Chapter 40: A Chat With Her

The alphas’ sight and hearing were sharp, and they noticed even quiet intruders.

Far away, by the shore, a group of strong alphas were hiding. By the time they were spotted, those few figures had already positioned themselves far away, blocking their escape route. Under the sea, a stronger figure was very close to the Kestrel and the others.

The Shanan Bay was a crescent-shaped gulf, and those figures were in the part of the bay that reached deepest into the sea. Their imposing presence was strong, all high-level alphas. Whether standing or crouching, their eyes shone coolly, ready to fight.

The sea mirrored the dark, silent shadows of the alphas’ psychic incarnations.

Soldiers from the outpost knew that the most dangerous things in the Polluted Zone were sometimes not monsters, but their own kind. Especially when they’ve found treasure, and others have noticed.

This was a land where with no morals. Other people’s lives was especially worthless in this lawless and wild place.

"They’re all skilled and well-armed," Tegnell whispered to Birdie, "They’re different from us, they may come from the Tower."

"Especially the one who’s underwater," Tegnell took off his coat, saying, "You watch the surface, I’ll go down and check."

Then he transformed into a powerful tiger and dove into the water.

Birdie held her gun tight, watching the people near the water. She was sure they were stronger. Their powerful vibe and advanced pulse guns showed it. Their weapons were much better than Birdie’s gun that needed reloading. They were from different times.

Everyone knew the Tower’s alpha were stronger than local soldiers. They had better resources and stronger weapons.

The people at the shore seemed far, but they were too fast to run away from.

Birdie’s sharp eyes saw their careless smiles, like they were making fun of her. They could probably see her fear, like she was facing a scary enemy. They might even see the sweat on her forehead.

Underwater, Muros was scared.

His senses were sharp underwater. He knew he was being watched. A big creature in the ocean was getting closer to him. It was silent and fast, like a ghost of the sea.

It was an alpha. Muros had met many strong alphas, but this one was stronger. The alpha’s leaking power was everywhere in the sea, and Muros felt too small to escape. For the first time, he felt so weak, and so unimportant.

What made it worse was that this alpha’s psychic incarnation was a natural enemy of seals. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

The sound of the orca, the alpha’s psychic incarnation, made Muros’ tail feel weak. It scared him a lot.

"I can’t escape. I’m being watched. Should I beg for mercy?" He thought he could see the big, dark figure.

Just then, someone’s murmurs went into his ears:

"It’s okay."

"Don’t be scared."

"Get to the ship."

Kestrel’s voice echoed in Muros’ mind again. It calmed him down.

Muros saw the bottom of a ship not far away. He saw someone coming down from the water to meet him. He used all his energy to swim to the surface.

Big tendrils appeared in the water around him. They protected him from the big shadow coming from underwater.

Muros didn’t know where these tendrils s came from. They were strange and odd creatures, but they made him feel safe. It was like they were his friends.

Muros jumped out of the water and into his friends’ boat. Kestrel gave him a blanket. He wrapped himself in it, turning back into a human.

He stuck his head out from under the blanket. Seeing his friends with their weapons and Kestrel’s calm face, he felt a little better, and stopped shaking.

Kestrel’s shared vision had ended. But Muros was still looking for her.

Kestrel was at the ship’s wheel, looking into the water. It was like she knew about the big creature in the dark water. But she didn’t seem scared, just a bit curious.

Muros felt better now and started to understand what happened.

He realized that the tendrils that protected him were Kestrel’s psychic incarnations. This was the first time he saw that betas could have strong psychic incarnations that could comfort others. He thought betas only had small and cute creatures before.

But he thought Kestrel’s psychic incarnations were small and cute too, just bigger.

Muros had seen many ads and movies about betas from the Empire. He knew beta’s psychic incarnations could calm alphas, but they weren’t good at fighting.

He was an alpha from the Empire and was always told that it was his job to protect betas, who tended to be weaker. But today, a beta from the Tower had protected him.

Thinking about how scared he was in the sea made Muros, a proud boy, feel embarrassed. But he had to admit that when he was scared of the strong alpha, the big tendrils really helped him.

The way they acted towards the enemy in the water made him feel safer and better.

He felt so lucky that the orca eventually stopped. Muros was still curious: "Why did the strong orca stop and not attack us?"

...

Underwater, the light from the stars went through the water and landed on the orca’s black back.

Ren, who was diving, saw a small psychic incarnation of a seal. It was just a boy around fifteen, not a full-grown alpha. Even though he was far away, Ren could sense him well underwater.

Without any effort, he could see the boy holding a wooden box, coming out of a shipwreck, and happily swimming to the surface with his big seal flippers.

"Kill him and get what Mr. Chow wants," Jax’s voice said through the diving headset. "We’ll handle his friends for you."

Things were getting a bit hard to handle for Ren, because the box the boy had might be what Cass wanted them to find.

The Mary shipwreck had been found in Polluted Zone Five. It seemed like the old ship, which had been under the sea for many years, had been completely searched by explorers.

But the valuable thing it had, a box of rare, ancient energy stones, had not been found. It was hidden in a secret place in the captain’s quarters. Only a few high-ups at the Tower knew this, while none of them wanted to tell the royals about that. Everyone wanted to secretly keep these rare treasures for themselves.

After the Earl’s death, Cass was keen to get the object in the box to win over his new supporters. He sent some of his best fighters on this mission.

Sadly, someone else got to the treasure first, but luckily, they hadn’t escaped yet.

Ren knew the world wasn’t fair, and he had grown used to this. He was no longer the passionate and rash young man from school. But he wouldn’t cross some lines, like killing a boy to help Cass rise in power. He planned to just scare the boy and make him give up the box.

Just as Ren was moving closer, the scared little seal seemed to stir the water. In the water’s movement, Ren felt something familiar that gave him a chill.

Tendrils rose from the deep water like dark flowers blooming, or like the arms of spirits coming out from their hidden world.

The big tendrils moved to protect the scared seal, warning Ren.

"Is it her? That beta?" Ren stopped in the water.

This was too much of a coincidence. Just two days ago, they fought the mutants shoulder to shoulder in the sky. Now, the tendrils that had once protected him were guarding another alpha. They pointed at him, ready to attack.

It wasn’t rare for Ren to see allies turn into enemies. Jax had once been his ally, but now Jax planned to kill him. Ren didn’t feel much about this, except for a bit of disgust.

Moreover, Ren didn’t think he had a strong connection with the beta. They hadn’t even had a full conversation.

But when those tendrils spread out on the ocean floor and pointed at him like he was an enemy, Ren felt a bit sad. It was like a soft spot in his heart was hurt by the sharp tendrils, and it didn’t feel good. He thought he didn’t have such soft spots left.

"If I have to face you, what can you do?" Ren narrowed his eyes, feeling a strange anger. He didn’t even know why he would be angry, but he couldn’t control his feelings. A spot on the back of his hand started to itch.

"If it’s with that beta..." he realized that if he kept this up, those tendrils might smack him, like last time, but it might not just be a slap on the hand this time.

Ren stopped moving forward. Half of him turned into a human and swam up to the surface, showing his head above the water.

On the moving sea, he saw the beta he was familiar with. She was on a small boat under the starry sky, not far from him. Several alphas closely guarded her. She looked surprised as she seemed to notice him just then.
