Chapter 38: 38: Girls! You are the real heroes!!

Our fathers were our models for God. If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God?

~ Tyler Durden (We do not talk about it xD)

Cate stood close by, her voice shaking. Jordan stood next to her, legs starting to give out.

"Jordan?"

Cate reached out and grabbed them. In female form, tears poured down Jordan’s face uncontrollably.

"This... is so fucking magnificent!"

"Cate, I want The Guardian!"

Cate Dunlap: "???"

...

The beams kept going for several minutes before Hillel finally cut the power. He hovered slowly at the edge of the massive crater.

His cold figure stood with his back to the endless desert, cape flapping in the wind, the big V emblem shining.

The setting sun hit him just right, making him look like a goddamn god.

Hillel turned around slowly. The red glow in his eyes faded away. He looked straight at the camera and spoke calmly.

"Mission accomplished. Farid is dead and the terrorist base is completely wiped out." freeωebnovēl.c૦m

"I am The Guardian. I am not a partner of justice! I am justice itself!!"

...

Vought Tower.

Homelander’s face was nowhere near as calm as before.

Hillel had stolen the show way too hard this time. Homelander could already picture the hero’s welcome waiting for The Guardian back home.

Public approval would skyrocket past his own overnight. The spotlight on The Seven had been completely hijacked by one guy.

And he wasn’t even in The Seven!!

Starlight couldn’t get through to Hillel on the phone. When she got back to the office she saw the live feed of his Omega Beams turning the entire terrorist bunker into slag.

"Fuck Jesus!"

Annie January blurted out without thinking.

Edgar turned around and quietly bumped The Guardian’s internal threat rating from A up to SSS.

Everyone knew Homelander was only rated A.

Edgar’s female secretary pissed herself again.

She really deserved to die!

How the hell had she dared to boss The Guardian around?

...

Meanwhile.

The Pentagon.

Satellite footage was rushed straight to the National Security Advisor’s desk.

The video matched Vought’s live broadcast but the satellite view made it even more brutal, capturing the whole thing from start to finish.

Hillel’s stomp shattering the surface. The Omega Beams melting the entire underground city.

Deep inside the White House the President watched the same footage.

"Where the hell did the Middle East get nuclear weapons? Did the Russians smuggle them in illegally?"

"Sir, listen—"

"Quick, set up a press conference. We need to strongly condemn this!"

The Secretary of Defense’s throat felt dry. He swallowed hard before speaking. "Sir, that wasn’t a nuke. It was a supe."

The President: "???"

The look on the President’s face screamed "Are you fucking kidding me!"

"Was it Homelander from Vought? Get Edgar on the phone right now. What the hell is he playing at? I told him to kill Farid. I wanted it done quietly, not like this giant fucking spectacle!!"

The President was pissed.

What was Edgar trying to pull? Flexing on him?

Did the guy not want to stay in America anymore?

"Uh, Mr. President, you’ve got it wrong. It wasn’t Homelander who did this." The Secretary of Defense wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Not Homelander?" The President caught up a second later. "Did Vought release some new third-generation supes?"

"I... I’m not sure, but the one who caused all this is a supe called The Guardian."

The Secretary of Defense played the second half of the footage. On screen a black figure hovered at the edge of the massive crater.

He turned around slowly, red glow still burning in his eyes like two destructive stars.

"His destructive power..."

"According to initial estimates," the Secretary of Defense opened the report, "the energy output of this attack is more than thirty times that of a GBU-57 bunker buster bomb."

"The GBU-57 is our strongest conventional bunker buster. It can penetrate sixty meters of reinforced concrete."

"This guy used heat vision to go two hundred meters through solid rock and melted the entire underground space across a one-kilometer radius."

"With sustained output for several minutes. If he aimed this kind of power at a city—"

The Secretary of Defense didn’t finish the sentence, but everyone in the Situation Room got the message loud and clear.

The President leaned back in his chair.

"Get Edgar on the line."

...

On Hillel’s side.

A notification popped up on the panel.

Hillel looked at the panel.

One quick trip to the Middle East and he had bagged nearly fifty thousand Ability Points.

On the way back.

Cate Dunlap hugged Hillel’s arm tight, rubbing against it softly.

Jordan did the same in their female form.

But Hillel had zero interest.

Viltrumites liked strong women. Even a Thraxan queen would do. But there was no way they were into an intersex person.

"The Guardian," Jordan called out over the wind.

"Hmm?"

"I want to crash at your place tonight. Staying with Starlight works too."

Hillel’s face went full black lines. "Say one more word and I’ll drop you right here so you can turn to ash on the way down!"

Jordan shut up immediately.

Cate didn’t even dare bring it up. She was a supe, sure, but her body wasn’t nearly as tough as Jordan’s.

She would die!

She would definitely die!

One minute later.

Vought Tower rooftop helipad.

The three of them landed smoothly. Homelander was already waiting there. The second Hillel touched down Homelander grabbed his shoulders with fake enthusiasm.

"Haha, that was awesome, buddy, you completely stole the show today!"

Homelander was full of shit.

But he knew Hillel wasn’t someone he could easily push around, so he showed a certain level of respect.

Jealous as hell, but respectful.

"Homelander!! Even Homelander came to greet us personally!!!"

Jordan and Cate were losing their minds with excitement.

Their idol back in school had been The Seven. Seeing Homelander in person now had them hyped beyond words.

"Oh? The Guardian’s little helpers are actually my fans?" Homelander’s attention shifted back to the two of them.

"Yeah! We’re huge fans! Can we get a picture together? We haven’t even taken one with The Guardian yet!!"

Haven’t taken one with The Guardian yet?

Hearing that made Homelander’s jealousy ease up a lot.

Looks like even The Guardian doesn’t have universal appeal!

"Even though The Guardian is strong, the fact that you two had the guts to face a supe way stronger than you is already impressive!"

"You girls are the real heroes!"

"Because real heroes step up to the challenge!!"
