Chapter 505: Chapter 501: Severing Ties

Chen Xiaoli turned to leave.

Xu Wenwan’s tone turned vicious.

"Since you don’t want to be my sister-in-law, I’ll just act like I don’t have one. In the future, whether I get rich or become an official, I expect every last one of you to stay away and not come sucking up to me."

Xu Wenwan had had her fill of disappointment with these relatives. Since they didn’t treat her like family, she no longer wanted to have anything to do with them.

These short-sighted people had no idea what earth-shattering changes the future held.

But she knew.

She knew the national college entrance exam would be reinstated the year after next, and that private businesses would be permitted again. With her formula for facial soap, she was certain she could earn her first pot of gold before the economy recovered.

Then, she would buy up as much property as she could.

That way, she could become a rich woman in the future without having to lift a finger, living the life she always wanted.

As for the Xu Family, they deserved nothing more than to live in the countryside and farm for the rest of their lives.

Chen Xiaoli rolled her eyes.

She’d always thought her sister-in-law was a bit unhinged, but now it seemed she was seriously sick in the head. She spent all day talking like she was the star of some tear-jerking melodrama.

’Become an official and get rich with a brain like that?’ Chen Xiaoli didn’t buy it for a second.

But she was sure of one thing.

No matter how rich Xu Wenwan became or what high-ranking official she turned into, she, Chen Xiaoli, wouldn’t give a damn. She would absolutely never go begging at her door.

That was her own decision, however. As for the rest of the Xu Family, she would relay Xu Wenwan’s words to them.

"Fine. I’ll tell them what you said."

With that, she walked out.

Chen Xiaoli showed no concern for saving Xu Wenwan’s face. The moment she stepped out of the room, she repeated Xu Wenwan’s words to Xu Chongfeng and Xu Chongshan, then immediately left without another moment’s pause.

The relatives outside saw everything. They all exchanged uneasy glances. Xu Chongfeng and Xu Chongshan’s expressions darkened, but since it was a wedding day, they didn’t make a scene.

Xu Chongfeng quickly made an excuse to smooth things over.

Xu Wenwan never came out to toast the guests, not even at the very end, which set everyone to gossiping.

After the friends and relatives had departed, the educated youths left as well. The tables, chairs, and benches in the courtyard had all been borrowed through the efforts of Xu Chongfeng and Xu Chongshan, and in the end, they were the ones who returned them.

As for their sister, Xu Wenwan, this was the last straw. Xu Chongfeng and Xu Chongshan lost the last shred of familial affection they had for her.

They didn’t say much, only telling the couple to live a good life before they left.

Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan had already headed home around noon.

’Watching the drama was one thing, but eating was more important.’

Chen Jianshe, on the other hand, had stayed until the grand finale. He then ran over to share the gossip with the two of them.

Chen Jianshe looked completely exasperated. "Sister-in-law Chen is such an easygoing person, but she was so angry she just stormed off. I can’t imagine what Xu Wenwan must have said to her."

Chen Jianshe knew Chen Xiaoli well and was familiar with her temperament. For someone so good-natured to be so provoked by Xu Wenwan that she left without even eating... that Xu Wenwan was a real piece of work.

Leng Yuan wasn’t interested in such things.

Gu Jiaojiao, however, wasn’t surprised.

’This cousin of mine is vain and brainless,’ she thought. ’She’s absorbed Yun Hao’s luck. The Yun Hao of today no longer has his male-lead halo; who knows what will become of him now.’

’Based on what I know about my cousin, Xu Wenwan definitely didn’t want to go through with this marriage. Her family must have done something to force her to agree.’

’Even though she agreed to the wedding, in her eyes, those relatives from the village are beneath her. Of course she wouldn’t go out and toast them.’

’Gu Jiaojiao had seen this type of thing clearly back in her original world.’

’Before her father struck it rich, their family background was quite ordinary. Her second uncle had married first, and since their circumstances were average at the time, the aunt he married was also from a common family.’

’Later, when her father got rich, her second uncle’s status rose as well. Her aunt then started to look down on the poor relatives from her own side of the family.’

’As for Xu Wenwan’s snobbishness—her habit of scorning the poor to fawn on the rich—it wasn’t identical to her aunt’s, but it just went to show that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.’
