Chapter 20: The Stone King’s Shadow
Three days had passed since the Mouths’ attack.
The village had healed. The wounded were mending. The barricades had been reinforced. But the tension remained—a low hum beneath the surface of daily life, like a string pulled too tight.
Rex stood at the forge, shaping a new batch of crystal arrowheads. The work was meditative, a rhythm he had come to rely on. Each strike of the hammer, each spark of metal against stone, pushed the fear a little further away.
Rhea found him there, her ancient sword at her hip. "The Lizardkin scouts are back."
"Report?"
"They found the Mouths’ camp. Abandoned. They’re gone."
Rex set down his hammer. "Gone where?"
"South. Toward the mountains." She paused. "The scouts also found something else. Tracks. Big ones. Heading this way."
He felt a cold knot form in his stomach. "How big?"
"Bigger than a mammoth. Deeper than a wolf."
Rex wiped his hands on his leather apron. "Show me."
The tracks were unmistakable. Heavy, wide, with deep impressions that suggested immense weight. The stride was long—whatever made them was moving fast.
[DRAGON EYES LV.1: ACTIVE]
[TRACKING ANALYSIS...]
[CREATURE: UNKNOWN (LARGE)]
[THREAT: UNCERTAIN]
[RANGE: APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES]
"Whatever it is, it’ll be here by nightfall," Rex said.
Rhea’s hand went to her sword. "We fight?"
"Not yet. We watch." He turned to the scouts. "Send word to the Lizardkin. Tell them to prepare for a large visitor."
The day passed slowly. Rex kept his dragon eyes fixed on the northern approach, scanning for any sign of movement. The villagers went about their work, but the tension was palpable.
By evening, the visitor arrived.
It emerged from the forest like a mountain walking. Tall—easily fifteen feet—with skin like granite and eyes that burned like coals. Its shoulders were broad, its arms thick as tree trunks. In one hand, it carried a massive stone club.
Ash Giant.
[ASH GIANT DETECTED]
[LEVEL: 35]
[THREAT: EXTREME]
Rex climbed the watchtower, his hand on his sword. The Ash Giant stopped at the edge of the village, its burning eyes scanning the settlement.
"DRAGON-BOUND," it rumbled. "I COME TO SPEAK."
Rex descended from the tower. Rhea followed, her sword drawn. Nara appeared beside them, her hands already glowing with protective magic.
"Stay back," Rex said. "I’ll handle this."
He walked toward the Ash Giant, his heart hammering. Up close, the creature was even more massive. Its skin was cracked and weathered, like ancient rock. Its voice was deep enough to shake the ground.
"You know who I am," Rex said.
"THE DRAGON-BOUND. THE FIRE-BRINGER. THE ONE WHO WILL CHALLENGE VALTHORION." The Ash Giant lowered its head. "I AM KING BOULDER-HEART. I HAVE COME TO OFFER MY PEOPLE’S AID."
Rex blinked. "Aid?"
"THE ASH GIANTS HAVE NO LOVE FOR THE DRAGON. HE BURNS OUR MOUNTAINS. HE SLAYS OUR HERDS. HE TAKES OUR YOUNG." Boulder-Heart’s eyes flared. "WE WILL HELP YOU. BUT WE REQUIRE SOMETHING IN RETURN."
"What?"
"THE CRYSTAL SPIDERS. THEY HAVE INFESTED OUR ANCESTRAL CAVES. WE CANNOT ENTER TO HONOR OUR DEAD." The Ash Giant’s voice dropped lower. "CLEAR THE CAVES. AND THE ASH GIANTS WILL STAND WITH YOU AGAINST VALTHORION."
[QUEST TRIGGERED: THE ASH GIANT’S BURDEN]
[OBJECTIVE: CLEAR THE CRYSTAL SPIDER INFESTATION FROM THE ASH GIANT CAVES]
[TIME LIMIT: 7 DAYS]
[REWARD: ASH GIANT ALLIANCE, 1000 XP, UNIQUE BLUEPRINT]
Rex looked at Rhea. She nodded.
"We’ll do it," Rex said. "We’ll clear your caves."
Boulder-Heart rumbled with something that might have been approval. "THEN WE HAVE AN AGREEMENT. I WILL SEND WARRIORS TO AID YOUR VILLAGE. YOU WILL SEND FIRE TO CLEANSE OUR MOUNTAINS."
"It’s a deal."
The Ash Giant turned and walked back into the forest. The ground shook with each step.
Rex let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding.
"That was terrifying," he admitted.
"You handled it well," Rhea said.
"Thanks. I was improvising."
They walked back to the village. The news spread quickly—the Ash Giants were offering an alliance. But it came with a price.
That evening, Rex gathered his inner circle.
"The Ash Giants want us to clear a cave system," he said. "Crystal spiders. Lots of them."
Tor frowned. "How many?"
"The king didn’t say. But it’s their ancestral caves. If they can’t enter, the infestation is bad."
Nara spoke: "The caves are in the mountains—two days’ travel. The spiders will be larger than the ones we’ve faced before. And they’ll be defending their territory."
"We need the Ash Giants," Rex said. "If we’re going to fight Valthorion, we need every ally we can get."
Rhea stepped forward. "I’ll come."
"Me too," Tor said. "And Fen."
"And me," Mira added, her voice small but firm.
Rex looked at them—his people. His tribe. His family.
"Then we leave at dawn," he said.
The night was quiet. Rex sat by the river, staring at the stars. Rhea joined him.
"You’re worried," she said.
"Always."
"What’s different this time?"
He was quiet for a moment. "The Ash Giants are powerful. But they’re also desperate. Desperate allies are unpredictable."
"You don’t trust them?"
"I trust their need. I don’t trust their patience." He looked at her. "If we fail, they might turn on us."
"Then we don’t fail."
He smiled. "That simple?"
"That simple." She took his hand. "We’ve faced wolves. We’ve faced Mouths. We’ve faced crystal spiders. We can face a few more."
"Few. Right."
She kissed him. "Stop worrying. It’s not good for your health."
"Too late for that."
They sat in comfortable silence, watching the stars.
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 48 → 49]
I’m going to have a serious talk with you, system.
But the panel didn’t answer. It never did when he was angry.
Dawn came too quickly.
The expedition assembled at the village gate: Rex, Rhea, Tor, Fen, Mira, and Nara. The Lizardkin provided two scouts to guide them. The goblins offered a small escort to the mountain’s edge.
Boulder-Heart awaited them at the mountain’s base. The Ash Giant king was even more imposing in the daylight, his granite skin gleaming with minerals.
"THE CAVES ARE AHEAD," he rumbled. "DEEP. DARK. FILLED WITH SPIDERS." He paused. "BRING YOUR FIRE. YOU WILL NEED IT."
Rex nodded. "We’ll bring it."
The cave entrance was massive—a gaping maw in the mountainside, large enough for the Ash Giant to enter. But Boulder-Heart stopped at the threshold.
"I CANNOT ENTER," he said. "THE SPIDERS’ WEB IS TOXIC TO MY KIND." He looked at Rex. "THIS IS YOUR TASK."
Rex stepped into the darkness. The others followed.
[DRAGON EYES LV.1: ACTIVE]
[NIGHT VISION ENGAGED]
The cave opened into a vast chamber. The walls were covered in crystalline webs, glittering like frozen rain. The air was cold, sharp, and smelled of venom.
"They’re here," Nara whispered. "I can feel them."
Rex activated [FIRE BREATH].
[FIRE BREATH ACTIVATED: 10 MANA]
[MANA: 100 → 90]
The flames illuminated the chamber. And the spiders came.
They emerged from the shadows—dozens of them, their bodies gleaming with sharp crystals. They moved with unnatural speed, their legs clicking against the stone.
"Formation!" Rex shouted. "Tor, Fen—hold the left flank. Rhea, take the right. Mira, watch our backs. Nara, support."
The battle erupted.
Rex unleashed his fire breath, burning through the nearest spiders. They screeched and recoiled, but more came. Rhea’s sword blazed with fire aspect, cutting through their bodies. Tor and Fen held the line with their copper axes.
Nara began her ritual. The air shimmered, and a protective wind surrounded them, deflecting the spiders’ attacks.
Mira was a whirlwind, her crystal spear finding its mark again and again.
Rex pushed forward, his fire breath clearing a path. The spiders’ numbers were thinning. But more kept coming.
"We need to find the queen!" Rhea shouted. "Kill it, and the rest will scatter!"
Rex’s dragon eyes scanned the chamber. [DRAGON EYES LV.1: ACTIVE] [SCANNING...]
He found it—a massive figure at the far end of the chamber. Twice the size of the queen they’d faced before, its body covered in jagged crystals.
[CRYSTAL SPIDER QUEEN (MOUNTAIN VARIANT)]
[LEVEL: 28]
[HP: 500/500]
[THREAT: EXTREME]
[WEAKNESS: FIRE, EYES, ABDOMEN]
"There!" Rex pointed. "That’s the queen!"
They fought their way through the swarm. Rex’s fire breath was running low, but he kept pushing. Rhea cut a path beside him. Tor and Fen fought with the desperation of men who knew they had no other option.
Mira, from her vantage point, launched a crystal-tipped spear at the queen.
The spear struck true. The queen screeched and stumbled.
[MOUNTAIN QUEEN: 500 → 450 HP]
Rex saw his opening. He charged forward, his copper sword blazing with fire aspect, and drove the blade into the queen’s abdomen.
[MOUNTAIN QUEEN: 450 → 380 HP]
The queen lashed out. Rex was thrown back, his ribs screaming.
[HP: 120 → 95]
But Rhea was there. She leaped onto the queen’s back and drove her ancient sword into its eye.
[MOUNTAIN QUEEN: 380 → 250 HP]
The queen roared—a deafening sound that shook the cave. But it was weakening.
Tor and Fen joined the attack. Nara focused her magic on a single point, striking the queen’s abdomen with concentrated force.
[MOUNTAIN QUEEN: 250 → 150 HP]
Rex scrambled to his feet and unleashed his remaining fire breath.
[FIRE BREATH ACTIVATED: 10 MANA]
[MANA: 80 → 70]
The flames engulfed the queen. It screamed, thrashed, and finally collapsed.

The remaining spiders scattered.
Rex collapsed against the cave wall, breathing hard. He was alive. They were all alive.
Rhea appeared beside him, her face smeared with spider venom. "You okay?"
"I will be." He looked at her. "That was insane."
"You loved every minute."
He laughed. "Maybe. Just a little."
They returned to the village as heroes. The Ash Giants were overjoyed—the caves were cleansed, their ancestors’ honor restored. Boulder-Heart pledged his people’s allegiance to Rex.
[ASH GIANT REPUTATION: 0 → 50 (Allied)]

That night, Rex stood on the watchtower, looking out over the valley. Rhea joined him.
"You did it," she said.
"We did it."
"Stop deflecting."
He smiled. "It’s my specialty."
She leaned against him. "We’re building something real, aren’t we?"
"Yeah. We are."
She looked up at him. "Where do we go from here?"
He thought about it. The Mouths would return. Valthorion was still out there. There were other tribes to find, other alliances to forge.
But for tonight, he had Rhea, and the village was safe.
"One day at a time," he said. "We survive today. Tomorrow, we make it through the next."
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 49 → 50]
[STAGE 2 (DRAGON-BLOODED) NOW AVAILABLE]
[WOULD YOU LIKE TO PROCEED? Y/N]
Rex ignored it.
He held Rhea close and watched the stars.
