Chapter 68: The Leaders’ Apology
The next morning.
The sun was already up and shining brightly in the flower garden, which was surrounded by the mansion.
A crowd was gathering itself there. Amongst them were mostly butlers and maids working in the mansion.
Mika was also there, doing some stretches.
[I must admit, challenging someone who just woke up from a month-long sleep seems harsh.]
"Yeah... And I still can’t believe that I was asleep for an entire month..." Mika replied baffled.
A lot of things must have happened in that span of time. Olivia was briefing him about the things he wanted to know the most, but there were obviously still some questions left to answer.
However, for now, it was enough for him to know that Zack and the others were alive and that Gerard and the rest of his team returned to Loogam.
"Still, this yard is pretty spacious, huh? I was told that this was the queen’s main residence in Rostanta’s capital, Fuera, but I-"
"Yo, you’re finally awake, huh?"
"?"
The one greeting Mika in a relaxing manner was Zack. He wore grey pants and a black shirt, which was not fully buttoned and whose sleeves were rolled up.
"Mr. Yorn!"
Mika smiled.
"Are you fine?" he asked.
"Haha, of course I am! But shouldn’t I be the one asking you that? After all, you were the one sleeping like a log for eternity." Zack responded joyfully.
"Yeah, he’s right! We were really worried, you know?"
It was the petite Wendy who joined them.
"Ms. Relaren!"
"I’m glad you’re fine now!" she said with a beaming smile.
Zack was looking around.
"Are you perhaps here to watch the fight?" Mika asked Zack.
Words about the match between Mika and Olivia spread like wildfire.
"Well... How should we say..." Wendy was looking nervously for the right words.
"It’s true that we were curious about the fight, however, we came here because we heard that you woke up."
Suddenly, Zack bowed his upper body.
"M-Mr. Yorn?"
Wendy followed suit.
"We were supposed to lead the squad, however, we showed you and everyone else a sorry display of our leadership and skills. Even though we should have been one of the nation’s strongest, we were more of a hindrance than a help." Zack stated in a serious tone.
"This won’t bring back the dead and we don’t look to be forgiven, but we will still at least offer you our deepest apologies." Wendy added.
"..."
Mika was stunned by them.
"You can raise your heads."
Mika also sounded sterner than usual.
On his words, the two lifted their heads.
"..."
The two stared at Mika.
Then, he sighed.
"I’m sorry but I’m bad at those kinds of things..."
Mika awkwardly scratched the back of his head.
He never would have thought that a day would come when high-ranking people would bow and apologize to him.
"But I truly appreciate your honesty! And I think that our fallen comrades will gladly forgive you, too. I mean, they put their trust into you." he said, averting his eyes from them.
"But... But we betrayed their trust by letting them die..." Wendy muttered bitterly.
"And they will still keep trusting you, even in the afterlife. After all, they will trust you that you will keep moving forward from this and make greater efforts in order to prevent this from ever happening again." Mika added kindly.
"..."
"..."
Zack and Wendy were now also stunned.
"Haha..."
However, Zack started to burst into laughter.
"So basically you’re telling us that we should learn from our mistake, right?" he asked while laughing.
He stretched his fist out to Mika.
"I, Zack Yorn, will swear that I will train even harder. I will become someone, who won’t let his comrades die again. Not even in the face of a demon!" he declared with a determined smile.
"And I, Wendy Relaren, will also learn from this mission and strive for greater heights!" she said with her hand on her chest.
In response, Mika only nodded satisfied.
The three smiled at each other after Wendy and Zack resolved themselves.
"I like you, kid! If you ever come to Rostanta again, you should definitely visit my home! I want you to introduce me to my lovely wife and cute daughter!" Zack suggested as he slapped Mika’s back.
"Y-you have a family?"
"Haha, yes! Does it surprise you? I’ve been married for eight years and have a two-year-old daughter. You have to see her once! She’s such an angel!" Zack replied proudly.
"You won’t believe it, but this muscle-head is married to one of the queen’s cousins. I’m shivering imagining how strong their daughter will become..." Wendy said jokingly.
Meanwhile, Mika had a faint smile as he heard them talking.
But Wendy suddenly cleared her throat loudly.
"Before you will be bedridden for the rest of the day, there’s still some piece of information that we wanted to share with you."
"?"
"We’ve found Ray Taker’s corpse." Zack cut in with a stern expression.
"His body was found in his home, which is located in a city near the border." he elaborated.
"And after reading the latest report today, we have now a better understanding of this demon called Yater." Wendy said.
"From the day, we formed this rescue squad, he was already impersonating Ray Taker. Meaning that he plotted the later events early on. Since the beginning, we were just dancing on his, or rather their palms while they watched us struggle and despair. We’re just a form of entertainment for them..." Wendy continued with a hint of contempt.
"We also suspect that he caused the night attack when we camped. He must have killed Carl deep in the forest and summoned those monsters to attack us. He was most likely trying to test us." Zack took over explaining.
"Or he just wanted to fool around." Wendy pondered.
Mika noticed Zack’s fists, whose veins were almost bursting, trembling.
"Those damned demons..."
At that moment, the chatter around them turned louder.
Mika turned around to see what the commotion was all about, only to see the crowd politely bowing and creating a path for a certain person to walk.
[There she is.]
Walking elegantly over to Mika with a wide grin on her face was Olivia Rostanta, Rostanta’s queen.
Unlike during the battle against Yater, she did not wear her white robe and crown this time.
"We’ll step back for now. Good luck with surviving!" Wendy said with an innocent smile.
Zack leaned on to Mika’s ear. He started to whisper.
"Nobody will hold it against you if you pull back now, you know?"
Mika began to break into a cold sweat, while he smiled nervously.
"I don’t know if she told you this, but she’s also the cap-"
"Enough with the chitchat! Let’s start! I can’t wait any longer!" Olivia interrupted them.
Despite growing impatient, she did not stop smirking.
"Yes, my queen."
Zack silently and submissively pulled back.
"I’m glad to see that you didn’t run away from the fight."
"W-well, there’s no way that I could betray your Highness’ expectation, can I?" Mika responded still feeling nervous.
"Haha! Then, let’s not waste more time! Wendy! Zack!"
On her signal, Zack, whose eyes turned grey, created a large iron platform over the yard.
Wendy used her wind magic to keep it afloat above the yard. In addition, she summoned gentle gales to levitate the people present.
The people getting lifted up by her magic seemed used to it and made it comfortable for themselves on the gales. It was as if they were sitting in the stands of an arena.
[As you have most likely ignored this notification yesterday, I will repeat it on your behalf.]
"Hm?"
[Starting from now on, there is no further need to hide your powers anymore.]
"!" ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Mika widened his eyes.
"A-are you serious?!"
After so long, Mika could finally bid farewell to the act of an oblivious guy.
[Yes.]
"Yes! Finally!"
Mika stretched his hands into the air as he celebrated.
[In the end, the outcome will not change. It will all lead to the Promised Future.]
However, Mika did not listen anymore. He was more invested in jumping for joy.
"What happened all of a sudden?" Olivia asked with her everlasting smile.
"I deeply apologize, your Highness!"
His eyes brimmed with determination as he drew his rusty sword.
"?"
"I didn’t tell you the whole truth when you questioned me about my encounter with the demon."
Mika’s hair slowly changed its color.
"I didn’t run away."
His eyes also appeared to change.
"I was fighting him."
A shiny circle formed over his head.
"And I will show you how!" Mika declared cockily as Excalibur transformed into its true shape.
Taking on the same form he had while facing Yater, his confidence reached new heights like never before.
"..."
"!"
However, said confidence faded quickly.
"I was expecting myself to hold back against you, but I guess I won’t be able to..."
Olivia’s smile widened in excitement. Her sharp eyes seemed like those of a predator. And the aura she was emitting was different.
"..."
Instinctively, Mika took a few steps back.
He instantly sensed that she was different.
Compared to her now, Yater, who impersonated a part of the Demon King, was like a mere warm-up.
