Chapter 41: The cause of her miseries
Daisy turned around to face the man. After a few moments of silence, she crossed her arms in front of her chest, ’’I don’t know what gave you the impression that I am in desperate need for your employment opportunity but trust me, I am not,’’ As soon as she finished speaking, she left the place without letting the man respond to her words.
Once she was back into the ballroom, she glanced behind herself and sighed in relief noticing that the man had not followed.
Even if he saw through her disguise, they had no connections. This was probably their first and last meeting hence her secret was safe.
No one would know that she was not a man, but a woman.
’’Dexter?"
Daisy halted in her tracks when she heard a feminine voice calling out her alibi’s name. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
’’Dexter, I know it’s you. What are you avoiding me for?" The woman raised her voice, gaining the attention of a few people who were mingling around them.
The woman assumed that Daisy was avoiding her and Daisy won’t refute the claims if she had to be honest. She was Daisy Chen and Dexter was just an alibi, that also stood for her identity as a hacker. But for the people in the business world to address her as ’Dexter’, there was only one explanation. Those people were directly or inversely connected to Ryle.
And Daisy had worked for Ryle for long enough to recognize the patterns of the people approaching her. The middle aged or young men approached her to find a chance to bootlick Ryle or form connection with him. The old men approached her to know about his schedules, his private lives, and mostly to form connections for their sons or find marriage opportunities for their unmarried daughters.
However, when women approached her, the answer was much less complex. They were once involved with Ryle Harper or they are trying to get involved with him. Daisy did not know which category the current woman fell into.
’’I am talking to you... Can’t you hear me?!"
Daisy turned around to look at the woman who was approaching her while sipping wine from her glass and immediately, the gears in her head started turning when she saw the slightly familiar appearance.
Who was this woman?
’’Yes?" Daisy asked, ’’Is there something I can help you with?"
Daisy crossed her arms in front of her chest, trying to warm her body that was gradually turning cold. All she wanted was to get out of this godforsaken place and go back home to her little bundle of peace. She had never wanted something more than it as she did in that particular moment.
’’Now, don’t act like you don’t know me. Call your boss,’’ the woman raised her chin haughtily.
Daisy spoke calmly, ’’Apologies, but my boss is not available for taking calls now. He has left for some work. If you want, you can try contacting him later—"
Her words were yet to leave her mouth when the woman splashed the glass of wine on her face.
The cold wine dripped down her face to her neck, seeping in and drenching her shirt.
’’How dare you talk back?’’ The woman lowered her gaze, lifting her chin, ’’Do you know who I am? When I say contact your boss, I need you to do it right this instant.’’
Daisy squared her shoulders, refrained the shudders that were slithering through her body, ’’I apologize for the inconvenience caused but my boss doesn’t appreciate calls that are uncalled for regardless of who I am doing it for.’’
’Pak’
The sound of a crisp slap resounded in the ballroom. Daisy staggered a few steps back by the impact of the slap on her face. She grabbed a pillar to stabilize her body.
People gathered around them, whispering and murmuring amongst themselves.
Some of them recognized Daisy and knew who she worked for while some of them were interested in the drama.
Daisy tried to remain conscious but the ache in her lower abdomen had intensified. Her vision was slowly fading.
The woman approached Daisy again, ’’Are you going to call him now or do you want me to continue?" she grabbed Daisy’s collar.
’’Heh~" a deep chuckle reverberated in the ballroom. The music that was floating in the air stopped just in time. ’’The audacity to touch my people,’’ Accompanied by the sound of steady footsteps, the man’s mocking words had everyone turning to look in his direction.
"Isn’t it Mr. Harper?"
’’Who? Which Mr. Harper?"
’’You don’t know the CEO of Harper Societies?"
’’Oh? The CEO of the multinational Security Corporation?"
Some people whispered amongst themselves but a few men quietly observed the fiasco without saying a word to each other because for one, they knew who the man was and what he was capable of. And for the other, they had no intentions to cross him.
Through her hazy vision, Daisy glanced at the man who was walking towards her.
Ryle Harper.
The cause of all of her miseries. Or at least of most of them.
And it was no doubt as she looked at his devilishly handsome face. Every line of his feature seemed to have been carved to perfection. And as he strode towards her, a touch of a sly smile remained fixated on her face.
Devil.
He looked like one. Acted like one. And he was one.
She expected him to come straight at her and get started with his taunts. The look on his face told her that he was ready to humiliate her at that very moment. And she would have been more than ready to take him head on if it was some other day.
But Daisy knew that today was not her day. She could barely stand, let alone bother with Ryle.
She opened her mouth to explain when he stopped in front of her. However, before a single word could escape her mouth, a scream erupted in the ballroom.
