Chapter 160: Smart as ever

Daisy’s lips twitched.

"Why daisies? Tell me what they mean.’’

’’They don’t necessarily need to have a meaning,’’ she replied.

’’But I am certain that they have one,’’ Ryle was quick to retort.

Daisy stroked Angel’s baby hair as she pressed her face on the windshield without answering his question. A meaning behind the flowers? Even she had not comprehended one. Maybe she thought of him too often even though he had left only earlier this morning and since he occupied her thoughts so much, she wanted to occupy his too.

’’How was your first day at work, sweetheart?" Noting that she did not answer, he did not question her again as well.

Daisy paused at the ’sweetheart’ slightly, her cheeks had a slight tink of pink as she spoke, ’’Decent.’’

’’Is everyone welcoming towards you? Or did they put you through trouble?"

She could not help but laugh at how much he sounded like her guardian with that tone, ’’Oh what if they indeed bullied me?" she asked him teasingly.

’’Then we have better ways to get back at them,’’ Ryle’s tone, however, was not teasing in the slightest, ’’Just have the names with you and tell me where you encounter difficulties. I will help you tackle them all...’’

’’And my grandfather would be rolling in his grave,’’ Daisy sighed as she mentally shook her head at the man. He did not seem like he was joking when he said he would ’tackle’ anyone who made things difficult... for her.

Both the people remained silent for some time before Daisy called out to him, ’’Ryle?"

’’Mm...’’

’’Is everything good on your side?" she questioned him, thinking of how abruptly he had left in the morning after getting the call from someone. But she had been absent minded by the news of his sudden departure to question him about anything.

"Shall I count that as your worry for me?" the man questioned instead of answering her.

’’Curiosity instead,’’ Daisy closed her eyes.

Ryle chuckled, ’’Smart as ever.’’

In his office, he pushed himself to his feet and leaned against his desk, waiting for her to say something but all he could hear was the sound of her even breathing.

He looked at the phone in his hand. Asleep?

Ryle raised an eyebrow. He could not help but think back to how vigilant she used to be. Such a light sleeper that she would stir at the sound of a hand moving. He remembered the first time when she sat in his car as Daisy, during the annual event of Chens in Beijing. She had dozed off in his car but the moment he moved his hand to unbuckle her seatbelt, she grabbed his hand with a harsh grip with a wary gaze fixated on him.

Ryle turned around to look at Benjamin who was standing quietly and pretending to be a part of the backdrop while watching his devilish boss acting like a moody lover.

...

’Screech’

Daisy pulled Angel into her arms when the car came to a sudden halt that had her jerking forward.

The driver immediately pulled down the partition, ’’President, are you alright?"

Daisy nodded, ’’What happened?" she did not realize when she dozed off in the car.

The car had already reached the isolated locality of Chen Manor. There were no traffics or people in sight, except for the four cars that were lined up behind her and those were the elite guards arranged by Secretary Han for her protection.

Daisy concluded after doing a quick analysis of her surroundings.

’’Someone jumped in front of the car.’’

Daisy opened the door but she was quickly blocked by a bodyguard while two more rushed to the person in front, ’’President, let us check the situation first. It’s not safe.’’

Daisy glanced at Angel who was sleeping in her arms and she nodded. But when the people yanked up the person in front of the car, her expressions changed immediately as she saw a familiar figure.

’’Stop...’’ Daisy rushed out of the car with Angel in her arms.

The commotion stirred the girl awake and she started crying but Daisy did not stop to coax her because when she reached to stand in front of the car, she realized that she was not seeing things.

Ivy, who was supposed to be in Vegas, doing her dream job was held by both the guards, bloodied and bruised.

’’Ivy,’’ Daisy approached the young girl and patted her face, ’’Ivy...’’

’’Daisy...’’ she opened her eyes slightly as she whispered Daisy’s name when she saw her. A hint of relief crossed her face before she lost consciousness completely.

’’Help her inside the car.’’

An hour later in the Chen Mansion.

The doctor walked out of the guest room.

’’How is it?" Daisy approached the old man.

’’The girl is awake now but she seems to be in a daze,’’ the doctor adjusted his glasses and turned back to look at the closed door, ’’There are multiple bruises and external injuries. They are not life threatening but it seems like they are caused by violence.’’

’’You mean...’’ Daisy paused.

’’Yes, I am afraid she has been beaten. And there are signs of abuse as well. She has been choked and slapped and hit with strong objects...’’ The old man paused for a moment before he continued speaking, ’’I am prescribing some medication and vitamins for her.’’

Daisy nodded.

After the doctor was escorted out of the mansion by the Butler, Daisy took Angel who was playing in the living room and went to see Ivy. ƒrēewebnovel.com

She knocked on the door twice and when she heard a few light coughs, she stepped inside the room.

Ivy was lying on the bed weakly, her eyes half-closed.

Daisy approached her and sat on the other side of the bed, ’’We missed you.’’

As Ivy looked at her, Daisy placed Angel on the bed.

’’Vi...?" Angel blinked her big green eyes, ’’Vi... Vi...’’ she started clapping.

A genuine smile appeared on Ivy’s pale face.

The girl’s hair fell in a mess, covering her small face.

Daisy gently removed her hair from her face and tucked it behind her ear before she pulled the blanket up to her chest, ’’I have asked them to get you a cup of warm milk. Just take your medications and take a nap. You will feel a bit better during dinner.’’

’’Daisy, I...’’ the girl lowered her eyes but then she did not continue speaking.

’’If you don’t want to speak about it, then don’t. You have no obligations to,’’ Daisy said.

Ivy looked at her gratefully.

Daisy continued speaking, ’’However, I need a name.’’

’’No, it’s complicated... I.. They are not the ones to blame...’’ Ivy whispered.

"I don’t know the specific circumstances but I know you enough to be certain that under no circumstances do you deserve to be treated like this.’’

Ivy looked at her, eyes welling up with tears, ’’I lost everything.’’

Daisy had no idea what Ivy was talking about but she listened to the girl while she repeated those words again and again until her face was tear-stricken.

She stroked her head, ’’Get well soon and tell me who they are. It’s still not decided if you have lost anything or not. As long as you are alive, nothing is lost.’’

The butler knocked.

Ivy drank the milk and took her medications, she talked with Angel who was blabbering incomprehensible things to her as if she had seen her long time friend after quite some time. After Ivy dozed off, Daisy took the reluctant Angel with her and left the room.

She had just walked down when the butler approached her, ’’Elder miss, when you were with the guest, we received a package on your behalf.’’

He brought out an exquisite box and passed it to Daisy.

’’Mommy... Raeel... Raeeel...’’

"_" Daisy was speechless.

She did not even have to ask the butler in order to know who sent it to her but she did not expect Angel to become overenthusiastic at the sight of it. The little girl started struggling and reaching out to the box immediately.

Since the packaging was so delicate, Daisy doubted it was ’Angel safe’ so she held the little girl tightly in her arms and hid it from her her before taking her to the room to play. Some time after dinner, Angel dozed off after playing with her.

Daisy sat with Ivy for some time before retreating to her room.

After some thought, she leaned forward to the other side and opened the drawers to take out the box that she had placed inside.

As she opened it, an exquisite pendant greeted her view. It was not extravagant and Daisy was also not so much into jewelery but she could not help look at the small peal sized diamond that was black in color. It was attached to a delicate chain. When she picked it up in her hands and looked at it closely, the a dominant green shade seemed to sparkling from the black diamond.

Daisy blinked, surprised.

She lowered her body and placed her head on the pillow while observing it closely.

...

’Knock knock’

Daisy was stirred awake by the slow knocks on the door.

When she checked the time on the watch, she realized that it wasn’t even 6 am yet. Who was knocking so early in the morning?

Thinking of Ivy, she sat up on the bed.
