Chapter 632: Chapter 631: Father and Son
This explanation made Xia Sichen blink. His old man said they needed a good talk. About what?
Now that Wenjin wasn’t around, he thought he’d dig into his dad’s heart and see if there was anything his dad wanted to share.
He placed the wine jar on the table, grabbed two large bowls, filled them, and said, "Dad, you didn’t tell me before that you had something big to discuss. But no worries, Wenjin can’t hold her liquor, so it’s just us drinking and chatting!"
Xia Wanqing had just raised his bowl when Xia Sichen immediately clinked it and said, "Dad, the folks in our village drink from big bowls and eat big chunks of meat. I’ll finish this, you do as you please!" Then he gulped down the bowl of wine.
Xia Wanqing laughed and scolded, "You brat, pushing your old man like this! Talking about drinking big bowls and eating big chunks, then telling me to do as I please? What nonsense is that?"
This brat was playing tricks in front of him.
But he didn’t mind and downed the bowl of wine.
Seeing an opportunity, Xia Sichen quickly refilled the bowls and was about to drink again when Xia Wanqing stopped him, "You brat, don’t get drunk. It’s just us today, no outsiders. There’s something I want you to handle!"
Xia Sichen put down his bowl, "What is it?"
Xia Wanqing calmly said, "Wenjin said the blind man at the foot of the village was silenced by someone. He wouldn’t make things up just to distract me, so it must be true! I need you to look into this, and while you’re at it, check out someone!"
"Who?"
Xia Wanqing hesitated for a moment before saying, "Huangfu Yuxuan!"
Xia Sichen’s eyes flickered. Was the sun rising from all directions at once? His dad always trusted Huangfu Yuxuan, yet now he wanted to investigate him?
He feigned confusion and said, "What do you want to investigate about him?"
Xia Wanqing picked up his bowl, took a large gulp as if drinking water, and sighed a long breath, as if releasing all the pent-up frustration in his heart. He said, "Wenjin kept saying your second and third uncles were imprisoned because of Huangfu Yuxuan’s trickery. Although I didn’t fully believe it, investigating will put my mind at ease!"
Xia Sichen looked at Xia Wanqing unexpectedly. He knew how much his dad trusted Huangfu Yuxuan, so even though Wenjin had said it more than once, his dad always thought it was just an excuse to break off the engagement. But now, had he suddenly changed his mind?
It didn’t seem real!
Xia Sichen wore a curious expression, "Dad, haven’t you always trusted him? What made you change your mind?"
Xia Wanqing didn’t notice the teasing look in his son’s eyes and furrowed his brows. "You brat, what are you talking about? Affection has its limits. Even if I trust others, how could I not trust Jin’er? I believe in others because of Jin’er. Do you think your dad is muddleheaded?"
Xia Sichen chuckled, "No, no, not muddleheaded at all. After all, Dad, you’re not old yet!"
Xia Wanqing glared, "Don’t think I can’t tell you’re calling me muddleheaded!"
Xia Sichen widened his eyes in surprise, "Wow, Dad, you’re sharp! I take back what I said about you earlier. Let me penalize myself with a drink!"
Seeing his son’s antics, Xia Wanqing’s anger turned to laughter, and he continued, "I remember sending people to investigate Huangfu Yuxuan’s background before. At first, they reported he was just the son of a wealthy merchant. If I hadn’t sent people again, I might still be in the dark today! If there was a second time, there might be a third. You brat, tell me, will you handle this?"
Xia Sichen replied, "I’ll handle it!" His eyes flickered with cunning, "Dad, I’m willing to do it, but could you first tell me, if it turns out that my second and third uncles were indeed set up by Huangfu Yuxuan, what will you do?"
Xia Wanqing’s face darkened, and a heavy pressure filled the room. He coldly said, "Haotian Village may be a Jianghu force, but we won’t tolerate being pushed around!"
Xia Sichen glanced at his dad again, still finding it somewhat unreal, "Dad, are you serious? Your attitude has changed quite a bit!"
Xia Wanqing drank the bowl of wine in one gulp, slammed the bowl on the table, and sighed heavily, "You brat, can’t you see? Wenjin’s become distant from me. How many days does she come back to this house? If not for her uncles getting out tomorrow, would she have come back today? I’m not muddleheaded. Can I really ignore her wishes? If I insist for a few more days, she might not come back even once a month."
His expression was somewhat desolate.
Xia Sichen remained silent. Though Wenjin was filial, she was also stubborn, so this matter surely troubled her.
Facing her father, she would be forced into marriage by him.
Of course, she’d avoid coming back to avoid clashing with him.
He always thought his dad was straightforward and focused more on loyalty, unaware of these subtleties. It turned out his dad was rough yet attentive.
After thinking for a moment, Xia Sichen said, "Dad, you shouldn’t send me to do this. You know I don’t like Huangfu Yuxuan. He’s too fake for my liking! Dad, I’m being honest. If I investigate, I’d make him seem utterly guilty! But I don’t want to deceive you!"
"Who?" Xia Wanqing felt in the Capital City, some things were restrictive, unlike the freedom and ease in Haotian Village. There, everything worked smoothly, and now he had no one to trust. If he acted personally, it might cause suspicions. So he thought of using this brat, but surprisingly, the brat refused.
Xia Sichen said, "Right now, there’s an ideal person to handle this matter and set your mind at ease!"
Xia Wanqing looked at him.
Xia Sichen touched his nose and said, "Dad, your vigilance in the Capital has been quite lacking, causing Wenjin and me to worry. Wenjin secretly contacted the village two weeks ago and arranged for Uncle Bai to come over!"
Hearing Xia Sichen mention Bai Feichen, Xia Wanqing smiled.
In the village, the smartest brain belonged to Bai Feichen.
Regarding Wenjin’s marriage, Bai Feichen always maintained a neutral attitude, neither supporting nor opposing it.
When he and Hua the Second, and Gu the Third went down the mountain, Bai Feichen went to handle matters in Jianghu. When he later came to the Capital, he stayed at a place arranged by Huangfu Yuxuan, which was inconvenient for contacting village brothers.
But Wenjin’s foresight indeed saved him some trouble.
However, he vaguely felt something was off. He squinted at his son, "Do you two think your Uncle Bai is smarter, and so you let him come early, thinking your dad is not as sharp?"
