Chapter 81: Relief

Raven

It was impossible not to hear the commotion downstairs.

Even from my room on the upper floor of the Alpha building, the noise carried clearly through the halls. Raised voices, hurried footsteps, doors slamming open and shut—it all echoed loudly enough to make my nerves tighten.

Only moments earlier, I had been pacing anxiously around my room, worrying about Alpha Axel’s return from the hunt. He had left earlier with several warriors, and ever since then I’d been unable to settle down.

Every little sound had made me restless.

But this—

This was different.

At first, I tried to ignore it.

The pack house was rarely quiet to begin with, and I told myself it was probably nothing important. Still, the panic in the voices downstairs kept growing louder, more frantic, until I couldn’t ignore it anymore.

Something was wrong.

I frowned and moved toward the door, hesitating briefly before pulling it open.

The first thing that surprised me was the empty hallway.

The guard usually stationed outside my room was gone.

For the past few days, someone had always been assigned to remain nearby, though the female guard who had originally watched over me had apparently been reassigned not long ago. After that, one of the male guards had taken over the duty.

But now there was no one.

The absence immediately made my stomach twist uneasily.

The shouting downstairs continued.

"Axel’s still bleeding! Feed him more potions!"

The booming voice carried clearly through the building, and I instantly recognized it as Rex.

Only this time, there was something I had never heard from him before.

Panic.

Real panic.

My heart skipped painfully.

Without thinking further, I stepped out into the hallway and hurried toward the stairs.

The closer I got, the stronger the scent became.

Blood.

So much blood.

The metallic smell hit me before I even reached the lower floor, sharp and suffocating enough to make my chest tighten. My pace slowed instinctively as fear crawled through me.

What happened?

By the time I descended the staircase, the entire lower floor was in chaos.

Guards stood everywhere.

More than I had ever seen gathered in one place before.

Several of them crowded near the entrance while others blocked the corridors leading deeper into the building, tense and alert like they were preparing for an attack.

And right at the center of it all—

Was Axel.

I froze.

For a second, I genuinely couldn’t process what I was seeing.

His body was covered in blood.

Not splattered.

Covered.

It looked as though someone had drenched him entirely in it. Dark red stained his clothes, his skin, even the floor beneath him. His eyes were closed, and his face looked frighteningly pale.

My breath caught in my throat.

No.

No, no—

The healer Arkan was already there, kneeling beside him along with Gessia, who was hurriedly uncorking potion bottles with trembling hands.

"Another one," Arkan snapped.

Gessia immediately tilted another potion against Axel’s lips.

I stood completely still near the edge of the room, unable to move closer even though every instinct screamed at me to.

Everyone looked terrified.

Rex looked furious.

Thor looked tense enough to explode.

Even the guards surrounding them had expressions filled with unease.

And somehow that frightened me more than the blood itself. ƒrēewebnovel.com

Because these were wolves.

Warriors.

Men who fought constantly and returned injured all the time.

But this?

This was different.

I stared at Axel silently as Gessia forced more healing potion into him.

At first, his face had looked almost gray beneath the blood, lifeless in a way that made my stomach churn.

But slowly—

Very slowly—

Color began returning to his skin.

The change was slight, but noticeable enough that several people in the room visibly relaxed.

I swallowed hard without realizing it.

The humans did this?

The thought alone stunned me.

Humans were weak compared to wolves. Everyone knew that. Even I knew that much despite how little I understood about the werewolf world.

So how had they managed to injure Axel this badly?

Not just injure him.

Nearly kill him.

I stayed near the side of the room, saying nothing while everyone rushed around him. No one paid much attention to me anyway. Their entire focus remained on Axel.

And honestly—

I preferred it that way.

Because while everyone else looked horrified and worried, another feeling quietly settled inside me.

Relief.

The realization made guilt twist uncomfortably inside my chest.

But I couldn’t stop it.

I didn’t want to sleep with him.

Didn’t want him touching me.

Didn’t want to become another possession in his life simply because he had decided I belonged to him.

And now, seeing him unconscious and injured so badly...

A terrible part of me felt grateful.

His misfortune had become my blessing.

The thought alone should have horrified me.

Instead, I simply stood there silently while the others continued trying to stabilize him.

Time passed slowly after that.

At some point, more guards arrived.

Then more healers.

The entire Alpha building remained tense as everyone waited for some sign that Axel would survive.

I never left.

I stayed near the wall quietly watching as Gessia continued feeding him potion after potion while Arkan checked his wounds repeatedly.

Eventually, the bleeding slowed.

Then stopped altogether.

The collective relief in the room was immediate.

Several guards visibly relaxed while Rex dragged a hand harshly through his hair like he’d been holding himself together by force alone.

Thor muttered something under his breath that sounded suspiciously like a curse.

Only after another long while did Axel finally begin breathing more steadily.

"He’ll live," Gessia announced eventually, exhaustion clear in her voice.

The tension in the room broke instantly.

I hadn’t even realized how tightly I’d been holding my breath until then.

Several warriors immediately moved forward to carefully lift Axel.

Even unconscious, he looked intimidating.

Massive.

Heavy.

His blood soaked through the cloth wrapped around him as they carried him toward the staircase leading to his private quarters.

I watched silently until he disappeared from sight.

Only then did the room slowly begin settling down. fгeewebnovёl.com

But the conversations didn’t stop.

If anything, they became more serious.

"The weapon pierced straight through him," Thor growled angrily.

"That shouldn’t even be possible," Rex snapped back.

I stayed where I was quietly listening.

No one acknowledged me.

No one cared enough to send me away yet.

"The humans couldn’t have created something like that on their own," another warrior muttered.

"They had help," Thor said darkly.

"There’s no other explanation."

I frowned slightly.

Weapon?

What kind of weapon could hurt someone like Axel that badly?

The thought unsettled me more than I wanted to admit.

Rex leaned heavily against the table nearby, his expression stormy.

"We need to figure out what they used before this gets worse."

"And how exactly do you plan on doing that?" someone asked.

Thor answered immediately.

"We go to the human village."

The room fell silent for a second.

Then several voices erupted at once.

"That’s reckless."

"It’s necessary."

"If humans really have weapons capable of harming Alphas—"

"Then we can’t ignore it," Rex finished coldly.

I listened carefully, trying not to look too obvious about it.

The human village.

They were planning to investigate.

My stomach tightened uneasily.

The wolves rarely involved themselves directly with human settlements unless absolutely necessary. If Thor and Rex were both discussing it this seriously, then the situation was worse than I originally thought.

"They won’t just hand over information willingly," one of the guards muttered.

"Then we take it," Thor replied bluntly.

No one argued with him after that.

I shifted slightly where I stood.

Part of me wanted to keep listening.

I wanted to understand what was happening, what kind of weapon humans suddenly possessed that could nearly kill someone as strong as Axel.

But another part of me simply felt exhausted.

The entire night had become overwhelming far too quickly.

I glanced once toward the staircase where they had carried Axel.

The strange relief from earlier still lingered quietly inside me, though now it mixed uneasily with confusion.

Because despite everything—

Despite how much I resented him—

Seeing him lying there unconscious had still frightened me.

I hated that.

"Raven."

I startled slightly at the sound of my name.

One of the guards was looking at me now.

"You need to return to your room."

His tone wasn’t rude, but it also made it clear that it wasn’t a request.

I hesitated briefly, wanting to stay and hear more.

But I knew I didn’t really have a choice.

Not here.

Not in this pack.

So I simply nodded quietly and turned toward the stairs.

The conversations behind me continued as I walked away.

Talk of humans.

Weapons.

The village.

Plans.

War.

Every word followed me up the staircase like a shadow.

By the time I reached my room again, my chest felt strangely heavy.

The hallway guard had returned to his position outside my door.

He avoided meeting my eyes as I stepped inside.

I closed the door softly behind me before leaning back against it with a long exhale.

The room suddenly felt far too quiet after all the chaos downstairs.

For a moment, I simply stood there thinking.

About Axel.

About the blood.

About the humans somehow creating a weapon powerful enough to wound an Alpha.

And worst of all—

About the terrible relief I had felt when I thought he might actually die.

I slowly moved toward the bed before sitting down heavily.

Somewhere downstairs, the pack was still awake and preparing for whatever came next.

But alone in my room, all I could think about was the look of Axel covered in blood.

And the terrifying realization that things inside the pack were beginning to change.
