Chapter 95: Ball Dance

"My dear students."

Everyone in the hall was quiet when Lucio Graymen began to talk.

Contrary to his colleagues, he wore his typical attire for today. The white uniform, decorated with the five star-like badges, and a long golden robe, reached to his knees.

And as usual, he talked with a smile on his face and with closed eyes.

"I welcome everyone, who came to join us on this wonderful occasion!"

He spread his arms wide as he spoke loud and clearly.

"Today marks the start of Loogam’s yearly tournament week! And as the academy’s headmaster, I cannot wait to see, how much you all grew in the past three months! So starting tomorrow, show me and everyone else your skills, that you have learned, and impress us! Show us that we were wrong with our initial evaluation! Show us that you are worthy of getting promoted!"

His voice became more vigorous, drawing the students’s attention even further.

"The moment you set foot on this grounds as a student, you took the first step towards your dreams! For some, it’s the first step into becoming a future legendary mage! A legendary adventurer! A hero! Someone, whose name, will be engraved in the history books!"

The students’ eyes were sparkling.

Their energy and motivation were given a push from the back.

"Now it’s time for the next step!"

Lucio pumped his fist in front of his face.

"Can I take that step? How many steps do I have to go before I reach my goal? Will I even reach my goal?"

"Nobody can answer those questions except for you."

"Think deeply about that and demonstrate your answer to us in the tournament! Demonstrate your willpower!"

The moment he stretched the fist to the crowd, the crowd went wild.

The people clapped their hands and cheered loudly for the headmaster.

"Impressive."

That was the only comment Mika could give as he clapped his hands with a stunned expression on his face.

[Words befitting of a leader.]

The hall was illuminated again.

"But for now, let loose and enjoy the ball." Lucio ended his speech in a rather calm demeanor.

A group of people descended, who neither seemed like students nor teachers, judging from their looks and ages.

However, they all had an instrument in their hands.

As Lucio walked over to the other teachers, the people started to play.

The students started to make a circle around the center of the hall.

A few pairs entered the vast space hand in hand.

"A dance floor, huh?" Lily muttered.

"..."

Mika, who stood beside her, looked at her side profile.

"Lily, may I-"

"Want to dance?" Mika cut off Cail.

[Is this how you ask a lady for a dance?]

"Huh?"

Lily faced Mika.

Her cheeks were slightly red.

She smiled.

"Sure!" she agreed happily.

"What?!"

Cail was bewildered.

Mika smiled as well as he reached his hand to her. At the same time, he threw a provoking side glance at Cail.

"You damn-"

"Ugh...!"

However, he forgot something, when he heard his rustling chains.

"Hey, how many times do I have to remind you that we’re chained together?!" Lisa remarked annoyed as she was dragged to them.

"Oh, right, I-"

"What about me? I want to dance with you, too, Mika!" Rachel meddled in, still clinging to his left arm.

"Rachel, calm down, okay...? We can dance later." Mika answered, trying to comfort Rachel.

"Fine..."

She crossed her arms while averting her face from him.

"Rachel."

"?"

Belian called her out.

"Can we talk for a moment?"

Harik was standing right beside him.

"It’s a promise, okay?" Rachel told Mika firmly before she walked over to Belian and Harik.

Mika looked in the direction of the three white-class students.

"Now then... How should we handle this situation...?"

He turned back to Lily and Lisa.

In his mind, he played out the thought of dancing with Lily. However, what about Lisa? Would it not be odd if he danced with Lily, while Lisa was always at his side without a dance partner?

He shook his head.

"My name is Sylvia Pyril. May I ask you for a dance, Lisa?"

Sylvia appeared and asked Lisa, bowing politely while retaining her smile.

"H-huh? What? M-me?"

Lisa reacted bashfully, not expecting this to happen.

"Hello! I haven’t introduced myself yet, right? I’m Lily Hayth. Nice to meet you!"

Lily stretched her hand out to Lisa.

"N-nice to meet you..."

She took her hand nervously.

"Can I make a suggestion?" Lily asked Mika.

"Sure."

"Then, how about we dance together?" she suggested to everyone.

"Huh?"

The other three had question marks above their heads.

"Shouldn’t it be fine? As long as Lisa and Mika face each other with their backs, there won’t be a problem, right?" Lily elaborated.

"I suppose not, but-"

"Then, it’s settled!"

With a big smile on her face, she dragged Mika, Sylvia and Lisa to the dance floor.

"W-what about me...?"

Cail, who was left behind, stared stunned at those, who just left for the dance floor.

"Sir Cail!"

"We finally found you!"

"Shall we dance?"

"..."

His stunned expression turned into a disappointed one as his usual male companions approached him.

"Sure..." he replied defeated.

Thus, more and more pairs stepped into the middle.

Lily grabbed Mika’s shoulder and with the other hand, she took his hand.

"..."

Mika began to blush.

"Hm? Is it your first time dancing?" she asked.

"U-unfortunately, yes..." he replied embarrassed.

"Hehe, I see. Don’t worry, I will show you the steps!" Lily reassured him.

The hand, which rested on his shoulder, slid over to his other free hand. She led his hand to her back.

Mika’s face reddened even more, whereas Lily seemed unfazed by the physical contact.

"Just what the hell are you doing, Mika?" Lisa complained with a still stern look.

Just like suggested, Lisa and Mika faced each other with their backs.

Lisa’s dance partner was Sylvia, who was already in the dancing position.

"L-leave me be, okay?!"

Then, the four started to move.

"Just follow my leads, okay?" Lily said softly.

"Yes..."

He paid a lot of attention to his and her feet, scared to accidentally step on her.

"No need to be so uptight. Relax a little, hehe." she giggled as she gave advice.

"..."

"Yes, move just like that! You’re a quick learner, huh?"

"D-don’t treat me like a child..." Mika remarked embarrassed.

[Then, don’t move like a child.]

"You little..." he muttered vexed.

"Did you say something?" Lily wondered.

Mika lifted his head up.

"!"

He noticed how his face got warmer.

"Mika?"

He realized just in that moment, how close they stood to each other.

It was also the moment, he noticed her beauty.

"N-nothing!"

"Hmmm? Really!" Lily teased him with a playful grin as she leaned closer to him.

"..."

He gritted his teeth.

"It’s just..."

"Hmmm?"

She kept teasing him.

"It’s just that you look great today..." Mika admitted with averting eyes.

His face heated up a lot more.

But not only his.

"..."

Lily was also taken aback.

"I-i-i-is that s-so...?"

Steam emerged from their heads.

"H-h-hey, Lisa... Can we s-switch...?"

"Huh? Sure, but why a- Woah!"

In one swift movement, Lily managed to spin Mika around and managed to take Sylvia’s hands.

"Wow, you’re literally burning, Lily."

"S-sshhh!"

Lily urged Sylvia to stay quiet.

"..."

"..."

Meanwhile, Lisa and Mika had to look at each other.

"W-why are you blushing?" Lisa asked Mika, who was still embarrassed by what he previously said. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

"I-I could say the same to you, though..."

Not wanting to stand out in the crowd, the two began to dance slowly.

This time, Mika did not need anyone to lead him.

"Well, it’s... How should I say..." Lisa muttered with her gaze cast down.

"?"

Mika tilted his head.

"T-this is my first time actually being this close to a boy." she admitted shyly.

"What, really?"

Mika was baffled.

"W-what? You want to say something?" she said annoyed as if Mika was ridiculing her.

"N-no, I was just surprised... After all, I thought that someone as cool and beautiful as you would have experience with the other gender..." Mika explained genuinely surprised.

"..."

Her mouth and eyes widened.

She was red from one ear to the other.

"Switch!" she shouted before she vigorously swapped places with Sylvia.

Lisa took deep breaths.

"A-are you, okay, Lisa...?" Lily asked taken aback.

Now, Sylvia and Mika were partners.

"You really are a lady killer, aren’t you?" Sylvia remarked with a teasing smirk.

"The heck are you talking about?"

They resumed the dance.

But while they danced, Sylvia stared at his face intensively.

"What now?" he asked tiredly.

"Nothing. I was wondering why you aren’t acting all embarrassed with me."

"Huh? And why should I?"

"When you danced with the other two, you were pretty nervous, right?"

"Hmm... I guess so."

"Is it because I’m not charming? Oh, poor me." she acted heartbroken.

"Nonsense. I find you pretty charming."

"Hm?"

She stopped acting.

"Jeez..."

Mika heaved a sigh.

"I don’t know why but I feel the most relaxed around you." he stated reluctantly.

"..."

"Sylv-"

"G-give a minute, o-okay...?"

She shifted her face to the other side.

Due to her head’s rising temperature, she started sweating.

"Didn’t expect that sneak attack..." she muttered.

"What’s wrong with all of you today- Hrngh!"

Sylvia deliberately stepped on his foot.

In the meantime, Belian was outside the hall.

"So he actually cured her, huh...?" he muttered as he stared with a satisfied expression at the starry sky.

However, his eyes wandered down again, when he noticed a person.

"Isn’t that Xander...?"

He squinted his eyes.

The person, who appeared to him as Xander, walked in the direction of the tournament’s arena, which was built just for the tournament.

"What is he doing at this hour...?"

Belian turned his back and was about to walk inside the building.

"I guess, he’s just patrolling the grounds again. After all, it’s the night before the tournament starts."

It was only a few days later when he came to deeply regret his decision.

He would lament himself for not approaching him.

If he did, then maybe...

Just maybe, the incoming tragedy could have been prevented.
