Chapter 407: Chapter 407: I’ve Already Chosen Someone
However, Shen Yanchuan didn’t give her the time to dwell on it.
He changed the subject, bringing up the events of the morning court session.
From just a few sentences, Ye Chutang could already imagine the tense standoff.
"So, Lord Xu really has some spine. Even at this stage, he refuses to reveal a single thing." Ye Chutang flexed her gradually warming fingers, but there was no surprise in her expression. She had clearly anticipated this outcome.
Anyone could see that his targeting of Huo Yucheng had to be at someone’s behest—or, to be more accurate, driven by personal gain.
And yet, even now, his lips remained sealed.
Shen Yanchuan said coolly, "I’m afraid it’s not that he doesn’t want to, but that he doesn’t dare."
Ye Chutang sighed. "A shame."
If Xu Jie were willing to make the accusation himself, he could definitely drag the mastermind down with him. But from the looks of it, that’s highly unlikely.
"Ten days. Not too long, but not too short either." Ye Chutang casually tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Uncovering a truth from several years ago in ten days is no easy feat. But finding a scapegoat? That’s more than enough time."
She paused and looked up at the man across from her.
Shen Yanchuan’s gaze was lowered as he simply poured a cup of perfectly warm tea.
Ye Chutang’s brow quirked. ’I have my answer.’
A moment later, a small smile touched her lips.
"It seems His Majesty truly dotes on this son of his."
Shen Yanchuan did not object.
Ye Chutang lifted the carriage curtain and glanced outside.
The snow was falling harder now, blanketing the world in white. The streets were deserted.
Only the sound of the carriage wheels crunching through the thin layer of snow could be heard.
Ye Chutang’s expression was serene, her dark eyes as calm as still water.
’I had my suspicions before. All those things he did... was the Emperor truly unaware?’
’Now, I finally have my answer.’
’In His Majesty’s eyes, his own son was simply confused and made a mistake.’
’He was angry, yes, but he was far from intending to truly punish him for it.’
’A small reprimand to silence the masses would suffice.’
’No wonder he was so fearless.’
’This alone is still not enough to shake him in the slightest.’
Shen Yanchuan watched her.
He knew this wasn’t the outcome she wanted.
After a brief pause, he said, "In any case, after ten days, someone will be held responsible for all of this."
Ye Chutang lowered the curtain and turned to look at him.
The corners of her lips lifted in a faint smile, but her eyes were frosty.
"I know."
Her eyes crinkled, as if she were smiling.
"But I’ve already chosen the most suitable candidate."
’If my choice goes against their plans, well—I hope they enjoy the "surprise." ’
...
"I heard Imperial Father was furious in court today." Xiao Lansi sat on a small, round stool, carefully studying Consort Ru’s expression. "Second Brother has returned to his residence and even summoned an Imperial Physician, claiming he’s feeling unwell."
Consort Ru’s expression was tense.
She, of course, already knew all of this and had immediately ordered Xiao Chengxuan to return to his residence and stay there.
"This is for the best. In such troubled times, the less trouble, the better."
Despite her words, her brow remained tightly furrowed, a clear sign she had not set aside her worries.
Xiao Lansi comforted her in a gentle voice, "There is no need to worry, Mother. Second Brother has always been robust and greatly blessed. A minor ailment won’t hinder him in the slightest. He is sure to recover quickly."
Consort Ru glanced at her, and the tightness in her chest eased somewhat.
"Thank goodness I have you."
