Chapter 6: Night Howl
The howl came again. Closer.
Rex burst from his hut, club raised. The village was dark, the central fire had burned down to embers. Figures emerged from other huts, clutching spears and axes.
"What was that?" Mira’s voice, high and scared.
"Everyone stay back," Nara commanded. She already had her obsidian knife in hand. Screech was hissing on her shoulder, feathers puffed to twice his size.
Rhea pushed through the crowd, double-bladed axe gleaming in the starlight. "Eastern forest. It crossed the river."
[ALERT: HOSTILE APPROACHING]
[CREATURE: UNKNOWN | THREAT: VERY HIGH]
[DISTANCE: 200 METERS AND CLOSING]
Rex’s mana was at 0. No blueprints. No backup. Just a club and twenty terrified villagers.
"How many?" he asked Rhea.
"One. Big." She sniffed the air. "Smells like wet fur and rot."
The palisade gate flapped open. No guard. Of course no guard...they didn’t have enough people for night watches.
"Close the gate," Rex ordered. "Everyone with a weapon form a semicircle behind it. If it breaks through, we need to hit it all at once."
Tor and Fen rushed to pull the hide flaps together. Marta tied them with vine. The other villagers that counted up to maybe twelve with real weapons, formed up behind Rex.
"You’re giving orders now?" Rhea muttered.
"Someone has to."
The howl became a snarl. Then a crash... wood splintering. One of the palisade logs near the gate exploded inward.
A head pushed through the gap.
It was the size of a bear, but longer, lower to the ground. Dark fur matted with mud. Eyes glowing red. Jaws lined with teeth that curved like fishhooks. Its shoulders scraped against the broken palisade as it forced its way through.
[CREATURE IDENTIFIED: DIRE WOLF]
[LEVEL: 15 | HP: 250/250]
[WEAKNESS: FIRE, EYES]
"Dire wolf," Rex breathed. "Of course. Jurassic Park meets Game of Thrones."
The beast shook off the splintered wood and growled. The sound vibrated in Rex’s chest.
No one moved.
Then Rhea charged.
She screamed a raw, hunting cry and swung her double-bladed axe at the wolf’s snout. The blade bit into flesh. The wolf yelped and recoiled, but only for a second. Its tail lashed out, catching Rhea across the ribs. She flew backward, landing hard in the dirt.
"Rhea!" Mira ran toward her. The wolf turned toward the girl.
Rex moved without thinking.
He sprinted between Mira and the wolf, club raised. "Hey! Ugly! Over here!"
The wolf’s red eyes locked onto him. It lunged.
Rex dropped to the ground, sliding between its forelegs. He swung his club upward into its throat. Crack! The club connected. The wolf gagged, stumbled.
[DIRE WOLF: 250 → 220 HP]
[CRITICAL BLOW! +10% DAMAGE]
But the beast didn’t fall. It spun, jaws snapping at Rex’s head. He rolled left, felt teeth graze his shoulder. Warm blood.
[HP: 43 → 38]
"Torch!" Nara shouted. "Someone get a torch!"
Tor ran to the central fire, grabbed a burning branch, and hurled it at the wolf. The branch bounced off its flank, setting a patch of fur alight. The wolf howled in pain and shook itself. The fire died.
But it distracted the beast long enough.
Rhea was on her feet again. She circled behind the wolf, axe raised. "Now, demon!"
Rex stood, club ready. He feinted left. The wolf bit at empty air. Rhea brought her axe down on its spine.
CRUNCH.
The wolf collapsed, hind legs paralyzed. It dragged itself forward, jaws still snapping, but it was done. Tor and Fen rushed in with spears, stabbing at its neck. Nara slit its throat.
Blood pooled in the dirt.
The wolf stopped moving.
[DEFEATED: DIRE WOLF (LEVEL 15)]
[+800 XP]
[LEVEL 2: 210/200 → LEVEL 3!]
[+5 STAT POINTS AVAILABLE]
[LOOT: DIRE WOLF HIDE (EPIC), DIRE WOLF FANGS (4), DIRE WOLF BLOOD (ALCHEMY ITEM)]
Rex leaned on his club, panting. His shoulder burned. His ribs screamed. But he was alive.
Rhea walked over to him. Her lip was split. Blood dripped down her chin. She looked at the dead wolf, then at Rex.
"You didn’t run."
"Not my style."
She stared at him for a long moment. Then, without a word, she walked to the wolf, grabbed its hind leg, and started dragging it toward the fire pit.
[REPUTATION CHANGE: RHEA -10 → +5]
[Rhea’s disposition: Curious. Impressed. Confused.]
Nara appeared at Rex’s side. "You’re bleeding."
"I noticed."
"Sit. I’ll stitch it."
She pushed him down onto a log by the central fire. The villagers gathered around, staring at the wolf carcass. Murmurs. Then, slowly, someone clapped. Then another. Soon, a dozen people were applauding.
[FACTION REPUTATION: RIVER FOLK +15]
[Current reputation: 20 (Friendly)]
Nara pulled a bone needle and sinew thread from a pouch. "This will hurt."
"I’ve had worse piercings."
She worked quickly, stitching the gash on his shoulder. Rex gritted his teeth but didn’t scream. When she finished, she pressed a poultice of mashed leaves against the wound and wrapped it in clean hide.
[HP REGEN +2 PER HOUR FOR 12 HOURS]
Rhea returned from dragging the wolf. She dropped the carcass by the fire and looked at Rex’s bandaged shoulder.
"You’re not useless," she said.
"High praise."
"Don’t let it go to your head." She sat down across from him, pulling her knife to begin skinning the wolf. "Tomorrow, we hunt the rest of its pack."
"There’s more?"
"Dire wolves don’t hunt alone. This one was old. Kicked out of the pack. The real alpha is still out there."
[QUEST UPDATE: DIRE WOLF PACK THREAT]
[OBJECTIVE: LOCATE AND ELIMINATE THE ALPHA WOLF]
[TIME LIMIT: 5 DAYS (BEFORE PACK ATTACKS VILLAGE)]
[REWARD: 1500 XP, DIRE WOLF ALPHA HIDE (LEGENDARY)]
Rex groaned. "Can’t I just build a wall first?"
"You can do both," Nara said. "That’s why you have seven days."
She handed him a piece of cooked wolf meat. He bit into it. Tough. Gamey. But warm.
[+20 HP]
The villagers slowly returned to their huts. The fire crackled. Screech curled up on Nara’s lap and closed his eyes.
Rhea finished skinning the wolf and rolled the hide into a bundle. "You sleep in my hut tonight."
Rex blinked. "Excuse me?"
"The palisade has a hole. Your hut is too close to the forest. If another wolf comes, you’ll die before anyone reaches you." She stood, slinging the hide over her shoulder. "My hut is in the center. You’ll be safer there."
Nara smirked. "She doesn’t offer that to just anyone."
"Shut up, shaman."
Rex looked at Rhea’s face. The scar. The hard eyes. The way her jaw was set... not inviting, but not hostile either. Practical.
"Fine," he said. "But I snore."
"Like a dying mammoth," Nara added.
Rhea turned and walked toward her hut. "Bring your own furs."
Rex grabbed his club and followed.
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 3 → 4]
[You have proven yourself in combat. The blood approves.]
[Note: Sleeping near a strong female may accelerate draconic awakening.]
The system is shipping me with the cavewoman, Rex thought. Great.
He ducked into Rhea’s hut. It was larger than his, with actual furniture... a wooden frame bed covered in mammoth fur, a weapons rack, and a small shrine with carved bones.
Rhea pointed to a spot on the floor. "There."
"No bed?"
"You haven’t earned the bed."
He lay down on the furs she tossed him. The floor was hard but warm. Rhea climbed onto her bed and lay facing the wall.
Silence.
Then, quietly: "You fought well tonight."
"You too."
"Don’t let it happen again. I’m the warrior. You’re the builder."
Rex smiled in the dark. "Yes, ma’am."
She didn’t respond. But he heard her breathing slow into sleep.
The system panel flickered one last time.
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 4 → 5]
[Awakening: Stage 1 approaching.]
[You have slept in proximity to a worthy rival. Growth accelerated.]
Rex closed his eyes.
Outside, the eastern forest howled again... farther this time. The sound of the alpha Dire wolf echoed out there, as if it knew where they lived.
