Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Jump, Ryan
Chapter 71: Jump, Ryan
"That’s it," Homelander said, crouching down to meet Ryan’s eyes. "Standing up here, looking down on the world—it feels pretty good, doesn’t it? That freedom of the wind whistling past your ears... isn’t it just like when I took you flying?" freēwēbηovel.c૦m
"Yeah, Dad."
"Ryan, your mother never took you flying, and she never brought you up here, did she?"
Ryan listened to his father and gave an honest nod. "Um... no. Mom’s afraid of heights. She won’t let me come to places like this."
Seeing Ryan’s agreement, Homelander smiled. "Exactly. That’s why boys need their fathers."
They stood on the roof, soaking in the warm sunset; from a distance, the scene looked remarkably peaceful and heartwarming. But it was time to teach Ryan how to use his powers. At this age, Ryan should already be capable of something, shouldn’t he?
In his mind, Homelander recalled his childhood in the freezing Vought laboratories, where researchers would repeatedly push him off high platforms or throw him into life-threatening situations just to test his limits. The lab had taught him one thing: instinct only awakens in the face of absolute desperation and terror. It was the only way of teaching he knew.
"Ryan." Homelander’s smile vanished. "I think it’s time. Are you ready?"
Ryan blinked. "Ready for what? Dad, are we playing a new game?"
Homelander pointed toward the lawn over six meters below. "Jump, Ryan."
The little guy looked down at the patch of green grass beneath them. Ryan was completely dumbfounded, instinctively taking a step back. "Dad... you’re not serious, are you? It’s too high. I’m not jumping!"
"Ryan, look at me." Homelander’s smile was still gentle, but it carried an unyielding weight. "You’re my son. You’ll definitely fly, just like me. It’s an instinct."
"I... I don’t want to jump..." Ryan shook his head.
"Take a deep breath, son." Homelander squatted down. "Close your eyes, and then bravely take that step forward. It’s that simple—it’ll happen in an instant. The second you leave the roof, your body will fly automatically. It’ll handle everything."
"But I don’t know how to fly!" Ryan said anxiously. His dad was a superhero with powers, but he didn’t have any.
"You’re going to love it, believe me, son," Homelander continued to coax him.
"I really don’t know how to fly, Dad..."
"You can do it! I promise you can! Just jump, and you’ll discover a whole new world! Trust me, okay?"
Ryan’s little mind raced, and he fired back another argument. "Dad! Please, don’t make me jump! I mean... even Grandpa can’t fly! Maybe I inherited it from Grandpa—maybe I just can’t fly at all!"
At that, Homelander paused. Actually, the kid had a goddamn point, didn’t he? What if Ryan really did take after Soldier Boy? But very quickly, Homelander shook his head. "No way. Since I can fly, that’s genetic evolution! As my son, you should be able to fly even higher and faster than me!"
Seeing that there was no reasoning with his father, Ryan fell into absolute despair. In an instant, Ryan pulled his phone out of his pocket, his fingers rapidly dialing one of the only two numbers in his contacts.
Seeing his son suddenly pull out his phone to make a call, Homelander blinked, asking curiously, "Who are you calling right now?"
Ring—ring—click. The call connected.
"Grandpa... it’s Ryan..." Ryan shouted into the phone.
At the word "Grandpa," Homelander’s brow twitched. Holy shit. The little brat actually learned how to tattle?
"Wait! Ryan! Hang up the phone right now!" Homelander started to panic. "This is father-son training, there’s no need to bother your grandfather... your grandfather hates flying, he’ll probably just yell at you..." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
Benjamin’s voice echoed from the other end. "Who is it?"
"Grandpa! Dad... Dad is trying to make me jump off a six-meter roof! He says I can fly..."
The air went silent. Homelander was starting to regret buying his son that phone. After a brief second of silence on the other end, Benjamin spoke.
"Isn’t it goddamn obvious?! Your old man can fly, so as his seed, you can definitely fly too! It’s just a goddamn roof! Take a deep breath and just fucking jump! Even if you can’t fly, you won’t get hurt—don’t be a goddamn pussy crying on the roof... it’s only six meters. You’d be fine from six hundred..."
Click. After finishing his rant, Benjamin hung up the phone with absolute finality.
Ryan stood there holding the phone, now emitting a dial tone, completely stunned. Standing nearby, Homelander saw that Soldier Boy hadn’t yelled at him but actually agreed; his panic evaporated instantly.
Homelander chuckled. "Did you hear that, Ryan? Even your grandfather thinks you should jump!" Homelander spread his arms excitedly.
Crrrash!
On the lawn below, the sound of a ceramic plate shattering echoed. Becca, who had just walked out of the kitchen with a plate of washed fruit, had witnessed this heart-stopping scene on the roof.
"Oh God... what—what are you doing?!" Becca’s fruit plate lay smashed on the ground, fruit rolling everywhere. Her face was deathly pale as she stared up at Homelander and Ryan on the edge of the roof. "Ryan! Don’t move! Homelander, you animal!! Get him down from there right now!!!"
