Chapter 291: Nathan Kingsley
Just as Daisy was about to enter the car, Maxim grabbed her hand to hold her in place. As she turned to look at him, he passed her a card, ’’Reach out to Logan in case something goes wrong. I have given him a heads up so all should be fine. Get that idiot out of that place and leave.’’
Daisy glanced at the card in her hand, momentarily in trance, ’’You...’’ For a moment, a warm feeling spread in her chest, ’’I thought you never took Ryle for your best friend?"
’’He is dating you now. If something were to happen to him, then you would be sad.’’
Daisy arched her brow, ’’Given how much I oppose your marriage to my sister, shouldn’t you pray that something happens to me?"
’’You are my soon to be sister-in-law, Daisy. If you were to die, Diana would cry. Naturally, I have to look out for you people when I can,’’ Maxim said it with a straight face as if all good and evil in the world could easily sum up what Diana thought about it and he too, would look at it that way.
And had Daisy not seen the concern in those eyes as he looked at her and the animosity in the glares that he shot at Lu Xian, she really would have thought that this man could not be bothered with Ryle or her.
’’Thank you,’’ she was not good with words so she did not linger on what she was to say.
...
Kingsley Mansion.
When Ryle and Benjamin walked past the doors, the old butler did not flinch a muscle on his face but just quietly remained in a half bowing position.
To Benjamin’s eyes, the butler seemed like he was hanging on his last breath. The man’s eyes were droopy and his flesh was all squishy and saggy. He seemed to be in his 70s but the posture of his bow that appeared as if it could break his old bones did not fluctuate one bit. freēwebnovel.com
But Benjamin broke out in a cold sweat looking at the man’s stature. Had he not been afraid of overstepping his boundaries, he would have stepped forward to help the man up. However, Ryle paid him no attention so Benjamin could only turn a blind eye.
The mansion looked rather dark, a striking contrast to Chen Mansion’s shining opulence. The European styled Kingsley mansion was also extravagant to the very core but there was something eerie about the place that seemed like it had not seen sunlight in ages.
Benjamin stole a glimpse of Ryle who strode inside, his hands tucked in pockets. There was his usual unrestrained air around him but somehow the man’s back seemed rather intimidating. Gone was the casual, laid back nature that Ryle had been showing in the recent months.
Benjamin felt like he had been teleported back to the day he had first met the young man who had looked him dead in the eye and questioned, ’Can you drive well?’ To that a Benjamin who was in dire need of a job had nodded confidently, only to be met with the man’s consequent question, ’Can you kill while driving well?’
There was something so bone chilling about that Ryle Harper, the one which seemed to have disappeared and faded over the course of time. As he met Maxim, as he got himself pet parrots, as he found an amusing secretary, Dexter and got himself involved with Daisy and Angel, he seemed to have to have changed a bit.
But only at this moment did Benjamin realize that the bloodthirsty wolf who would not flinch twice in killing its own kind upon treachery was still there. Just lying low. Tamed by its favored ones. But it still existed. Just one wrong poke and it would brandish its claws again.
The sound of faint footsteps made Benjamin halt in his track even as Ryle continued striding inside the mansion. Soon, a man came to Benjamin’s views from the top of the stairs and a deep set of eyes locked onto Benjamin, making him shiver inside even as he maintained an unaffected demeanor on the outside.
Nathan Kingsley. A figure immensely feared in the underworld.
’’I told you not to bring your dogs in. You still did. Do you take my words for a joke?"
Ryle did not look at the man but instead examined the mansion, ’’It looks still as dull.’’
Benjamin broke out in a bout of cold sweat but he did not even dare to move an inch. This Boss of his... was simply too...
Benjamin gulped and cried. It was worth dying in a dragon’s glory rather than living as a coward. With that pump up, he stood a little bit more confidently and kept his straight face intact.
Nathan Kingsley had a striking set of jaws, deep set of eyes and cheekbones so sharp that they made him look scary, his cheeks almost sunken. The man was tall and lean but his stature, when placed next to Ryle’s broad and muscular one seemed rather average, which probably was noticed by him too.
He scanned the man from head to toe, a hint of appreciation appeared in his eyes before being replaced to its initial aloofness as he spoke, ’’You have arrived here long ago. I asked you to get over here to meet your grandfather while he was still alive but you remained absent. You remained absent from his funeral. What are you trying to establish here?"
’’I was busy,’’ Ryle calmly walked towards a flower vase and observed it under the dim lights, ’’A fine one.’’
Benjamin gulped. Truth to be told, the man was not busy at all. They had been on their way to Kingsley mansion half a day ago. Upon hearing the news of his grandfather’s death, Ryle initially asked him to slow down and elongate the duration of the journey but then midway, he changed his mind, which is how they were delayed by one night before they arrived here. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
While he was lost in his thoughts, Benjamin suddenly felt a cold metal brushing on his neck and his entire body stiffened.
