Chapter 524: Chapter 520: Staring at Xu Wenwan
Gu Jiaojiao knew what was going on. She quickly moved to the next room, where she found two other people in the same state as Old Nine, their faces unnaturally dark.
’This is a sign that their fortune has been stolen.’
The two of them walked out of the hospital together. Lu Yuanbin and his underling were waiting outside. When they saw Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao, they immediately hurried over.
"How did it go?"
Leng Yuan nodded. "We’ll talk when we get back."
Back at their residence, Lu Yuanbin saw the grim expressions on Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao’s faces and realized the matter wasn’t simple. He sent his underling away before asking.
"Brother Leng, what on earth is going on?"
"You two haven’t said a word since you got back from the hospital. Is Old Nine’s condition that serious?"
He knew Gu Jiaojiao practiced medicine, so perhaps she had already examined Old Nine.
Leng Yuan shook his head.
"It’s not his condition. There’s something strange about Old Nine himself. The last time we met, he was as arrogant as ever. I beat him up, and he was fine after resting for a little over half a month. This time, he falls off a bed and breaks an arm and a leg? That’s just too unlucky."
Lu Yuanbin nodded. "Yeah! It is strange, now that you mention it. Old Nine isn’t even forty."
For his age, he should be in decent shape. Besides, Old Nine knew a few moves himself. There’s no way a simple fall should have injured him so badly.
"Yuan Bin, I need you to watch someone for me. Don’t let her notice."
Lu Yuanbin was still preoccupied with Old Nine’s situation. He was a little taken aback by the sudden change in topic. "Watch who?"
"Xu Wenwan. Village Chief Xu’s daughter."
The name didn’t ring a bell for Lu Yuanbin, but he knew her story.
Xu Wenwan was the daughter who had been switched at birth with Village Chief Xu’s real child. She had only recently returned to the Xu Family and had just gotten married two days ago to Yun Hao.
Chen JianShe had told him about it the last time he visited. The main reason it stuck in his mind was that their wedding had been a complete farce. People in the Qingshan Team were still talking about it, calling them the unluckiest couple in the team’s history.
It was the first time Lu Yuanbin had ever heard of something like that, which is why it left such a strong impression.
"Why watch her?"
Leng Yuan didn’t explain. He only instructed, "Just watch her. Don’t get any funny ideas. And warn your men not to mess with people they shouldn’t, or they’ll have to bear the consequences themselves."
Lu Yuanbin tensed up.
His Brother Leng hadn’t used those four words in a long time. In the past, whenever he said that phrase, it was a sure sign that he and Chen JianShe were in for a world of hurt.
The aftermath was usually brutal.
’Looks like this business with Xu Wenwan is really important.’
"Don’t worry, Brother Leng. I’ll make sure to instruct my men properly. I guarantee they’ll all be on their best behavior and won’t get any funny ideas."
After arranging for Xu Wenwan to be watched, Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao finally remembered the two children.
...
Having never been parents before, they had actually forgotten about the two children for a moment. Fortunately, someone had been watching over them and had already taken them to get something to eat.
In the end, the four of them went to buy supplies for the New Year together. At some point during their shopping, Gu Jiaojiao went off on her own to find Chen Sanmei.
After they finished shopping, the four of them went to the designated meeting spot.
Old Man Chen was waiting there with his donkey cart.
Old Man Chen had been injured while serving as a soldier in his youth and was never able to have children. It was just him and his wife at home.
On her way over, Gu Jiaojiao had specifically bought two large meat buns from the state-run restaurant. They were exceptionally big and generously stuffed with meat filling.
The meat buns were wrapped in oil paper and were still steaming hot.
Gu Jiaojiao offered them to Old Man Chen, but he refused.
The old man rarely smiled and had a rather stern demeanor, which made the village children afraid of him. Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t one for excessive sympathy, nor was she a bleeding heart.
But this old man had fought in the war against the invaders, and for that, Gu Jiaojiao felt a deep, heartfelt admiration and respect for him.
"Grandpa Chen, these aren’t a gift. I know Grandma Chen often makes tofu, and I was hoping to trade these buns for a block of it."
"Leng Yuan and I don’t grow any soybeans, so we have to rely on you. If you don’t accept the buns, I’ll just die from craving it! I’ve been wanting some for so long."
When Gu Jiaojiao put on a cute and pleading act, she was utterly charming. Even Old Man Chen’s stern face couldn’t hold out against such a sweet young woman, and he immediately replied.
"You can just come get the tofu tonight. I don’t want the buns."
Gu Jiaojiao forcefully pushed them into his hands. "If you don’t take the buns, then I’m not taking the tofu."
