Chapter 180: Photo frame
After the recent encounter with Lu Xian, Chen Lina did not have any faith to spare on strangers. She did not want to trust anyone. She was inclined to believe that Daisy was just rejoicing her victory by sending her people and making her feel more miserable.
’’Consequently, your lover also turned away from you. Oh, you chased him away.’’
’’Who. Are. You?"
’’Does it matter again? What if I tell you? What if I don’t? You knew who Lu Xian was but what changed in the end?"
Chen Lina’s shoulder slumped. Yes, she had put her faith in Lu Xian’s credibility, his power, his history with the Chens and his entire identity but still, her entire world came crashing down just because that man also had his eyes on that slut. All his dealings with her had been purely with the intention of pleasing her only.
A sonorous chuckle reverberated in the place, interrupting her trail of thoughts.
’’This is not the end, Chen Lina.’’
’’What do you mean?" Chen Lina’s fingers clenched into tight fists as she asked in a shaky voice.
’’Based on what should this company belong to Daisy and not you? Just based on the little bit of extra talent that Daisy’s grandfather had compared to your father?’’
Chen Lina closed her eyes.
’’I will help you. Ambitions are meant to be conquered, Chen Lina, with sweat or with blood, it doesn’t matter. With your blood or others’ blood, it doesn’t matter as well...’’ As she spoke, the woman burst into another peal of laughter, but this time, it did not sound as soft and sweet to Chen Lina’s ears like it had done the first time around.
It was evil. Sheer evil and poisonous. As if it belonged to a bloodthirsty demoness.
Like a crazed being, the woman laughed till her voice cracked.
And Chen Lina knew it might be a new hell for her the moment she took a step towards the shadow in the dark.
The vengeance, bitterness and agony twisted in the woman’s voice gave rise to hope in Chen Lina’s heart and she wanted to hold onto that tiny ray of hope even at the cost of herself.
...
After the meeting was over, Daisy did not linger any further to communicate with the higher-ups.
’’President, the driver and the guards...’’
’’No need,’’ she turned down Secretary Han’s offer and left the office room under everyone’s worshiping gazes.
Secretary Han, who was left behind, was soon surrounded by everyone who blamed him for being sneaky and hiding Daisy’s true potential from them. Their admiration and excitement was all projected on them.
’’Daisy, wait...’’
Daisy halted in her tracks when she heard the voice behind her.
Caleb caught up to her, ’’Are you leaving already?’’
Daisy raised an eyebrow and checked the time on her watch, ’’Or we can start the next meeting?"
Caleb coughed, ’’You have a good sense of humor...’’ he trailed off when he saw Daisy’s aloof face.
’’Is there something that you want to talk about?"
’’Ah, no no,’’ Caleb pointed his hand towards the elevator and he followed her in, ’’I was just asking if you were leaving alone. I could have dropped you. It’s not safe for a delicate girl like you to wander in the streets all alone by yourself at this hour.’’
’’My boyfriend is there,’’ Daisy said casually.
’’Oh that young man...’’ Caleb nodded thoughtfully, ’’Seems like a gentleman for him to wait for hours for you outside the company.’’
Daisy checked the time on her watch again.
She did not talk to Caleb again. After the elevators opened, Daisy went to the car straight without any delay.
When she entered the car, she was greeted by the sight of Ryle resting his face against the steering wheel. His hair fell above his forehead in a mess and Daisy almost had the urge to reach out to ruffle them.
’’Ryle... Ryle...’’ Daisy called out to him. frёewebnoѵēl.com
Ryle opened his eyes and looked at her with sleepy eyes, ’’Mm?"
It was almost the crack of the dawn and she had not expected the meeting to be delayed by so long. If not for Lu Xian’s abrupt arrival and the unexpected turn of events, then things could have been sorted quickly.
’’Done with the meeting?" the man whispered in a husky voice as he adjusted his head to a better position to have a proper view of her.
’’Let’s talk later,’’ Daisy alighted the car and walked to the other side before opening the door.
’’What are you doing?" Ryle sat up and leaned back on the seat before he stretched his hand towards her.
Daisy looked at his outstretched hand before gazing at their surroundings, ’’Move to the passenger seat first. I will drive.’’
’’But...’’
’’Move,’’ Daisy narrowed her eyes at the man.
Ryle groaned and alighted the car, motioning his hand inside. As Daisy entered the car, Ryle closed the door and went to the other side.
Once both of them were settled inside the car, the man pinched her chin and turned her face towards him, ’’You are worried someone will see us?"
When Daisy did not say anything, Ryle sighed, ’’I am hurt now.’’
’’The nature of your job doesn’t allow you to be in the limelight. Things about us have already gone public.’’
The feigned pained look on Ryle’s face faded with her crisp explanation. She was worried that his identity would be in danger if his face constantly went into the public circles.
Ryle moved his fingers from her chin and raked them in her hair. He leaned closer to her and placed a kiss on her forehead.
Daisy’s eyes fluttered close.
The man traced his lips lower and placed soft kisses over her closed eyes before he kissed the tip of her nose.
Just as his lips hovered over hers, Daisy pressed her palm on his chest and pushed him away.
Ryle fell back on his seat and looked at her deeply.
Daisy did not give him another look, ’’You... don’t be indecent. Close your eyes and sleep. I will drive.’’
The look in his eyes deepened. He did not look at her face and closed his eyes instead.
Daisy stepped on the accelerator. Halfway through when she thought that the man had already dozed off, he muttered, ’’You are so lovable, Daisy. You make it pretty difficult to not love you.’’
Daisy’s grip on the steering wheel tightened but in the end, she did not say anything and silence returned inside the car.
In the Chen Mansion.
Ivy led Aunty Lu inside her room. The woman marveled at the intricate royal decor of the place. It was not that she was unused to extravagance. She had seen plenty, be it while staying by Ryle’s mother’s side or even after she got married.
But the Chen Mansion was not just a showcase of extravagance. It almost felt like royalty.
’’I never knew Daisy was a princess,’’ Aunty Lu patted her chest, ’’But I always had a feeling that that girl was not ordinary.’’
Ivy smiled.
’’I just came yesterday so I did not have the chance to meet you and the other members properly so I asked the butler to lead me around.’’
’’There are no other members around here,’’ Ivy waved her hands as she said, ’’I also came recently... due to some unforeseen situations. Before, it was just Mr. Harper, Daisy and Angel living here, along with the servants and guards.’’
’’I see,’’ Aunty Lu nodded, ’’Master must be planning to stay here for a while since he called me here as well.’’
’’Probably,’’ Ivy had no idea about that but she knew that Daisy and Ryle shared a special relationship. She even saw the news about them yesterday but even if she neglected that, it was hard to deny what her eyes saw.
’’But then...’’ Aunty Lu seemed to have been reminded of something, ’’Master’s fiance is in US so only I cannot be sure about it too...’’
’’Fiancee?" Ivy cut her off.
Aunty Lu nodded, ’’What happened?"
’’I think you are mistaken,’’ Ivy smiled, ’’Or maybe you misunderstood something.’’
’’Huh?" Aunty Lu blinked in confusion.
At this moment, there were two consecutive knocks on the door and the butler appeared.
Ivy stood up, ’’Are you here to invite us for breakfast?"
’’Yes, Miss Ivy.’’
’’What about Mr. Harper and Daisy?"
’’I forgot to inform you. They came back around dawn and they had retreated to their room not long after. Little Miss and Young Master are already awake. The young master asked us to not disturb Missy’s sleep.’’
’’Young master?" Aunty Lu was stunned. She had lived with Ryle’s mother in Shanghai for a period of time so she was aware what this form of address referred to.
Once the butler left, Ivy smiled at the woman knowingly, ’’See, I told you. Let’s go now.’’
Despite her confusion, Aunty Lu followed Ivy but she had just taken a step when her footsteps came to a halt. She looked at a small photo frame lying near the dresser.
’’That..’’
