Chapter 143: Strange Trio
It was deep in the night.
Cail Maystra was wandering aimlessly on the academy grounds, passing the huge crater, where the academy once stood.
"..."
Unlike his usual demeanor, he seemed stern and somewhat down.
"Hm? What are you doing here so late?"
"..."
Just like Cail, Mika was also taking a stroll around.
"I just wanted to clear my mind by taking a walk." he answered calmly.
"?"
Obviously, Mika raised his eyebrows as he was prepared to get offended by Cail.
However, Cail behaved in a manner, which was considered normal from the perspective of society.
"..."
Cail moved his feet again.
"Is it about your brother perhaps?" Mika accidentally blurted out when Cail passed by him.
He stopped in his tracks.
"Mika Elbar, I won’t bother you anymore in the future."
"?"
"I will focus on my studies and training from now on."
Mika turned his head slightly to him.
"I won’t distract myself and will work hard earnestly."
Cail, too, slightly turned his head to Mika.
"I will become stronger and then, I will find my brother."
Following those words, Cail was about to continue his stroll.
"Wait."
However, Mika did not want to let him go yet.
His entire body was now facing Cail.
"Do you think you can redeem yourself by just doing all these things? Don’t you know what your brother did? You’re surely not stupid enough to be oblivious to all the things he did."
Mika was talking about Xander’s personality as a student of the academy. But maybe Cail also knew some things about his activities outside the academy.
"And not only that but you also hurt many students yourself. How many had to drop out because of you?"
Mika unconsciously raised his voice as he slowly lost himself in his pent-up frustration and anger. Especially, when he remembered Judi, who was threatened by Cail.
That event alone led to the deaths of many people, who were not even affiliated with Loogam.
And it ended up with her dropping out, too.
"You caused so much trouble for the entire year-"
"I know." Cail interrupted him, while still sounding calm.
"I know what I did." he repeated.
"And I know that simply apologizing won’t suffice."
"Then, what will you do?"
Mika squinted his eyes.
"I will let you judge. From now on, I will let my actions do the talking."
"..."
Mika stared at him for a while as he moved further away from him.
"You should better hurry up then. I’m not patient, you know?"
Mika, too, turned around and went his way again.
"Finding his brother, a wanted man? Has he lost his mind? As his judge, it’s obvious what my verdict will be." Mika muttered vexedly.
[Who knows? Maybe his actions will surprise you.]
"Do you know what will happen with him?"
Mika still sounded annoyed.
[Truthfully speaking, I do not know what will happen to him. Therefore, it is making me even more curious to know what he plans on doing.] fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
"Huh? It’s rare for you to flat-out say you don’t know something. I thought you could see in the future or something." Mika joked.
[...]
For a little while longer, Mika continued his stroll.
Meanwhile, somewhere north of Loogam under the clear starry sky, three individuals sat around a small campfire.
Their horses were tied to nearby trees in a dark forest.
While one of those individuals leaned against a tree, trying to sleep, the other two were sitting on the soil near the fire.
"Tch. Those robes smell!" an angry woman complained, on the verge of taking the robe off.
"It’s not like we had other choices." a young man replied while heaving a sigh.
"Don’t throw a tantrum, you child." the person leaning against the tree added.
The voice also belonged to a woman.
In turn, the angry woman got angrier, balling her fist together.
But shortly after that, she calmed down a little.
"You know what? I’m too damn tired to even argue with you of all people." she said, shaking her head.
"Still, it fascinates me that you’re so unfazed. Wouldn’t other humans get shaken by the act of killing other humans?" she directed the question to the young man, sitting opposite from her.
"Don’t lump me in with the regular person." he answered indifferently.
Before setting camp in the forest, the three ambushed and killed a small group of robe-wearing people, who were nearby for a quest.
"What a boring reaction..." she muttered disappointedly.
She pouted a little.
"I can hear you."
"So what?"
"I’m just implying that you should watch your mouth."
"Huh?"
Her tone was intimidating.
"I should watch my mouth? That’s funny coming from you!"
The young man slowly rose up.
"Even after your brilliant plan bit the dust, you can still act so mighty. Color me impressed." he said with a smirk.
"Now you’ve done it."
The woman also stood up and immediately went to him and grabbed him by the collar.
"I helped you all so much and in the end, you failed. If I was a demon, I would be ashamed of you." he continued to pick on her.
The grip on his collar tightened.
"16 of your kind infiltrated Loogam, an additional A-rank demon got summoned at the same time and you even got the help of two other demons, who lured a horde of monsters to Loogam. And yet, you could not kill even a single bigshot attending the tournament." he elaborated.
"..."
She was fuming as she stared at him with great killing intent.
But in the end, she just pushed him away.
"H-hm? If we’re so pathetic, then what should we call you after you came to us?" she tried to rebuke.
It was clear that she was just acting tough as her confident smirk was not confident at all.
The young man sighed while he straightened his collar.
"Did you injure your head during the battle or were you always so dumb?"
"It’s the latter one." the other woman responded quickly.
"I’ve already told you that it’s a coincidence. Do you think I wanted to see your faces so badly? I just escaped as far as possible and somehow ended up in that city." he explained tiredly.
He took some steps forward.
"I suggested that we should stick together for now but if you continue with this attitude of yours, then we could settle this here and now." he stated threateningly.
The angry woman did not shy away.
"Good idea. I’m better with my fists than with words anyway." she answered with a vile smile.
The mood tensed up.
"Enough. Both of you."
However, the woman, who was previously leaning against the tree, stood up and stopped them.
"And who do you think you are to command me?" the young man said, directing his hostile gaze at her.
"That’s right! You’re the last person who can tell me what to do!"
"..."
Painfully, the woman massaged her forehead.
"We have nothing to gain from fighting each other now." she said.
"Well, you have nothing to gain from that. It’s clear that I could kill you even if you teamed up against me." the man stated, shrugging his shoulders.
"You-"
"Stop."
The woman walked over to the two.
"I will ignore your previous comments today but I would recommend you to watch your attitude."
"..."
"Haha, tell him!"
"The same goes for you, too." she said, turning her head to the other woman, who was laughing at the man.
Then, the calmer woman sat down in front of the fire.
"Rather than forming a hierarchy between us, let’s call this a temporary alliance." she suggested, staring at the fire.
"..."
Without uttering anything, the young man sat down again as well.
"Tch. You and your words..."
Reluctantly, the short-tempered woman also took a seat.
And just like that, Martha managed to calm Beatra and Xander down.
"When we’ve met each other in the city you mentioned to me that you have something to tell us, right?"
She shifted the focus to Xander.
"?"
Beatra just tilted her head while crossing her arms.
"It’s about the next phase. Or rather, it’s plan B." Xander said sternly.
"Way back before the invasion began, we discussed what the next steps would look like after the invasion, including what we should do if the invasion should fail."
"!"
Martha widened her eyes.
"The condition for plan B was for the invasion to fail and the nation of Loogam to be doomed." Xander stated.
"And that’s what happened, right?" Beatra said.
"Yes."
"So what entails your so-called plan B?" Martha asked.
A small smirk formed on Xander’s face.
"We will begin preparations for summoning an S-rank demon."
"I see." Martha said, also grinning.
Unbeknownst to Xander, plan B aligned with her thoughts.
"But where will the summon take place this time and do you even have the necessary tools?" Beatra wondered.
"As Loogam can’t be entered anymore, we will relocate to another nation. You also don’t need to worry about the availability of the tools. I even have some targets in mind to speed up the process."
Lily Hayth was one of the people, who crossed his mind.
"During the tournament, I memorized the names and faces of potential sacrifices."
"It all sounds good but where are we heading now?" Martha asked.
Xander’s gaze wandered to the southeast.
"We’re going to Stakew."
