Chapter 94: Making Her Smile
Three of them were startled but they had been talking in hushed voices and the door to her room was closed, so they hoped she didn’t hear them.
Before Huria could get up and head over, Zyair was already out of his seat.
"Can I?" he expectantly asked Huria and she nodded her approval.
Zyair moved like a flash and entered her room, closing the door behind him. Skyla was sitting up in bed, looking exhausted, her eyes were still closed.
"Miss Skyla!" He slowly called her out, not wanting to startle her. His voice like a smooth symphony awakened her and she moved her head and stared at him in astonishment.
Her irises enlarged taking in his tall stature and those ebony locks that were falling into his concerned eyes. Eyes that held only her image at that moment.
"Mr Zyair?" she hoarsely choked out, completely baffled finding him there.
"How are you feeling now?" He took a small step towards her and halted. His hands were tightly clasped behind his back, curbing the itch to touch her.
His question threw her deep into thought. Physically or emotionally? Because it was bleak in both aspects. She was hurting and the lies her tormentor had made her utter were weighing heavily on her.
But she couldn’t betray this man, no matter what.
"I am– I—- don’t —-," Her voice broke and she snatched her gaze away from his hypnotic one and bore it into her fumbling hands.
"It’s ok, it’s ok, you don’t have to answer," Zyair raised his hands, trying to calm her down, seeing how lost she was for words.
"Can I sit with you?" He tentatively asked, placing his hand on the back of the chair and dragging it slightly back.
"Yes!" She answered softly, still not looking at him.
Zyair draped himself elegantly on the chair, closely watching her nervously pick at her fingers. He wanted to bring her out of this depressing state she was stuck in.
"Want to hear a story? A funny one? Actually, it’s slightly embarrassing," he asked sheepishly and the tension in the air between them slightly lightened as she lifted her head and slowly nodded.
"Right, so you know there was a boy once and he was not a good drinker. One day he had too many at the bar and thought he was some untouchable anime protagonist with super cool powers. He decided to show them to the whole bar in his drunken stupor. Trying to act cool and show off. He climbed over the bar and jumped off, trying to fly away with his imaginary wings. Guess what happened next?"
He slightly tilted his head at her and blinked.
"Umm, he fell?" Skyla answered with a small smile breaking on her face.
"Bingo, and broke his nose. Ahh, poor guy," Zyair shook his head, "The whole bar laughed at him and he learnt not to get so drunk that you end up breaking your nose. Tch, tch."
He made funny noises in the end, making her giggle. The gloominess surrounding them lifted and he felt his world brightening up again.
"Ouch! That must have hurt," Skyla winced.
"You bet, and you know his nose became a little twisted after that. And people still tease him and say, ’the one with the crooked snout’."
"That’s not a very nice name." She began to ease into conversation.
"Yes, so he began to dress up as a joker and put on that big red nose and tell jokes. Want to hear one of his jokes?" Zyair relaxed in his posture, his body eased down as he placed both his hands on his thighs. Skyla bobbed her head up and down to give her approval.
"There was a very pretty girl with a red dress, red shoes and red hair. One day a boy walked to her and asked. ’Do you know how to give CPR?’
The girl asked, ’Why?’
’Because you took my breath away,’ the boy said and smirked."
She placed her dainty hand in front of her face and her sonorous laugh rang out which always stirred up these touchy feelings deep in
his heart.
"This was hilarious, thank you for making me laugh. I needed it," she confessed and tucked some of her loose hair behind her ear.
"I know," he slowly said, taking a small yawn. He hadn’t slept in more than 24 hours now. But he still had no plans of sleeping until he ensured she was safe and comfortable. So he carefully asked.
"Would you like to talk about it? I am here if you do." freēwēbnovel.com
And the smile that had come slowly faded and his heart clenched in the worst possible ways.
She would never tell him the truth, she couldn’t. Or everything could end in disaster. He might confront Doran and the whole fiasco would lead to more chaos and she would end up losing her job.
Zyair might even stop supporting Doran’s company and all blame would fall on her. She wasn’t sure how much abuse she could handle.
"I will be fine, I don’t want to talk about it. Please," she sniffled, remembering what Doran had done to her. Her hands clenched together and her body shook in fear.
"You don’t have to, stay relaxed and rest. I will ensure you are safe here. No one will harm you," he quietly told her, knowing how much she was hurting.
"And about the office." fгeewebnovёl.com
"You needn’t worry, we will handle it." A relief washed over her at his words so she asked.
"Can I have some water?" The weather had gotten comparatively hot now that they were in the middle of the summer season.
Zyair got up poured her a glass of cold water from the table and handed it over. Skyla took it carefully so as not to touch his long fingers. She thanked him and gulped it down to wet her parched throat. He settled back in his chair.
The door knocked, Huria and Lawrence entered soon after and saw that Skyla was sitting in a relaxed posture. Zyair was seated on the chair at some distance carefully watching over her.
"Miss Skyla, how are you?" Lawrence’s concerned rich voice reached her and she offered him a wounded smile. He went over to her and gently touched her shoulder, letting her know he was there.
"I am alright, Lawrence," she assured him.
"My girl is the strongest gal in this universe," Huria announced, going over and wrapping her in her arms and kissing her head.
"I agree a million times," Lawrence quickly added as both of them sat beside Skyla to shower her with praises and lighten her mood with jokes.
Soon she was smiling with them and stole a glance at her mysterious boss who had lifted her spirit. And just as she knew it in her heart he would, he was watching her with these intense and yet affectionate eyes of his.
The eyes she wanted to drown in at times and disappear from this cruel world she lived in. He tilted his head and continued to hold her gaze watching her turn tomato red and hurriedly look away.
A sly smile appeared under the mask but no one saw it.
