Chapter 17: Simulation 7

Alisa sat on an extremely comfortable chair.

Comfortable... to the point that she felt if she remained sitting on it for a little longer, she would no longer have the desire to stand up again.

She let out a light sigh before quietly taking out a small piece of candy.

She placed it inside her mouth.

She began to suck on it slowly, as though savoring every detail of it.

She was not the type to devour food quickly.

On the contrary, she liked to eat very slowly, and to give herself enough time to enjoy every flavor and every bit of sweetness, as if rushing the matter ruined its enjoyment completely.

To her, even a small candy deserved to be enjoyed properly.

She raised her head slightly.

Several holographic screens lit up in front of her, each displaying a different scene from the others.

She watched them silently for a few moments while continuing to lazily move the candy around inside her mouth.

"It seems the new generation... includes quite a fair number of talented individuals."

She paused for a moment, then moved the candy slightly with her teeth before suddenly frowning.

"And that means... more work. Ah... I really hate this. I want to resign."

That was not really a genuine option for her in the first place.

Because she knew very well what would happen if she did. Her father would give her a long... boring... never-ending lecture.

A lecture capable of making her ears hurt before it even reached the halfway point.

Just thinking about it made her feel exhausted.

Honestly... she hated that her father had agreed to the director position in the first place.

If he had not... she would probably be living comfortably right now, without annoying responsibilities, and far away from all this exhaustion.

But what could she do?

Other than become the best teacher she could possibly be. She did not want to disappoint her father.

She had always considered him her role model.

The person who had seen great potential in her from the very beginning.

And the annoying part... was that this exact thing sometimes made her hate her exceptional talent.

Because talent, to her, meant expectations.

And expectations... meant more work, and that was the thing she hated most in life.

Click.

"Oh."

Alisa turned around after hearing the sound of slow footsteps approaching.

But the moment her eyes landed on who it was, she immediately frowned.

And how could she not?

Every time she saw him, she was overcome by a disgusting feeling that was difficult to describe.

A feeling that almost made her skin crawl from irritation, and she had not even tried to hide it.

On the contrary, she openly displayed her disgust toward him.

But strangely enough... Clarin was not bothered by it at all.

Instead, a gentle and calm smile appeared on his face, making Alisa mutter unconsciously:

"...Disgusting."

"Oh?" Clarin said as he stopped beside her. "Are you referring to me?"

He gave her a brief glance before shifting his gaze to the screen in front of them.

"Yes. Who else would it be?"

"Ah... You truly hurt my feelings. I feel like my heart is breaking because of your cruelty."

"Tsk." Alisa turned her face away in disdain. "Stop acting kind in front of me. You make me feel even more disgusted."

This time, Clarin did not respond.

He simply fixed his crimson eyes on the battles unfolding between the students.

If Neron were here... he would recognize him immediately.

And he would understand the real reason why Alisa felt that disgust every time he approached her.

Because in truth... Clarin was not human at all.

Rather, he was a high-ranking demon who had infiltrated the academy years ago, waiting for the promised day.

The day the academy’s defenses would be destroyed from within.

His mission was simple: identify weak points, sabotage the barriers, and pave the way for the attack of the Atran Organization.

But more dangerous than that... he was not alone.

The organization’s members were spread throughout every corner of the academy.

Guards. Students. Workers. Even vendors.

They had infiltrated its depths to an extreme degree, like parasites silently gnawing away.

Even if someone discovered their plan, it would already be too late to stop what was going to happen.

What was destined... would happen no matter what.

And yet, there was one strange thing about Clarin.

He was supposed to stay as far away from Alisa as possible.

She was unusually wary of him, as though her instincts were screaming warnings at her.

But instead of staying away... he was doing the exact opposite.

He was enjoying talking to her. More than that...

he deliberately got closer whenever the opportunity arose, enjoying the way she looked at him with clear disgust.

Even if that would one day lead to his identity being exposed... he, honestly, did not care much.

"How I truly envy you. Your job seems enjoyable." Clarin paused for a moment before adding in a complaining tone:

"Unlike me... I have to give boring lectures all the time. Do you know how much that makes me feel bored? So much that last time I fell asleep in the middle of a lecture."

"I don’t care."

Alisa replied coldly, without even looking at him.

Her eyes remained fixed on the three-dimensional screens stretched out in front of her, as if his presence beside her meant nothing at all.

At that moment, some students began appearing inside the room one by one.

A look of shock appeared on many of their faces at first, as if they were still unable to comprehend what had happened.

But after only a few moments... their expressions gradually returned to normal.

In fact, some of them did not seem very bothered by their early elimination, and on the contrary, they began discussing enthusiastically what had happened, and how everything had seemed so realistic.

Clarin smiled faintly, not interested in the students’ conversations around him.

"Ah... how cruel you are. Sometimes I wonder if your heart is made of ice."

"And sometimes I wonder if your real face is more disgusting than this one."

"That really hurts, you know?"

"Then die." she said with complete indifference, before pushing the candy deeper into her mouth, as if she had not said anything worth paying attention to.

Clarin smiled bitterly.

"Unfortunately, I can’t. I still have a lot of work that must be done."

"What a pity."

He tilted his head slightly, while his eyes shifted toward one of the battles displayed on the screen.

"Anyway... it seems there are some interesting students this year."

"Hmm."

"That black-haired boy... his movement style is unusual."

Alisa finally turned to him out of the corner of her eye.

"Do I look to you like I’m interested enough to discuss this with you?"

"No." His smile widened slightly. "But I enjoy trying to make you interested."

Alisa sighed in annoyance, then brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Don’t you have anything better to do?"

"In fact? No."

"This explains why you are so annoying."

"I feel like I’m being bullied."

"And I feel like I’m about to vomit."

He laughed again, as if her words were an excellent joke, then sat down on the seat beside her without any permission.

"I didn’t expect you to prepare a seat for me... as if you were expecting my arrival. How nice."

Alisa immediately frowned.

"Disgusting. Who even allowed you to sit down in the first place?" fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

He shrugged his shoulders indifferently.

"I considered your silence as agreement."

"I wasn’t silent."

"Then... I took it as non-verbal agreement."

Alisa closed her eyes for a moment, as if trying to prevent herself from committing a murder.

"I swear... if it weren’t for the fact that my father would scold me, I would have killed you a long time ago."

Clarin raised an eyebrow with clear interest.

"Oh? Is that an admission that you think about me a lot?"

She slowly opened her eyes and looked at him with lethal coldness.

"It’s an admission that you are the biggest source of annoyance in my life."

His smile widened even more, as if she had just given him the greatest possible compliment.

"Wonderful. I’m glad I hold an important place for you."

"Get out."

"No."

"Get out."

"No."

Alisa stared at him for several long seconds.

Then she sighed in resignation, as if realizing that arguing with him was a waste of time.

"Just... stay quiet for five minutes."

"Understood and obeyed."

Alisa took out another piece of candy after finishing the first one.

But just as she was about to eat it, she felt a gaze piercing the side of her face.

"What is wrong with you now?"

Clarin was pointing with his eyes toward the candy, muttering in an unclear voice:

"Um... ca..."

She frowned while staring at his strange gestures. After a few moments, she finally understood what he was trying to say.

"Do you want one?"

He nodded quickly.

Then, without any hesitation, she threw the candy directly into her mouth.

"...It’s mine alone."

"That’s unfair."

Alisa did not care about his response and turned her attention back to one of the screens.

It was showing a battle of a group consisting of four students against a beast of the infant rank (D) inside the simulation.

Honestly, it did not even look like a real fight.

As soon as they began cooperating, the beast did not last long.

It fell quickly. Alisa was slightly surprised.

"...Hmm."

She slowly moved the candy with her tongue before sighing as she stood up and adjusted her clothes.

The simulation was about to end. Most of the students had already been eliminated.

And the room was filled with noise and excited discussions.

It was time for her to do her job as a teacher.

However, it did not seem that any team had managed to obtain the flag yet.

"Annoying."

She noticed from the corner of her eye that Clarin stood up immediately after she did, smiling as usual.

It made her grind her teeth slightly.

She truly hated him.

But she decided to ignore him. In a few moments, all the students would appear here anyway.

However... her steps suddenly stopped.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she looked at the screen she had been watching moments ago.

There, the relatively thin boy was digging inside the beast’s body, while she noticed him holding something in his hand.

Something... that changed her expression.
