Chapter 264: We prepared dinner

The words ’Blood Transfusion’ on it were rather glaring.

Her attention stayed there for a very brief moment before she walked away with a nonchalant face, however a myriad of fleeting thoughts ran in her head. She had a very bizarre feeling in her heart but before she could put her finger on it, it disappeared. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

As the door opened and closed, Caleb straightened up in his chair, letting out a soft sigh.

He glanced at the closed door and a hint of amusement flickered on his face as he shook his head, ’’Kids these days... are quite the lovers."

He leaned back and closed his eyes, the upturned arch of his lips dying down as a fleeting sadness flickered by his face.

On the way back to Chen Mansion, Daisy sat in the backseat of the car, her brows furrowed as she looked out of the car, at the passing landscapes, lost in her thoughts.

’’President, is something bothering you?" Secretary Han asked after a period of silence. Daisy had let her driver leave in the evening due to a family emergency hence he was the one replacing the man tonight.

’’Hmm?" Daisy snapped out of her reverie and turned to look at the man.

’’You have been rather absent-minded after your brief meeting with Mr. Astor. You can share your worries with me, President. Maybe I can relieve your burdens.’’

’’It is nothing,’’ Daisy tilted her face to the side. After a while she sighed, ’’There are things that I cannot put my finger on and that has started bothering me now.’’

’’What is it about?"

’’Secretary Han, when you have people you cherish, you would want to protect them. And, do you know what you must do in order to be able to do so?"

Secretary Han paused as her voice turned further serene as she talked, the frown between her brows lightening, ’’Please enlighten me.’’

’’You must take control...’’ Daisy cupped her chin and narrowed her eyes, ’’...of any wind that can do them harm or any fire that can graze their skin. You must control every external threat that can ever cross them the wrong way.’’

Secretary Han remained silent. There was an edge to Daisy’s voice that he was familiar with, but not because of her. Instead, her current stance reminded him of his previous boss, Daisy’s father.

’When raising a bird with golden wings, one must get a beautiful cage that entices her. They would be too fascinated with the world outside, not knowing that their wings will be clipped the moment they fly. To protect something, you must learn to control the entire game. The threats outside and the rebellion inside,’ Helian Chen had once said.

Secretary Han had been young at that time and a part of him had shook at the depth behind these words that were purely brutish. Possessive. Unhinged. And containing nothing but absolute determination.

Secretary Han shook his head inwardly. He did not know if he had matured enough to feel the difference in their tones or he had gotten used to how unhinged the father was that he was not fazed by the daughter’s words anymore.

But nevertheless, it made him slightly uneasy, ’’President, what are your orders?"

’’Keep an eye on him.’’

’’You want me to track Mr. Astor?"

’’Yes. And his medical records.’’

’’Medical records?" Secretary Han asked in confusion.

’’He went to hospital today. I want the reason behind it.’’

’’Yes, President. I will be on it,’’ The more Secretary Han thought, the further he was puzzled but his face remained unchanged. The years of training had him answer her unhesitantly.

Daisy nodded just as their car drove past the mansion gates.

The man left and Daisy entered the mansion, being greeted by the servants who had yet to retire to their quarters and the guards who were stationed at every nook and cranny of Chen Mansion.

She found it rather... adorable that Ryle knew she could take down countless men just by herself yet he had had this amount of people guarding the mansion.

’You are not always at home.’ He had told her when she had confronted him about it. And while Daisy had agreed to it, she also mentioned that with such a grand fiasco happening, people will assume they were hiding something precious.

’What do you mean? We have Angel here,’ he replied with the stance of a mother hen protecting its chick.

And Daisy had no more retorts left with her.

’’Daisy, you are back.’’

A gust of air blew by and Daisy’s arm was swept and hooked around a delicate arm.

’’We were waiting for you,’’ Ivy said.

’’For dinner?" Daisy mused at the girl’s antics. Outside, Ivy would pretend like she did not know her just in case people thought she was a nepotism product. Once they entered the mansion, she would go back to her usual self.

’’Yes, we prepared the dinner for you.’’

’’We?"

’’I made the starters. Ryle made the main course. And baby Angel prepared the dessert.’’

Daisy’s lips tugged up slightly at the way Ivy addressed Ryle. Initially, Ivy had seemed rather wary of Ryle and that had left Daisy in a bit of a dilemma as to how to make them warm up to each other, since they were living under the same roof now.

She had long seen Ivy as family and she did not want such small obstacles to leave any discomfort for the girl.

But now it seemed like her worries were for naught. Ivy and Ryle bonded over bizarre things even though Ryle still dissed her every once in a while in passing.

For example, roasting Caleb. After going through the paintings in his place, both these people seemed to have found a spark for nitpicking on his personal life choices of turning down such a skillful artist who was so passionate about him.

And now, there was cooking.

’’Wait... Did you say Angel prepared the dessert?"

Daisy’s feet picked up the pace in the direction of the kitchen as Ivy nodded with her widening in confusion.
