor place has such weird people..."
Rose remarked dryly, "Poverty plus dense population makes for the perfect breeding ground for chaos and crime."
Hilia nodded gently and quickly left.
Using the physical boost of her tier, Hilia jumped straight onto the roof of a nearby house. She paused to sense the area, pulled out her flying broom, added a layer of black disguise to herself and the broom, then flew low toward her target.
"It’s so great there’s no air prohibition here."
Night fell. Flying low on her broom, she was nearly impossible to spot without array surveillance—especially with the bonus of nighttime camouflage.
Moments later, Hilia arrived in the air above the spot Rose had indicated, landing atop a nearby building.
At this point, her appearance changed—from nondescript girl to nondescript boy.
Worried she’d lash out if she got angry at those nasty stares, Hilia went for a more thorough disguise.
"Girls are likely to draw ill-intentions; that shouldn’t happen to boys, right?" the girl muttered.
She looked down and saw a small clearing ringed by several houses.
The ground was strewn with gravel, atop which sat two tables. About twenty people were seated, eating.
Hilia tried to sense them; too far away to tell much, she turned to Rose for help: "Are all those people below heretics?"
Rose nodded slightly. "Yes and no. They only have faint traces of demonic qi pollution—can’t really tell."
"Then I’ll get closer and check."
Hilia quietly soared over, landing on a house bordering the clearing, ears pricked to listen.
They seemed to be just drinking and chatting, discussing whose kid next door was good-looking, soft-skinned, or whatever.
Hilia listened for a while and realized the kid they talked about wasn’t a girl, but... a boy?
"..."
Hilia silently changed her disguise, reverting to her previous ordinary girl form.
Boys are pretty dangerous, too.
"Seems like nothing valuable here..."
Hilia muttered, feeling she could leave; the drunks below were only getting less reliable.
But just as she got up to leave, she heard someone below mention the Mage League.
The girl immediately sat back down, listening intently.
"The Mage League’s coming up. These next few days’ll be rough."
"Keeping a low profile’s a good idea—if you piss off a mage lord by accident, you could die and never know how."
"Those mages won’t come here. If they did, we’d get a taste of what a mage lord’s like."
"Heh, acting so cocky—could you even take them on?"
"If I can’t win, I can still use tricks, can’t I? No matter how strong, one bottle of Essence of the Dark Dream and even the toughest will have to sleep!"
"Essence of the Dark Dream really is a treasure—not much effect on ordinary folks, but works wonders on mages. Amazing stuff."
"It really is incredible, hahahahaha."
Among the chatting crowd below, one burst out laughing.
The rest joined in, roaring with laughter.
Moments later, their laughter ceased abruptly, almost as if a script had cut them off.
Then, the man who’d laughed first peered up at the rooftop where Hilia was hiding.
"Hey, friend, rooftops get chilly at night. Come on down, join us for some drinks and fun—let loose and go wild."
Everyone looked up at once, robotic, staring right at Hilia’s hiding place.
"When did I get exposed?"
Hilia blinked, puzzled; then suddenly her eyelids felt heavy.
Rose’s quiet laughter echoed in her ears.
"That Essence of the Dark Dream really is a delight—colorless, tasteless, minimal side effects. A real friend for sleep. Go ahead, sleep. You haven’t had a decent night since all that training. Rest easy. Leave the rest to me."
The girl’s lips curved in a smile as she closed her eyes, peacefully.
