Chapter 150: The News Spreads

Lawrence’s call in the middle of the night woke up Zyair. He rubbed his eyes and grabbed his phone. He had just gone to sleep amidst chaotic thoughts. Seeing it was Lawrence he knew it must be something urgent.

He received the call with a sleepy, "Hello!" freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

"It’s bad, the news got leaked somehow. It’s everywhere," Lawrence’s panicked voice came through the speaker and Zyair tensed, sitting up straight.

"What news?"

"Miss Skyla’s divorce news. She is being painted as a cheater and a gold digger by Doran’s fans. The news is circulating that she is having an affair with you," Lawrence informed him, annoyance very much evident in his voice.

Zyair’s whole world shook and all he could think of in that instant was Skyla. The desperate people were going to dig through her life and butcher her character. He threw back his blanket and instantly climbed out of bed.

"It’s that devil. Lawrence, exercise damage control and tell our social media and PR teams to bring down any such posts. This should not get out of hand. She will be devastated, already the daggers of divorce are hanging above her." freewёbnoνel.com

Zyair frantically paced the space of his room while passing instructions to Lawrence.

"I am already on it, just wanted to give you a heads-up. But remember we can’t close everyone’s mouth, tongues will wag. I will call Miss Huria as well to keep Miss Skyla away from Social media. She doesn’t deserve to see all this." Lawrence ended the call after that leaving Zyair in a perpetual agonised state.

He wanted to go right over to her but knew all his moves would be monitored now that the cat was out of the bag.

Sylvia had earlier visited him and sternly told him to keep his distance from Skyla. No calls, no texts, no emails, no visiting each other, no contact of any kind, no mentioning her on the phone with anyone else too.

He was still reeling from the after-effects of not being able to see her again for who knew how long and now this. Her words had left this never-filling hole inside his chest and it ached worse with every passing second.

Grabbing his shirt he put it on and left his room. The confined space was suffocating him and he needed to get out.

This was atrocious. He walked out into the garden and slumped down on a garden chair.

Bitu sensed his agitation and flew to him, perching on his broad shoulder, it began to nibble on Zyair’s ear as if trying to calm him down.

Zyair had clicked open Skyla’s picture and was staring at her innocent happy face. How long was her suffering going to be prolonged?

"Pretty!" Bitu chirped excitedly, seeing Skyla’s picture from Zyair’s shoulder.

"Yeah, and I can’t even protect her, can’t see her, can’t even touch her." He sighed and the pain in his heart intensified as if a dagger was being slowly poked in it.

Bitu rubbed his beak on Zyair’s face, showing his affection. Zyair rubbed his head slowly.

"Thanks, Bitu. Let’s hope we can control the damage before it gets out of hand."

Zyair scrolled through his phone, took out a number and hit the dial. The number he used only for emergencies.

The next morning was not a pretty one for Skyla. She woke up to Huria talking in a hushed voice with someone on the phone. She tried to search for her own but couldn’t find it anywhere.

Putting Cuddles on the bed, Skyla took off her blanket and climbed down the bed. Wearing her slippers she wrapped her shawl around herself and stepped out of the room.

As soon as Huria saw her, she cut the call and focused her attention on her friend, putting a forced smile on her worried face and asked.

"Hey! You are up early. Are you hungry?"

"No, I can’t find my phone. Have you seen it?"

Huria’s face fell at Skyla’s question. Even her private number had been leaked and people had been spamming her phone with calls and texts. It was a good thing that the phone was silent and Huria confiscated it before Skyla could see all the nonsense people had been spewing about her.

"I have your phone, Skyla. Something happened so Lawrence and Sylvia called and didn’t want you to see it. Lawrence will bring a new SIM card for you but for now, you shouldn’t use your phone," Huria politely told her, taking her arm and guiding her to the sofa so both could sit down.

Skyla was still slightly drowsy and wondered what was wrong. Her first thoughts went to him and she panicked. She gripped Huria’s arm and asked in exasperation.

"What happened? Is Zyair alright?"

"He is. It’s a backlash from that ass face. Don’t worry, we have it handled. Just trust me, ok?" Huria didn’t even want to take his name.

"Oh! What did he do? Just tell me," Skyla inquired in a saddened tone, having a slight hint of the level Doran could fall to just to punish her for daring to take such a step. Her other hand clutched her pendant.

Huria only offered her a short version, sparing her any details of what was going on.

"Promise me you won’t scour the internet to see what’s going on?" Huria asked her friend. Her heart was breaking again and again for Skyla.

When would she be able to catch a break?

"OK, I will try to remain away from toxicity spreading on the internet," Skyla promised. Huria gladly hugged her and told her they would watch a lot of anime today. She cancelled her office and stayed home with Skyla.

Lawrence later arrived with a new SIM card for Skyla. It was registered under his mother’s name so no one would suspect or trace it. Sylvia spoke to the police and two policemen were also stationed outside their house in case anyone tried to do something funny.

But this was just the beginning of the hatred people were going to spew on Skyla. Until the trial began they continued to make her life difficult.
