Chapter 493: Chapter 489: Offending People

The speaker was an aunt from the main branch of the Xu Family. She had a habit of speaking without any regard for others’ feelings, and she never thought before she talked—a classic case of someone with a screw loose.

A relative standing nearby heard this and quickly nudged her arm with an elbow.

"What are you talking about!"

But the aunt didn’t think she’d said anything wrong.

"What did I say that was wrong? It’s not like you didn’t hear it. The only one who didn’t was Xiumin. I just don’t know what that educated youth, Yun Hao, sees in Xu Wenwan. Could it really just be her face?"

If her previous comment had been thoughtless, this one was downright aggressive.

No one knew what was wrong with her. Saying something like that on such a joyous occasion was a slap in the face to the hosts. Everyone hurried to smooth things over.

"Alright, you just love to run your mouth. You can’t say things like that today."

Chen Xiumin simply pretended she hadn’t heard a thing. ’Let her say what she wants.’

Ever since this daughter had come back, all Chen Xiumin had felt was one humiliation after another.

Before, she would never have let someone take digs at her like this. But now... ’I should just keep my mouth shut.’

Chen Xiumin knew the woman spoke without thinking. If she retorted, the aunt would just bring up more of Xu Wenwan’s shameful deeds, leaving Chen Xiumin with even less dignity.

This was probably the first time the aunt had ever felt so triumphant in front of Chen Xiumin, and she was feeling quite pleased with herself. She didn’t actually want to have a falling out with Chen Xiumin, though. After all, Chen Xiumin’s husband was the village chief and still managed village affairs.

"Alright, alright, I won’t say any more."

"But you can’t blame Xiumin for not raising this daughter well. Before, that girl Chuchu was so wonderful! Pretty, hardworking, kind-hearted, and she knew her manners."

The others nodded in agreement. That much was true.

Chuchu was a pretty girl. As elders who had watched her grow up, they were all fond of her.

It was such a shame. Who would have guessed she wasn’t their biological daughter?

Now the biological daughter was back, and her disposition was worlds apart from Chuchu’s. No one liked a girl who was mixed up with men in an improper way.

Thankfully, she was getting married now. In time, the whole affair would eventually be forgotten.

"Xiumin, speaking of which, none of us knew anything about this. You just suddenly told us the two kids were getting married. It’s all so fast."

Chen Xiumin gave a dry laugh. "Fast? What’s so fast about it? You all know Yun Hao and Wen Wan grew up together. They’ve actually liked each other for a while, and the families were agreeable. We were just waiting for Yun Hao to return to get them married, but we never expected all this other business to happen."

"Thankfully, Yun Hao’s parents are still fond of Wen Wan, so they pushed for the two to get married quickly."

"Since the kids are willing, there’s no reason to delay."

After Chen Xiumin finished her explanation and saw that everyone seemed placated, she let out a sigh of relief.

Fearing they would keep asking questions, she immediately had someone bring out peanuts and melon seeds and set them on the table.

With snacks to munch on, the group’s conversation quickly shifted to other recent village happenings.

Chen Xiumin was still worried about Xu Wenwan. She stepped out of the room and went over to Chen Xiaoli. "Xiao Li, has Wen Wan been causing any trouble?"

Chen Xiaoli shook her head. "She’s been especially quiet today. Hasn’t made a peep."

Chen Xiumin nodded and went into the room. Seeing Xu Wenwan sitting obediently on the bed, her tone softened.

"Wen Wan, you’re getting married today. Even though Mother is sad to see you go, you have to get married. After the wedding, you must build a good life with Yun Hao."

"Yun Hao is a good kid."

Although they were in a hurry to marry their daughter off, Village Chief Xu knew Yun Hao’s character, and Chen Xiumin was also reassured. He was a decent young man.

Xu Wenwan’s eyes flickered. ’I didn’t expect there was still someone in this family who cared about me.’

"Mother... after I’m married, can I still come back often?"
