Chapter 468: Chapter 464: Fellow Sufferers
"Upset?"
Gu Jiaojiao repeated.
Just as she was about to speak, Li Hongmei cut her off.
"You should be upset. After all, you used to be so in love with Yun Hao. Now that he and Xu Wenwan are married, I can understand why you’re not feeling great."
Li Hongmei’s words carried a tone of shared misery.
She had always resented Gu Jiaojiao for being prettier and richer than her. She just couldn’t accept it.
Why should people be born into different classes? Why did some get to live in luxury from birth, while she had to struggle so much? It was one thing to be plain-looking, but her family was poor too. She had to fight with all her might just to survive.
That was why she was jealous of Gu Jiaojiao, who never had to worry about food or clothing.
But Li Hongmei had no idea that Gu Jiaojiao was just putting on a front. In reality, she only had so much money on her. A stepmother was in charge of her family back home, and that stepmother would never send her any money. She was just pretending to be richer than she was.
After Gu Jiaojiao arrived, she had guessed what Li Hongmei was thinking, but she couldn’t be bothered to explain herself.
Even if she did explain, Li Hongmei wouldn’t believe her. Besides, a person so prone to jealousy would just find another reason to be envious if this one didn’t exist. She wouldn’t listen to reason.
This was why Gu Jiaojiao kept her distance from Li Hongmei.
Li Hongmei was a genuine scoundrel.
The kind of person who would cast aside all conscience and morality to achieve her goals.
The reason Li Hongmei was speaking so pleasantly now was that no matter how outstanding or beautiful Gu Jiaojiao was, she had ended up just like her—unable to get the man she loved.
"Gu Jiaojiao, I guess we’re in the same boat now."
After saying this, Li Hongmei even shot Gu Jiaojiao a pitying glance.
Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t help but roll her eyes. "Li Hongmei, are you out of your mind? If you’re not thinking straight, I can kick you into the river to wash your brain out for you. Then you’ll know whether I like Educated Youth Yun or not!"
With that, she couldn’t be bothered with Li Hongmei anymore and turned to leave.
Li Hongmei didn’t believe her.
"You really don’t care about Yun Hao anymore? Impossible."
Gu Jiaojiao ignored her.
Li Hongmei continued.
"Back then, you deliberately flirted with Leng Yuan just to make Yun Hao understand your feelings. You even drugged Leng Yuan! It was all for Yun Hao. I don’t believe you don’t really like him."
Gu Jiaojiao hadn’t wanted to deal with Li Hongmei, but the woman’s mouth was just too foul. She spun around and marched toward her.
Li Hongmei was startled and couldn’t help but take two steps back.
"Wh-what are you doing?"
Gu Jiaojiao rolled up her sleeves.
"Li Hongmei, I think your head isn’t on straight. I’m going to send you to the river right now to give that brain of yours a good wash."
Li Hongmei grew frightened. Gu Jiaojiao’s temper had become something else since she got together with Leng Yuan. She’d gotten fierce, too. She had previously beaten Chen Shulan’s face until it was swollen like a pig’s head and even gave her a couple of vicious kicks.
She had been standing on the sidelines watching at the time. She had no idea when Gu Jiaojiao had become such a shrew, but it didn’t stop her from recognizing that she was no match for Gu Jiaojiao at all.
The river water was already cold in winter. If Gu Jiaojiao really threw her in, she might just lose her life right here.
Watching Gu Jiaojiao striding toward her, Li Hongmei swallowed nervously.
"Gu Jiaojiao, d-don’t be rash! Killing someone is against the law!"
Gu Jiaojiao ignored her and kept walking straight toward her.
Li Hongmei was terrified. She frantically tried to think of a way to save herself.
The more nervous a person is, the more they can unleash their hidden potential.
Recalling what she had said to provoke Gu Jiaojiao, she immediately shouted, "I was wrong! I know you definitely don’t like Yun Hao! You did all that because of Leng Yuan! It’s because you like Leng Yuan so much that you did those things!"
