Chapter 109: Through The Rain
The rain was coming down in full force and the streets were already getting flooded. They had to move quickly. His flat was not very far away from the company. So Zyair decided to take her there.
Opening the passenger door of the car Zyair helped her settle inside and once he ensured she was safely tucked in he walked to the driver’s seat and buckled in. Draping his coat at the back of his seat.
The engine of his black Audi purred to life and off they went. Skyla called her mother-in-law and informed her of the situation, she wouldn’t be able to make it back home and would stay at Huria’s.
"Be safe my dear and stay inside. This looks like a bad batch of rain," Amsilia warned with concern.
"I will."
Her cheeks blushed at the lie she told and her voice slightly shook. She hated lying. But Zyair had a small smile sprinkled on his handsome face.
Next, she called Huria.
"Hey! Birthday girl, are you home? Sorry, we couldn’t meet today," Skyla said with a hint of sadness.
"No worries, we will throw a blast on the weekend. I got in early. The weather report said it might flood. Where are you?" Huria asked.
"About that. We got late in the office and I can’t get home now. So, Mr. Zyair is taking me to his house which is nearby. If someone asks, I am at your place."
Silence followed Skyla’s words and then a shriek, Huria’s excited shriek. freeweɓnovel.cøm
"Really? Wow, you have to tell me everything. Of course, don’t worry, I got you covered. But, I am so excited," she screeched loudly again and Skyla slumped further in her seat.
Huria was so loud that Skyla was sure Zyair could hear her.
Zyair was barely holding back laughter, he indeed had heard Huria but he kept his focus on the driving, not showing any signs that he had heard. He was so good at deception.
"I will talk to you later," Skyla mumbled before quickly ending the call and shoving the phone into her purse.
She looked away and began staring outside the waterlogged road. Very few people were on the streets as the rain mercilessly plummeted down. The pitter-patter on the car created the beautiful music of nature. She placed her head on the cold glass and found herself tensing, there was this awkward silence that filled the vicinity.
"Are you alright?" His concerned voice had her turning her head in his direction and she nodded, not knowing what to say.
In the past few months, they had become so open with each other. Cracking jokes, enjoying each other’s company and teasing each other, especially whenever a female tried advances towards Zyair. But today’s events had created this awkwardness which Skyla was unsure how to overcome.
Now that the initial shock was wearing off, all the embarrassing stuff she had done and said to him began to resurface. She wanted the earth to open up and gobble her.
"Don’t turn me into a stranger, Skyla. We have been making good progress. Don’t go on and push me back," he desperately asked while carefully trying to manoeuvre the car through rain and water.
His hands tightly clutched the steering wheel, the blue veins like streams popping out on his skin, while the white of his knuckles became too prominent.
She gulped and tore her eyes away from his hand. Those hands had already done some very forbidden acts to her and she was trying to not think of that night again.
"I don’t know what to do right now. I need time to process all this," she truthfully answered.
He didn’t mind in the slightest. He would give her all the time she needed as long as she made the right choice of divorcing the demon who had been leeching away her happiness for the past nine years.
Zyair was a patient man after all. Although that patience had stumbled and disappeared in thin air today.
"You can take as much time as you want," he said calmly but his insides were anything but calm, they were as turbulent as the storm raging outside.
And only half a mile away from home the car’s engine became waterlogged. It sputtered and made some strange noises before halting to a stop. Zyair cursed in his head. He knew he should have used his motorbike but then Skyla would have gotten wet and he couldn’t afford to make her sick.
He tried to restart it but it wouldn’t budge. Zyair knew it was of no use.
Skyla seemed slightly panicked seeing the car had halted to a stop in the middle of the street with water surrounding them.
"What’s wrong?" She asked with a slight tremble in her voice while turning to face him.
"The car’s engine is flooded. We will have to walk the rest of the way," he answered while unbuckling his seatbelt and leaning in to do the same for Skyla. He then took out his wallet and phone and handed it to her.
"Can you keep them in your bag?" He had noticed she had a leather handbag and it meant the rainwater wouldn’t seep in.
"Sure!" She took them and carefully placed them inside her bag, zipping it close.
Zyair grabbed his coat from the back of the seat and bent nearer to Skyla, wrapping it around her to keep her from getting wet as much as possible.
Her heart played like a musical instrument, creating the music of her admiration for this man.
How meticulously caring he was. Thinking of even minute details.
"We will get wet but I will get you home safely. So don’t be startled, I know you are a brave girl, hang in there," his soft caress had her quickly nodding.
Zyair then took out the keys and opened the door. A spray of water and torrenting rain welcomed him as he stepped out and quickly closed the door behind him. He waddled through the running water, wetting his shoes and clothes to get to the other side and opened the door for Skyla.
She had worn the bag around her neck and wrapped his coat which smelled like a fresh sea breeze around herself like a comforter. She couldn’t help but take strong whiffs.
Skyla was now ready to step out into the water when he gently spoke.
"Wait!"
Leaning inside he slid one arm under her knees and the other around her back. Skyla seemed a bit apprehensive and taken aback.
’What was he doing?’ She wondered to herself.
Taking extra care that her head wouldn’t hit the car door he picked her up, bridal style and had her flush against his toned chest in no time.
Skyla’s breath was knocked out at his action as she gaped at him in utter bewilderment. The waves of his affection were drowning her as she tried to wriggle out of his hold. This was the mother of embarrassment.
"I—I can walk," the words merely stumbled out of her mouth as she turned into a tomato, a cute tomato.
Zyair closed the door of the car with his foot and focused his attention on the gorgeous woman in his arms. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"Now that will not be very gentlemanly of me if I will make a lady walk through this dirty and cold water. I am carrying you," he amusedly watched her as the rain wet his hair and drops from them trickled and fell on Skyla’s face.
"Put your arms around my neck and your face turned towards me or rain will be directly in it," he instructed with a wicked smile, enjoying a hundred shades of scarlet on her cute little face.
