Chapter 1073: Chapter 1073: Shi Lei’s Heavy Pressure
For Liu Yiqing, today’s surgery was a huge deal. So the matter of adding a few extra dishes to the slightly late lunch was something that absolutely had to be settled.
But Liu Banxia wasn’t that ruthless either; she just casually added two more dishes to make a show of it and be done. After all, she was about to become a mortgage slave, and the days ahead wouldn’t be all that easy.
"Honestly, Dr. Liu’s gotten better at handling her emotions now." Li Liwei said with a smile.
"Teacher Li, really?" Liu Yiqing asked, delighted.
"Of course. Take what happened today—never mind when you first came, even if it had happened six months ago, you could forget about bouncing back in just a few days." Li Liwei said.
"This is growth, solid, real growth. It’s not just improvement in medical skills, it’s also the tempering of your mindset. Even though Director Liu doesn’t like praising people, what we should praise, we still have to praise."
"Hehe, thank you, Teacher Li." Liu Yiqing said.
"If we’re being honest, if you want to evaluate a surgeon, you guys who are always in the operating room actually have the most say." Liu Banxia said.
"Well, think about it. We can’t directly do surgery for patients, true, but we’re always watching from our support positions." Li Liwei said.
"You only rush to the OR on surgery days. Us? Every day is a surgery day; we’re doing operations every single day. We might not be able to articulate that much, but we develop a sort of feel for things."
"Exactly. From now on, I’ll leave their evaluations to you. I’ll collect the information once a month; I’m really saving myself a ton of trouble." Liu Banxia said.
The slightly smug Li Liwei was suddenly dumbfounded.
What the heck? Why is all this kind of work being dumped on me? Joking around for fun is one thing, but when it comes to how a surgery actually went, who can spell that out clearly?
"Teacher Li, you got tricked. Teacher Liu is often like this." Liu Yiqing said with a laugh.
Li Liwei gave Liu Banxia a very helpless look; he’d finally experienced how "cheeky" this guy was—way too cheeky.
"Jokes are jokes, but the evaluations still have to be done. I’m not asking you to judge their surgical quality, but to look at their overall performance on the table." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"I can’t be trailing after them every single day; I have to gather some information about them. Like what happened today—later on, when I asked you what her reaction was at the time, I was also trying to do an evaluation."
"After the happy part, we still need a review. It only counts as barely passing. I dare say if it had been Xu Yino or Su Wenhao today, they definitely wouldn’t have reacted the same way you did."
"Don’t be fooled by how one of them is very impatient and the other is very steady. When it comes to sudden situations, they can adapt quickly and make reasonable judgments."
"But that’s just your temperament—neither hot nor cold, and most of the time your mind is still on the patient. To be able to perform the way you did today is already a success for you personally."
"Thank you, Teacher Liu."
Even though she was being criticized, Liu Yiqing still responded happily.
"Let’s eat first. After we’re done, I have something to announce." Liu Banxia said.
"What is it?" Liu Yiqing asked curiously.
"Something good. For you guys, it’s a huge good thing." Liu Banxia said, squinting as he smiled.
With his tone and expression, not to mention Liu Yiqing, even Cui Jia didn’t believe it was actually something good.
Because they had this on their minds, they all felt the food on their trays wasn’t that tasty anymore.
Liu Banxia, on the other hand, ate with obvious relish. This was great fun.
To Li Liwei, it was quite amusing to watch. Liu Banxia really had the six little ones completely in the palm of his hand; he knew them far too well.
But this also showed something—that Liu Banxia genuinely valued them. If he didn’t, with how busy he was, he wouldn’t have the time to scheme about all this.
After they finished eating and went back to the lobby, Liu Banxia called the other five, plus the other interns and residents in standardized training, into the conference room.
"There are two things we need to discuss." Liu Banxia said.
"First, it’s about the upcoming chief resident work. Later, you can arrange the time yourselves. Whenever you want to give it a try, you can."
"The six of you will rotate in pairs, mainly over on President Qi’s side. Consider it letting you experience it in advance. You could also call it advance training, so that this year we can get you all used to and proficient in the chief resident’s work and up to standard."
Liu Banxia’s words were like dropping a small bomb.
This was a big deal—the chief resident’s job is very important. Starting to expose Xu Yino and the others to it now carried a very strong whiff of deliberate grooming.
"You can think about and discuss this yourselves later. The second issue is the criticism and self-criticism regarding Liu Yiqing’s misdiagnosis today, with a bit of praise mixed in if needed." Liu Banxia continued.
Liu Yiqing hurriedly lowered her head. Although she’d had a feeling, she hadn’t expected Liu Banxia to speak so formally.
"Alright, you guys go discuss it yourselves. I’ll give you fifteen minutes, then you can all get back to work. Don’t think about slacking off, I’ll go out and take a look first." As Liu Banxia spoke, he lifted his wrist and exaggeratedly shook the watch on it.
Xu Yino chuckled, already knowing what the tone of today’s discussion was.
It was just to have everyone sit around and chat, and to comfort Liu Yiqing a bit. There wasn’t the slightest intention of criticizing her. Just going over the process of receiving the patient and going up to the operating room would already eat up most of those fifteen minutes.
"A bunch of heartless people, not one of you even praised my watch." As he reached the door, Liu Banxia muttered a line.
The six little ones and the interns didn’t bother with him at all. They immediately gathered around Liu Yiqing, listening to her talk about what she’d gone through today.
Everyone had only heard that she’d misdiagnosed a case today, but they still weren’t too clear on what exactly had happened.
"Finished explaining everything?" When Liu Banxia walked out, Shi Lei asked.
"Next I’ll let them summarize some experience on their own. Anyway, I think misdiagnoses are something you just can’t completely avoid in a medical career," Liu Banxia said.
Shi Lei nodded. "Missed diagnoses, misdiagnoses, these are all highly likely to happen. Especially when some patients only come to the hospital after dragging it out until they really can’t stand it, in those situations the odds of a missed diagnosis are quite high."
"Some family members can understand, others will seize the opportunity. But I saw that when Liu Yiqing went downstairs, her expression looked pretty good. You settled everything with them?"
"Yeah, I didn’t expect it either. I thought there’d be a lot of arguing," Liu Banxia said.
"Looks like I also misunderstood the patient’s husband at the time. I thought he just wanted to use this chance to make some money. I’ll see later how big a discount we can give them and put in an application."
"Even though there were no problems in terms of diagnostic procedure, there are some things family members don’t understand, so we still need to do some comforting."
"That’s not a big problem. If they really went to the medical affairs department or the Health Construction Commission, the time we’d waste then wouldn’t be worth it," Shi Lei said.
"But this is also a reminder to us that we must do a good job of protecting our junior doctors. That’s your responsibility—who told you to be the Assistant Director in charge of teaching and training?"
"Don’t just talk about me. How are your classes over there?" Liu Banxia asked curiously.
"Sigh... it’s a lot harder than I imagined," Shi Lei let out a breath.
"Preparing lessons takes time, but that’s only one part of it. With a whole classroom full of people, how do you get them engaged? That’s the key issue."
"I’m not as glib-tongued as you. When I lecture, it’s all dry as dust. I’m trying to improve, but the level of difficulty is kinda high."
"And it’s not like it’s over once you’ve finished lecturing. There’s still the final exam afterwards. I really don’t want the class I teach to rank near the bottom. That’d be too embarrassing."
Liu Banxia frowned. "Why put that much pressure on yourself? I think you’re just overthinking it. They also know this is your first time dealing with this kind of work. You weren’t assigned that many classes, right?"
"Exactly because I wasn’t given many, if I still can’t produce some real results, that’d look even worse," Shi Lei said.
"Especially with you, always stirring up some commotion whenever you’re free—of course I have to work hard too. I was just thinking, maybe I should drag you over sometime and have you help me ’diagnose’ what’s going on in the classroom."
"Don’t, I really can’t do that. If I go over there, I’m guessing there’ll only be more students flunking," Liu Banxia quickly said.
"Trust me on this: when it comes to college life, I feel that if you only rely on what’s taught in class and don’t really dig into the books, it’s pretty much useless."
"They’re in a transition period now, still used to getting knowledge from the classroom. You just need to help them get these things straight. Once they feel they’ve learned something, they’ll figure it out themselves."
"And some kids, even if you drag them by the ear, might still not take it in. Don’t give yourself that much pressure. Once you get anxious, you’ll bring that emotion into the classroom."
"Oh right, next time you go teach, bring Su Ying along. When I went to give a talk at the middle school, I brought Qiaoqiao with me, and my mind felt a lot more at ease."
"That really works?" Shi Lei frowned.
"It works, why wouldn’t it? Trust me on this," Liu Banxia said very seriously.
"You just need to dial down how much you’re focusing on it. Right now you’re too focused, so of course you get nervous when you’re lecturing."
"Here’s what you do: have Su Ying change into something simple, carry a backpack, and sit in to listen to your class. You can also rehearse at home. After you get familiar with two or three lessons, I figure you’ll be almost there."
Shi Lei furrowed his brows even more tightly, feeling that Liu Banxia was trying to talk him into something. But then again, it did seem like it might actually help a bit.
Liu Banxia, hands clasped behind his back, wandered off to the side. He really wasn’t just talking through his hat.
Shi Lei was simply too nervous, which was why he was under so much pressure. With a little adjustment, his mood could lighten up a lot, and he’d be able to adapt to the teaching profession much faster.
