Chapter 59: Mother and Son
Silas drove through the gated community in deep thought, his mind still reeling from the meeting at the warehouse.
The folder from Violet sat on the passenger seat like a live bomb. He had chosen not to mention the three women or their cryptic warnings when he decided to confront his mother. Some truths were better tested first. fгeewebnovёl.com
The grand Vane family mansion loomed ahead, its lights warm against the night sky. He parked aggressively and marched up the marble steps. The butler opened the door before he could knock.
"Master Silas, your mother is in the drawing room."
Silas didn’t wait for further announcement. He strode through the familiar halls and pushed open the heavy lustre door.
Amelia Vane sat elegantly on a velvet chaise, a glass of red wine in hand, reading a book. She looked up, surprise flickering across her refined features before she composed herself with a warm smile.
"Silas, darling. What a surprise. You rarely visit without calling first." She set the book down. "Come, sit. Would you like some wine?"
Silas remained standing, his presence filling the room like a gathering storm. "I’m not here for pleasantries, Mother. I neef you to answer every one of my questions, not hiding a single word about it."
Amelia’s smile faltered slightly. She took a slow sip of wine. "Answers about what, exactly? You’re being very dramatic right now Silas, I’m already showered for my sleep you should be done with it."
Silas stepped closer, voice low and intense. "The ’home.’ What do you know about it? The real one. Not this mansion and the public story you have caved. What have you been hiding from me all these years?"
Amelia’s expression hardened. She set her glass down with deliberate calm. "I don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re tired, Silas. You should rest."
"Don’t lie to me," Silas snapped, his control fraying. "I know there’s more to our family than you’ve told me. The disappearance of Sylvain and Leon’s parents. You are also connected to what happened in Italy. You know the Rocco family and something about ’The Emperor.’ Tell me the truth. All of it."
Amelia rose slowly from the chaise, her posture regal and unyielding. "You have no right to demand anything from me, Silas. I raised you. I protected you. Some things are better left buried so has not to hurt past connections." fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
"Buried?" Silas’s voice rose. "People are dying because of these secrets! Leon has been kidnapped. Sylvain is breaking apart. And you stand there telling me to leave it alone? What are you hiding, Mother? What happened in that ’home’ you refuse to speak about?"
Amelia’s eyes flashed with rare steel. "Watch your tone with me, boy. I am still your mother. I have sacrificed everything to give you the life you have. You think you can barge in here and interrogate me like one of your employees?"
Amelia picked the glass up and took a sip to calm her nerves. She dropped it back and faced the angry Silas. "Also who are this people that are important to you? You had the guts to raise your voice against me."
Silas slammed his hand on the nearby table, making the wine glass jump. "This isn’t about respect anymore! Lives are at stake. My people are being targeted. If you know something about the Rocco family or why Sylvain’s parents disappeared, you will must tell me at this moment."
Amelia stepped forward, refusing to back down. "And what if I don’t? What then, Silas? Will you threaten your own mother? After everything I’ve done to shield you from the darkness of our family legacy?"
"Shield me?" Silas laughed bitterly. "Or shield yourself? Tell me the truth! What is the connection between our family and the Roccos? Why did you warn me about Diane and marriage so urgently? What are you afraid of?"
Amelia’s voice grew colder, matching his intensity. "You are not ready for those truths, Silas. You think you’re strong enough to handle it? You have no idea what kind of monsters are waiting in the shadows. I kept you away from that world for a reason. Drop this and focus on your business. Marry the lady I gave you and live the life I fought to give you."
Silas moved closer, towering over her. "I am not a child anymore. Stop treating me like one. If you don’t tell me, I will find out another way. And when I do, I won’t be so polite next time."
Amelia’s hand shot out and slapped him hard across the face. The sound echoed through the drawing room.
"How dare you speak to me like that?" she hissed, breathing heavily. "I carried you. I raised you alone after your father... after everything fell apart. You will not threaten me in my own house!"
Silas touched his cheek, eyes blazing with fury but also pain. "Then I have nothing more to say to you."
He turned sharply and stormed toward the door.
"Silas!" Amelia called after him, voice cracking for the first time. "Don’t walk away from me! You don’t understand what you’re digging into. It will destroy you!"
Silas paused at the doorway, back rigid. "I’m already destroyed, Mother. My very first love is about to lose his brother and you’re still playing games with secrets. If you won’t help me, then stay out of my way."
He yanked the door open and left without looking back.
Amelia stood alone in the drawing room, hand trembling as she reached for her wine glass. She took a long sip, but it did nothing to calm the storm in her eyes.
"Foolish boy..." she whispered. "You have no idea what you’re waking up."
Outside, Silas climbed back into his car and slammed the door shut. His knuckles were white on the steering wheel as he drove away from the mansion.
No matter what he will dig out his family dirty secret, that beast must be awakened in his family and he will do everything to find out who he is.
