Chapter 107: White-Class Student
"Congratul-"
"You were wonderful, Lily!"
As soon as Lily headed back to Sylvia and her mother, her mother jumped at her, showering her with praise.
"..."
And again, Sylvia could stare blankly at the mother and daughter duo.
"Thanks, Mom."
Lily did not feel an ounce of embarrassment, getting spoiled like that in public.
A few students, who also just fought, passed by them. They threw a glance at them for a second but then ignored them as they headed to the resting hall.
"But can I go to the resting hall first? I feel a bit tired and want to replenish my energy before the next round starts." Lily asked with a tired smile.
"O-oh, sure."
Sylvia watched Lily’s movements thoroughly as she walked back.
She had a pensive look while narrowing her eyes.
From her perspective, Lily was way too exhausted.
"Her opponent may have been an A-rank student, however, Lily shouldn’t have struggled against him..." she muttered.
"Sylvia?"
Lena tilted her head.
"Oh, sorry, I was just talking to myself."
She looked to the battlefield.
"If you want to go to Lily, you can find her in the building right in front of this exit. She is in the resting hall." Sylvia said, pointing in the other direction.
"But your match-"
"It won’t be interesting for you most likely." she replied with a faint smile.
"..."
Lena was looking confused.
"My opponent is apparently the strongest among the red class and some people also stated that she could pose a threat to me, however, those people don’t know about either Lily’s or my true capabilities."
"Furthermore, as a white-class student I can’t allow those people to look down on my class." she added with a teasing grin before she turned to the field.
The cheers turned gradually louder as she moved forward.
"My dear guests! Only a few minutes left until the matches start!"
Compared to the previous rounds, only two matches took place at the same time as there were 8 participants left at the start of the fifth round.
Under the orange afternoon sky, the participants finally assembled.
The last two matches consisted of a match between a red and white-class student and a match between a silver and red-class student.
But naturally, all eyes were on the first match as people had big hopes for the red-class student.
Sylvia’s opponent was a girl with short black hair. Her eyes indicated that she was a water mage and in addition to that, she drew her one-edged sword.
Her sword was just a normal sword with one dull side and one sharp side.
Those, who have already seen a relic with their own eyes, could tell that her sword was not a relic.
Then, the announcer gave the signal to start.
The silver and red student from the other match went at it, whereas Sylvia and her opponent did not move an inch away from their spot.
Tensely, her opponent watched Sylvia’s movements. However, Sylvia herself was focused on the other match. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
"What is Sylvia doing? Didn’t she hear the signal?" Sara asked, watching from the VIP lounge.
"Is she perhaps mocking her opponent?" Yarjak speculated confusedly.
Those two were the only ones in the lounge to voice out their thoughts while the others were watching Sylvia sternly.
Two minutes passed.
"Hey, what’s her deal?"
"Is she forfeiting the match?"
"Why aren’t they doing anything?"
Even the crowd began to get noisy.
"Fuu..." Sylvia’s opponent exhaled deeply.
She was still on her guard despite Sylvia not having shown any signs of moving.
"..."
A faint cold breath exited her mouth as Sylvia also had to exhale.
Now, only seven minutes were left.
It seemed like the other match was about to end with the red student having the upper hand currently.
However, Sylvia focused her attention on herself.
For some reason, she noticed that she had gotten more and more exhausted with the passing of time even though she had not done anything yet.
"The winner of that match is-"
Sylvia closed her eyes, regulating her breathing.
There was something, causing exhaustion among the students. But she could not point out the reason yet.
Five minutes left.
Thinking about that now was useless. Thus, she dismissed any thoughts concerning that topic and switched her focus to her own match.
"!"
Her opponent gripped her sword tighter when she sensed the cold fog surrounding Sylvia.
Four minutes left.
"Is she finally going to attack?" Sara wondered.
Olivia’s gaze narrowed.
"Heh! So she’s able to use that technique, too, huh?"
"Finally feeling to watch a match, Elsa?" Olivia replied with a smirk.
For the first time during the tournament, Elsa, who was supposed to guard the VIPs, left her spot and joined Olivia’s side to watch the match.
"I’m just curious if she can actually pull it off." Elsa responded.
Three minutes left.
The cold fog was still around Sylvia but it did not seem like it spread in the last couple of minutes. It was just about one or two feet around her.
She opened her eyes and slightly bent the ends of her mouth upwards.
"So you want me to come at you, huh...?" her opponent said nervously and annoyedly.
The blade of her sword slowly got engulfed with water.
Two minutes left.
"Watching until the other match concluded and waiting for the time to run out... You want to end this with one strike, right...?" she muttered tensely.
Her sword’s blade looked like it was stuck in a water block.
Due to her control, nothing dripped on the soil.
"Attacking you, an ice mage, with water would be stupid but luckily I have other means to beat you." she stated confidently.
One minute left.
She leaped to Sylvia, who was still remaining on her spot.
Her sword was retracted to the back and when she finally was in striking reach, she swung her sword from the ground to the air, creating a waterwall high and wide enough to hide a person behind it.
From Sylvia’s perspective, it was not visible if a person was behind the wall or not.
Then, small and fast water projectiles were shot from the waterwall but they instantly turned into ice and shattered on the ground.
"Fuu..."
Her opponent, who was now behind Sylvia, exhaled one last time as she prepared to cut Sylvia diagonally from above.
However, when she was within arm’s reach, her elbows, forearms and the entire sword turned into ice.
Even her right leg, which was leaning to Sylvia, was frozen.
Sylvia turned around slowly with a grin on her face.
"...!"
Her opponent could only shiver her lips in cold as she could not move away due to her leg.
Sylvia reached her hand to her neck but before she could even touch her, her neck and everything else in the vicinity of the reaching arm began to freeze.
The ice started to spread to her chin and then almost to her mouth.
"I...I-I g-g-give up...!" she stuttered freezingly.
The fog dispersed and the ice on her body began to unfreeze.
Even the announcer was so baffled by the outcome that he forgot to declare a winner.
Still, Sylvia walked back to the back exit without an expression on her face.
"T-the fifth round is now over with Sylvia Pyril being the winner-"
"What do you think, Elsa?" Olivia asked grinningly from her seat.
"She has potential. That’s it." Elsa replied, already having turned her back on Olivia.
"Let me guess. If it were you, then you would have frozen your opponent completely in that distance." Olivia remarked.
"Heh, you know me."
Meanwhile, the crowd remained silent at first as they were also overwhelmed by the outcome.
But they soon began to cheer loudly again even though they rooted for the red-class student at first.
The difference between the two was so big that they all changed their minds and recognized their naivety.
And while the red-class student was still busy with the ice on her body, Sylvia was heading to the resting room.
"Haa... Haa..." she was breathing heavily.
She was sweating a lot.
"I knew that this technique would consume a lot of magic and concentration, however, this wouldn’t have made me that exhausted..."
The ability to instantly freeze things in a certain vicinity without touching them. It was a technique that only experts in that field could use.
Sylvia managed to grasp the idea behind it during the month when she was on missions with Lily.
Her technique was far from perfect as she could not freeze her opponent completely, however, she was still learning.
"It feels like my magic got sucked out of me..."
The only thing on her mind now was to grab a stamina potion in the resting hall that the academy offered each student after a match to regain their magic.
With only the semifinals ahead of them, the third day reached its end.
And yet, no one was able to locate Mika on that day.
