Chapter 205: Sea Floor
On the first floor, the Sea Floor.
The sky gradually turned darker. And soon, it started to roar loudly.
"Tch... Of all things, I have to end up with him..." Asak muttered spitefully.
He was standing away from Harik, who was near the water and analyzing their surroundings.
According to the people, who previously cleared the first floor, the dungeon boss would eventually come out on its own, which was strange for a floor boss. Usually, one would have to follow a certain path or do certain things in order to confront the boss but this time, Harik and Asak could only sit back and wait for the boss to approach them first.
Thus, the two waited and waited until the sky was completely grey.
A storm was brewing from afar.
"..."
"..."
And yet, there were no signs of the floor boss.
Asak and Harik sat down on the small and sandy island. But they were still on non-speaking terms with each other. Since the match between their academies, they had no chance to talk it out yet. Neither could Harik approach him nor could Asak voice out his true thoughts.
However, Harik finally mustered up the courage to take the first step.
"Asa-"
"It’s coming." Asak cut Harik off, looking sternly at the water.
Right in their field of vision, the water started to move strangely.
And slowly, a creature emerged from underwater, walking casually towards the two.
"!"
Harik readied himself for battle whereas Asak squinted his eyes at the monster.
Just like the reports stated, it was a blue fishman.
It had the size of an average male adult with a resembling body structure of a toned human. But it had fish scales instead of a normal human skin. There were gills on the sides of its big fish head. And it had buff arms and legs. Its feet and hands were webbed like a frog’s.
But the thing that caught their eyes the most was the golden trident in its hand.
Showing off its skills, it whirled the trident above its head and behind its back before it took up its fighting stance and pointed the weapon at them.
"Let’s see what you’re capable of..." Asak murmured sternly.
He started things off by launching a few wind slashes at it, which it blocked off without any problems with its trident.
"Heh..."
Suddenly smirking, Asak summoned a small whirlwind beneath its feet.
It jumped to the front, just like Asak wanted it.
Asak jumped to it as well with his leg engulfed in strong wind.
The fish-like monster held up its trident and managed to block Asak’s strong kick, which still pushed it far away.
"This may be easier than I thought...!" Asak said confidently after kicking the monster back into the water.
"..."
Harik still stood there, doing nothing. Nervously, he was watching the enemy’s behavior.
"Hm?"
Asak’s grin faded away when the monster jumped out of the water, attempting to stab him with the trident.
Effortlessly, Asak dodged the attack.
And when it passed by Asak, it had to switch back to defense as Asak launched a barrage of kicks.
"Got you now!"
Asak managed to stick its trident to the ground by shifting it with his leg in one fellow swoop. After that, he immediately turned his back on it and landed a heel kick on its temple.
As a result, it stumbled a little to the back, holding its head.
"Hehe...!" Asak laughed with a wide grin as he charged at it again.
"Watch out!"
"?"
However, he completely neglected his back and the fact that the monster could manipulate water as well.
Behind him, water from the sea got up like a wave and was formed into a spear before it was targeting Asak’s back.
"Shit...!"
Fortunately, Harik stepped in and countered the spear with the same attack as a fellow person, who could use water.
Due to the collision, water sprayed down on all of them like rain.
"Hey, get your act together!"
Just that one mistake and moment were enough to shake up Asak and distract him from his surroundings.
Because he turned his head to the back, he, in turn, lost focus on the actual enemy, who dashed towards him.
"!"
And just in time, before the monster could stab him, Harik grabbed Asak’s shoulder and threw him to the side.
"Keh...!" Harik groaned faintly.
He had to bend his head strongly to the side in order to evade the monster’s thrust with its trident, which was originally aimed at Asak.
The monster distanced himself a little from Harik before it began to launch multiple thrusts nonstop.
"..."
Stunned, Asak watched Harik trying his best to dodge every single attack.
However, every attack left a small scratch on his body as he was not fast enough yet.
"Why...?" Asak muttered.
Harik saved him from the monster’s attack.
"Why did you help me...?"
Asak remembered their time as kids.
Back then, he considered themselves best friends. Until the day, when Harik’s appearance changed that to a demon.
The whole city learned about it and shunned him for that. And seeing everyone’s reaction, not only the adults’ but also the reaction of his peers, Asak felt conflicted. His best friend was in trouble.
Of course, there was a part of him that wanted to help, however, his instincts told him not to. Instead, he followed everyone else’s behavior and berated him.
In other words, he was scared to be a victim, too. He was scared to be treated the same way as Harik just for doing the right thing as a friend. But the question of what was right and the regret he felt since that incident tore him up inside, making him stray off the righteous path in his adolescence, which lastly made him become a part of Payl’s small group.
"!"
Tremblingly and with widened eyes, Asak saw how Harik was in trouble once again.
"Argh...!"
The trident pierced right through the side of Harik’s stomach.
"Asak!" Harik shouted with all his might.
He grabbed the trident tightly so that the monster could not pull it out anymore.
"..."
Asak was still standing there.
"Tch...!"
Blood came out of his mouth as Harik kicked the monster away despite being in pain.
The trident was still with Harik, which made the boss turn to its other option again.
Like previously, it made the water around them into its weapons as it levitated the water into waves and formed them into spears once more.
"I will handle the defense...! So go and finish it off, Asak!"
Asak bit his lips as he pressed his closed his eyes.
"Even after all that... Why aren’t you angry with me...?" he murmured bitterly.
He clenched his fists and gradually picked up his pace.
On his right foot, more and more wind gathered. The wind there appeared to get smaller but its density still rose.
"Haa... Haa..." freewebnøvel.coɱ
Harik’s breathing was ragged as he defended himself and Asak from the water attacks.
Meanwhile, the monster was visibly confused without its trident in its hands. In a panic, it shook its head and searched for a way out as Asak came closer with each second.
"This is the end now...!"
Asak jumped up and rotated midair multiple times.
And without a sound, Asak tore off its head with a spinning kick.
Its headless and motionless body fell on its back and the water attacks stopped.
"Harik!"
Asak instantly rushed to Harik after his final blow to the boss.
"A-are you okay?!"
"Y-yeah..." Harik replied weakly with a faint smile.
"You idiot! Why did you-"
However, Asak stopped himself from talking anymore.
Instead of berating Harik’s risky decision to rescue him and create the optimal situation for him even if Harik had to get hurt in the process, Asak knew that he should offer other kinds of words.
"..."
Not only did he avert his gaze but also his body from Harik.
"Hey... Listen up..." he said quietly.
He did not want to tell him the reason why he did what he did because no matter what the reason was, it was utterly wrong of him.
And even though the following words would not make up for all the things Harik had to experience and for all the suffering, those words had to be said. Especially, by Asak.
"I am sorry." Asak admitted genuinely.
In his weakened state, Harik, who was crouched down, looked up to Asak with big eyes.
One could not see it because Harik wore his sunglasses but his eyes started to become teary.
It was at that moment, when he realized something, too.
Harik was a person with a big heart, which was precisely why he maybe wanted to patch things up with Asak deep down.
And maybe this could be the moment when the two could return back time.
Back to the time when they were friends.
However, Harik could not utter a word from his mouth as he and Asak disappeared from the floor.
