Chapter 19: Omegas are Weak

I stepped out, and a female guard—the same one who had brought me to the hall—instantly straightened and spoke before I could. "Follow me," she ordered. "I’ll show you to your sleeping place," she said with no particular expression on her face. She didn’t care, and it was clear she was simply following instructions.

Steadily, I followed behind her as instructed, desperately wanting to get out of the red dress I wore and change into one of the other dresses I had brought. Not once had I thought of Yemac, who was supposed to have been my partner.

To be honest, I hoped he burned. Whatever intentions he had for me were just as bad as what Rex, Axel, and Thor had just told me. Still, as we stepped out of the Alpha’s building—which was the largest in the pack—my eyes flickered toward the other houses.

They were well built, but clearly meant to house only a couple of people. Even then, the guard kept walking, and I didn’t know whether or not to be thankful that wherever we were headed seemed far away from where Rex and Axel, in particular, lived. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

I would take indifference over hatred any day—which was mostly what I got from Thor.

Still, it didn’t take too long before the guard finally stopped, pointing her fingers toward something that instantly brought a frown to my face. Understanding bloomed when I realized why she had referred to it as a sleeping place instead of a room.

It was tiny.

It was a small structure that seemed to have been hurriedly constructed, with other similar rooms lined beside it, separated only by thin walls and a single door. Mine was the first one. I walked toward it, pulling the door open, a bit relieved by what I saw inside.

It was small, but the space stretched lengthwise rather than wide. Stepping in, the air felt fresh because of the large window. I looked around and saw only a wooden bed—nothing else.

The guard stepped in behind me and began to speak. "...you will eat communal meals, and your schedule will be given to you for when you will help prepare them," she said.

"Apart from that, the Alphas have instructed that you be left alone," she continued. "You can do whatever you want in your spare time until you are called by them. I was instructed that you would be serving Alpha Rex directly."

To brood and lie on my back, you mean, I thought, tempering the anger that rose within me with nowhere to go, as she continued, her voice turning slightly softer—almost kind.

"You are an omega. You are weak, and I do not smell your wolf on you. It is either too weak, or you were born without one," she said—something uncommon, but not rare, depending on whether my mother had been an omega or a human.

"...serve the Alphas well, and you will be protected. As you are already aware, the only reason Alpha Avalon hasn’t attacked is because of how well hidden we are—especially after abducting his son. You cannot get stronger, so serve better," she instructed, and I nodded, lowering my head as I knew to do.

A smile flashed across her face before she turned to leave, heading out of the small room that now belonged to me. "...I’ll have your things sent here, so just rest," she said before walking away, her back the only thing I could see.

For a moment, I simply stood there, staring at her back without shutting the door. She had been nice to me—something I was vastly unused to in my original pack. Since my own family treated me with disdain, others simply followed their lead.

But this guard, because I was an omega, saw a reason to be kinder to me than necessary. It felt... different. Warmer than I remembered. I found myself smiling faintly, realizing how long it had been since someone had shown me even the smallest amount of care. For a brief moment, it warmed my chest.

Turning around, I moved to shut the door—only to see a young woman step right in front of it, raising her hand to knock, only to pause when she spotted me.

A chuckle danced on her lips as she began to speak. "Hah... almost missed you there," she said with a bright, beaming smile that lit up her entire face. She pulled the door open wider, and I noticed the bundle in her hands. They were mine.

"So... you must be the omega. You are very pretty," she gushed, her words spilling out quickly, as though she had far too much to say and not enough time to say it.

"...your kind is super rare! Especially since most alpha bloodlines don’t produce them—even with omega mothers, it’s purely by chance," she continued. I couldn’t help but listen, though a hint of bitterness crept into my tone, which I tried to hide.

"You make it sound like something great. I don’t have a wolf, and I’m weak and useless," I said, wondering why there was a gleam in her eyes—something that almost looked like jealousy, if seen from another angle.

What was there to be jealous of, when I wanted to be like her—a normal wolf who wouldn’t be used for breeding?

At my words, she looked confused, then smirked. "There’s no way you don’t know, right?" she asked, sounding like she was barely holding back laughter. She leaned closer in a conspiratorial manner before speaking again.

"...after mating—or continuous mating—if an alpha’s willpower is weak, an omega can control his pheromones. I’ve even heard that some omegas can do much more than that... they can turn alphas into their bed slaves."

"Lies!" I gasped before she even finished. "...if you’ve never seen omegas before, then how can you be sure? It might just be—"

But she shook her head vigorously, smiling.

"The books never lie—and neither do the elders," she said, referring to the oldest members of the pack who studied all knowledge—past and present—of werewolves before passing it down to their successors. They were sacred, never to be harmed, even during pack takeovers.

"It’s why omegas are so weak," she continued, her voice dropping lower this time, almost cautious—as though afraid of being overheard. "...because if they had wolves, or were as strong as normal werewolves, then they would lead instead of the alphas."
