Chapter 289: The Woman In The Corner

Skyla stared at the woman with the same coloured hair as she did but old enough to be her mother. The fear embossed in her emerald eyes was something Skyla could relate to. Her clothes were torn from places and her face was strewn with so many bruises.

Who was this woman?

Why was she in such a dilapidated condition?

How long was she here?

Was this how he planned on keeping her as well?

So many questions took root in her jumbled brain.

Skyla sucked in a breath that hurt her insides, how could this man be so evil to keep someone like that.

Doran offered her no explanation though. He jerked her head to face him.

"So get yourself comfortable because you are not going anywhere, this is where you will live from now on." Leaning closer his thin lips began to ravage her in a kiss which made disgust rise like boiling water inside her, scaring and tormenting her.

What was this? This wasn’t love, he never loved her when she was his and yet he was trying to own her as if she were a prize he had won.

His hand which had slithered in her soft curls, cruelly held her head in place and with her hands bound she couldn’t push him away.

Using as much strength as her body could muster she bit down long and hard on his lower lip, drawing blood and didn’t let go until she tasted that metallic texture in her mouth.

He abruptly shifted away from her, pressing his fingers on the bleeding lip. The anger so potent on his face.

"You bitch!" He backhanded her with such force that her face whirled in the other direction, her ruby-shaded hair scattered and covered her bruised face.

Clutching her neck, he squeezed, placing his right in the middle of her throat.

"Fall in line Skyla and I might go easy on you. Keep defying me and you will soon end up like that fucking whore in the corner. The choice is yours." he spewed, the rage lacing every word he said but there was regret too.

He had promised himself he would do better, that he wouldn’t hit her and yet her defiance always made him lose control. It’s what he always craved, to be in control, to have his way.

Skyla spat out the blood and saliva, the defiance so indomitable so undiluted in her eyes but she kept quiet. Instigating him more could mean putting her child in harm’s way and yet submitting to him was going to be such a challenge for her.

Seeing her stay quiet and not fight back anymore, Doran let go of her throat with a jerk and stepped away from her. He needed a break or he would end up hurting her worse. He knew she wouldn’t survive his torture in this condition and he didn’t want her dead under any circumstances.

He wanted to own and control her like one does to a doll, to make her look pretty and smile without saying a word or resisting him.

Turning away from her he checked the footage from the cameras on the monitors, ensuring no one was around. He turned the monitors off before exiting the room. Banging and locking the door behind him.

Skyla wiped her mouth with her shoulder and closed her eyes, leaning her head on the chair. She tried to repeat her breathing exercises, so much stress was not healthy for her baby. She was thinking of yelling her throat out for help but knew the room was most likely soundproof. freewēbnoveℓ.com

"You should listen to him, it will help with your survival." A meek voice from the corner had Skyla opening her eyes and glancing in that direction.

Curiosity bubbled in the pregnant girl and she couldn’t hold herself back.

"Who are you?"

The woman slightly straightened up, bringing her knees to her chest and hugging herself.

"Someone who wishes to die and rewrite her sins," she cryptically answered, her gaunt face had this haunting look about it as if she had been in his personal hell for far too long.

"How long have you been here?" Skyla questioned, unable to look away from the abused woman.

"I don’t know anymore, it’s been a while," she sighed, placing her injured cheek on her knee.

A while? How long was a while? Why was he punishing her? With Doran, nothing made much sense and Skyla only had hints about his initial life.

But could it be a shadow from his haunted past? Could it be her?

"My sins are too many. But what did you do to incur his wrath?" The woman mumbled, finding it difficult to even breathe, her feet shifted closer to herself and chains rattled on the ground. The sound so loud in the vicinity of the quiet room.

Skyla scoffed with a single dry laugh falling through her mouth. Fate enjoyed playing dirty with her.

What wrong had Skyla ever done to this man, except maybe making the mistake of marrying him?

"I had the misfortune of becoming his wife and then divorcing him for his abusive tendencies. His delusional brain won’t let me go, even when I am happily married to someone else and is carrying his child as you can see." Skyla pointed to her belly, where her child seemed to be restlessly kicking her, understanding they were in a perilous situation.

The woman slightly lifted her head, an understanding passed on her dulled face, as she spoke revealing yellowed decaying teeth.

"That explains his bad mood lately. He has been extra violent with me," she slowly sighed, dragging deep breaths as if trying to get extra oxygen in her lungs. It was a laborious task to breathe considering her ribs had been bruised so many times. How was she even alive after everything he had put her through was beyond her imagination.

"I am sorry that he has been hurting you." Skyla didn’t know what else to say to the woman in shambles. It wasn’t her fault but guilt still plagued her. The thought of being in that woman’s shoes if she wasn’t rescued settled like a viper in the pit of her stomach, injecting her with its poison again and again.

"It’s my own doing, it’s not your fault." The hollow words burst through her chapped lips, embedded in her pain and embroiled in her regrets. Skyla could see it in her lifeless eyes, she had lost the will to live.

The realisation hit her that she knew nothing about the kind of man she had married. How naive she had been.

The clicking sound of the door unlocking diverted Skyla’s attention as it slowly opened to reveal the plastic blonde she hated with all of her heart.

Karen leisurely strolled towards her as if she was in a park. Taking her time, making deliberate clicking sounds with her heels on the floor below as if to instigate Skyla.

Halting right in front of Skyla she bent down to face her with a devious grin.

"Well well, if it isn’t the mouthy princess. How the tables have turned, I am going to have so much fun destroying that pretty face of yours."
