Chapter 139: Expecting a Young Mistress

Perhaps because he had a close experience of almost losing her, this time Helian Chen visited Alice more frequently. She had joined a school, she was treated well by her new parents and she was living the life that she always deserved and that made him feel relieved.

’’Will you be there for my 14th birthday, Brother Chen?" the little girl held his hand and swayed it back and forth as she glanced at him with doe eyes.

’’I might not be able to come.’’

Her beautiful eyes welled up with tears, ’’But why?"

’’Because I have my exams. I will come a week before your birthday and we will celebrate your birthday together. What do you think?" he wiped the drop of tear that rolled down her cheeks.

Her eyes sparkled and she immediately nodded.

The week before her birthday arrived and Helian Chen kept his promise to visit her. His father was busy with some work so he did not tag along and sent more bodyguards to protect him.

After meeting Alice’s adopted parents, Helian Chen asked the for permission to take Alice out for the day. They wanted to assign their own bodyguards to protect them but when they saw the number of guards that Old Master Chen had dispatched for his son’s protection, they did not know take any extra precautions anymore.

’’Brother Chen, will you take me out to see the flowering fields? They say it’s in full bloom.’’

’’Who says?" Helian Chen questioned the girl.

’’The girls in my school.’’

Then the guards watched in awe as their aloof young master raised his hand and stroked the little girl’s head, ’’We will go wherever you say...’’

One of the guards interrupted him and spoke in a slow voice such that only he could hear his words, ’’Young Master, there might not be any proper security system in the flowering fields or forests.’’

’’What are you here for?" The boy’s cold gaze cut through them.

The man was rendered speechless.

Right, with their elaborate procession, if Young Master still had to reconsider his travelling choices, then what was the use of having them here?

’’Alice...’’

The field seemed to be blanketed in a wide spread of poppies and in the midst of the red, there was that tiny figure who had donned a red spread. With her hands spread like wings, she rushed forward as if she was running.

The boy stood at a distance looking at her sprightly figure with a smile on his face.

When she finally got tired and stopped running, he walked towards her with a small wooden box that he took from one of the guards.

’’What is it?"

’’Open,’’ he passed it to her and sat beside her on the ground, much to the shock of his guards.

They looked at each other helplessly, ’’It seems like we can expect a Young Mistress,’’ one of the men whispered softly to which the others grunted in acknowledgement.

When Alice opened the wooden box, she found a small glass shaped rabbit sitting on a little cushion. There were two tiny apples in it’s paws, ’’Brother Chen, are you saying that you will get such a rabbit for me?"

Helian Chen looked at her in confusion. Didn’t the silly girl realize that he gave it to her because she and her actions both resembled a rabbit’s?

He had just opened his mouth to explain to him but she nodded eagerly, ’’This is so pretty. When you give me the real one, I will feed it and take care of it well.’’

As she spoke, she turned around and pointed her fingers in the opposite direction, ’’Brother Chen, see, there are peach blossom trees in the distance. I want to see-’’

The smile on his face died when the girl who was running away disappeared from his vision as smoke erupted from the ground.

’’Young Master!" The guards rushed towards him, ’’Young Master, be careful, there are landmines and traps around here,’’ they had inspected the whole place but they had not discovered anything abnormal because of how well it has been hidden.

However, Helian Chen had already rushed in the direction where Alice discovered, his face pale, ’’Alice... Alice!"

’Bang’

’Bang’

The sound of gunshots made him freeze for a moment but he bit his bottom lips and rushed forward, ’’Alice!"

The sound had him halting in his tracks. He slowly stepped past the peonies and he was greeted with a huge dip in the ground. The fake layer of ground that had covered the whole was shattered and Alice had fallen inside, hugging her wounded knees.

Relief washed over his features and the boy knelt to extend his hand towards her, ’’Come closer...’’

Holding her sob, she slowly stood up and stumbled towards him as he knelt on the ground. The trap was not too deep and his hand easily reached out to her.

He held her hand and tightened his grip.

’’Brother Chen!" Alice shouted, her eyes widening in fear.

’’What-’’

Before he could finish his words, he felt a blunt force hitting the back of his head and his vision went black.

When Helian Chen opened his eyes again, he had no idea how much time had passed.

As he looked around, he was greeted with darkness except for the moonlight that filtered through the slightly broken window inside the room. When he attempted to move, he realized that his hands and legs were tied with a rope.

So, he could only fall back on the wall, panting softly as he observed the place. There were many doors inside the room that he was in.

Suddenly, his eyes widened when he realized that there was another person inside the room.

"Alice?" the girl was still wearing the white dress that she had worn when she came out with him but it was ruined in dirt, "Alice,’’ he called out to her again.

The girl was leaning back on the corner of the wall, her eyes closed.
