Chapter 481: A different kind of air
"Siiiiiisss!!"
Before Jia knew it, a figure ambushed Jia at lightning speed. The group tightened around her shoulders and tears flowed like a broken dam.
"Sissss...I-I was so...wo-worried about youuuu. I saw the news a-and I just went blank..."
Jia couldn’t breathe in that crushing hug but right now, all that mattered to her was consoling her sister. From afar, she could see a certain brother-in-law in quiet distress. His gaze darted frequently at Lihua, always ever so concerned and doting. She wondered if the distress in his eyes was because of the recent threat to her life or that Lihua was putting her own life at risk with dehydration.
She patted her back. "I am fine, Lihua. Look, I am all fine!"
"You were not going to be fine yesterday!!"
Ugh cannot argue with that...
She sighed. "I am sorry, Lihua. I promise I will be more careful next time."
"Siissss..." she withdrew, tears completely staining her cheeks at this point.
"That’s an ugly look, little chili," Mingshen stood beside Jia in a casual posture, hands in his pockets. "At this rate, I smell a distinct scent in the air. What is it? Oh, divorce?"
With black gloomy clouds looming over Wei’s head, he approached Lihua, while throwing silent glares at Mingshen. "Why divorce?"
"You still wanna be her husband with the tears and snot that you see on her face?"
Wei’s expression turned icy. "Lihua is always beautiful."
"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, isn’t it?"
But when he received another pair of eyes sending glares to his side, he quietened down. "I was just joking, Spicy~ Your little sister is like Rapunzel. That’s why she should be kept locked inside a tower.’
Lihua - "..."
"You evil doctor, you always humiliate like this!"
He shrugged.
"Jiaaaa!!!"
A second force of nature came into play when Yang Bingqing zapped past Lihua and pulled Jia into her hug.
"My dear Jia! You scared the hell out of meeee!" She burst into tears. "Do you know how worried I was?"
"Aunt?" Jia’s eyes widened. "You are here too?"
"Of course! I heard you will be dropping a visit here and I couldn’t wait to meet you at home, so Cheng and I came flying here! Right, Cheng?"
Her husband, as dutiful as always, merely gave a nod. "Hm."
Jia said, "Sorry for making you worry, Aunt."
"Aish, don’t be sorry, my dear. I understand your job is tough..." so she said with another burst of tears.
Mingshen grimaced at the second ugly face that came into his view. "There is just too much water stored in your and little chili’s eyes."
"Shut up! What will you understand!?" she glared at him, then scanned him from head to toe.
"Why are your clothes the same as yesterday?"
Jia froze and swallowed a gulp. It was true their relationship, in one night, had leapt several steps ahead, but for the elders to know this too? She felt she wasn’t ready for that discussion yet.
"Now that I think about it..." her eyes narrowed. "Jia is still in her police uniform."
Before Mingshen could open his mouth and say something untoward, Jia burst into a nervous chuckle. "I crashed at a friend’s place last night. So I-I wasn’t really home haha..."
Lihua cried. "Why didn’t you crash the night here sis! I kept calling you so many times!"
Ugh...
Yang Bingqing then cast her sharp gaze at her son, who was the least bothered to provide any explanation but before the threat of a slipper that could come crashing down on his head at any point, he was forced to say.
"Why are you looking at me like I am some rebellious teenager who escaped to secretly smoke? I returned to my lab as always."
"But Bojing said you weren’t at the lab."
That crybaby assistant of mine!
He smiled. "Does he have X-Ray vision to scan the entire lab space? No, right? If you haven’t noticed it yet, my lab is quite huge."
"Huuuhhh..." her eyes squinted further.
"Can you stop giving me that look you used to give me at sixteen? I am thirty for devil’s sake now."
"Thirty-one! You will be thirty-one in five days!" She glared.
"Well, that makes your argument even worse actually..."
"Shut up! I am saying that it will be your thirty-first birthday in five days but...but where is my grandchild!" She cried.
Jia’s lips parted in disbelief lightly.
Oh shoot! Yeah, it will be Mingshen’s birthday in a few days!
It wasn’t like Jia had forgotten but with the suicide bomber chaos, she felt it had certainly slipped out of her mind - for which she did feel guilty about. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Lihua sniffled. "Evil doctor’s birthday, right? I guess it will be a big celebration."
"No, please," he dryly said, "Not interested in any grand celebration-"
Yang Bingqing glared again. "Of course it will be a grand celebration! It’s your birthday!"
"Like I said, I am not a child."
"Hey! Talk to me with respect. I am the one who gave birth to you after nine excruciating months! How dare you suggest a cold celebration?"
"You-"
"Shoo, shoo. We will discuss that later," she waved at him in dismissal and looked at Jia instead, "For now, I want to play with Jia," she sniffled. "It was only yesterday but it feels like years have passed by!"
"Sis, sis, come with me! Weiyun and Limei are eager to meet too~"
Jia shone. "Of course! Where are my two cutie pies?"
Mingshen dropped lower and whispered in her ear. "How mean. Wasn’t I your cutie pie until last night? Now, you are already handing away that position?"
A stomp of her heel on top of his foot sent a jolt of pain down his nerves that made him promptly back away with the reason and clear his throat.
"...Whatever. I win," he murmured.
Jia was speechless.
Is he comparing himself to three year olds?
While the two passed by Yang Bingqing, she tugged at her husband’s elbow and nudged him backward.
"Cheng," she whispered. "Are you seeing what I am seeing?"
Yang Cheng blinked twice. "I don’t know...what you are seeing."
"Jia and Mingshen! I am seeing them!"
"We see them everyday," he was genuinely confused.
Her brow twitched. "Yes, but not like this. Don’t you feel something is...different about them? Like they are carrying a different air about them?"
Yang Cheng took another look at the two and back at his wife. "They are the same."
"Oof! You should sharpen your love radar as well," she pouted. "There is definitely something off about them. And I will definitely find it out tonight!"
