Chapter 89: Your Doom, Not Mine!

The morning light did not reach the corridor outside Azure’s quarters. The heavy oak doors remained shut, casting a long, cold shadow across the stone floorboards. Odesse walked with a slow, measured pace, the soft fabric of her gown rustling quietly against the stillness of the hall. Beside her, Cara kept step, her arms crossed defensively as she glanced at the row of silent rooms.

As they drew nearer to the center of the eastern wing, Odesse’s footsteps slowed. She paused directly in front of the heavy, carved entrance to Azure’s private bedchamber. Her silver eyes fixed on the wood, tracking the sharp, elegant lines of the family crest that had been mounted there.

Cara stopped a half-step ahead, turning back with a slight frown. "What’s wrong?" she asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper.

Odesse didn’t look away from the door. "I want to speak with Azure."

Cara’s eyes widened slightly, and she instinctively stepped closer, her grip tightening on the linens. "Are you sure that’s a good idea? She hasn’t let anyone in for two days. Miss Faye said we should just leave her to rot in her own isolation."

Odesse turned her head, offering Cara a small, reassuring smile. "I am sure. But you do not have to come inside if you are uncomfortable."

"If you are going in there, I am following you," Cara insisted firmly, her chin lifting. "I’m not leaving you alone with her."

Odesse chuckled softly, a warm spark in her eyes. "Alright. Let us go, then."

Odesse raised her hand and knocked firmly against the thick wood. The sound echoed down the empty corridor, flat and heavy. They waited, but the silence from within remained absolute. Not a single footstep or rustle of fabric answered. Odesse knocked a second time, louder this time, her knuckles rapping sharply against the paneling. Still, nothing changed.

Without waiting for permission, Odesse reached down, wrapped her fingers around the cold iron handle, and pushed. The heavy door groaned on its hinges, swinging inward to reveal a room completely swallowed by darkness. The thick velvet curtains were drawn so tightly that not a single speck of the morning sun could break through. The air inside was heavy, smelling stale with the remnants of cloying, bitter floral perfumes and trapped heat.

Cara stepped up behind her, her hand instinctively catching Odesse’s sleeve. "We should leave from here. This feels wrong."

Odesse turned her head slightly, her expression entirely calm in the dim light. "You can if you want to, Cara."

Instead of turning back, Odesse stepped over the threshold, her boots clicking softly on the floorboards as she walked deeper into the shadowed room.

In the center of the chamber, lying flat on the massive bed, was Azure. She was facing the ceiling, her arms rigid at her sides, her eyes wide open and staring blankly into the dark canopy above. She hadn’t moved when the door opened. She didn’t even seem to be breathing, looking almost like a frozen statue in the gloom.

Odesse stopped a few feet from the edge of the mattress, deliberately folding her hands over her chest as she surveyed the scene.

"Why do you come into my chamber, Odesse?" Azure’s voice broke the silence, dry and raspy, cutting through the heavy air without a shred of her usual royal pretense. She didn’t move her head; her eyes remained fixed on the ceiling.

"I came here to check on you," Odesse replied smoothly, her tone even and unbothered.

"To check on me?" Azure let out a low, bitter sound that was entirely devoid of mirth. "I am doing just fine, Odesse."

Odesse tilted her head, her silver gaze tracking the tense line of Azure’s jaw. "What is it you are doing, Azure?"

"What are you doing, Odesse?" Azure retorted, the words sharp and venomous.

Slowly—creepily slowly—Azure turned her head across the pillow to face Odesse. Her eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark shadows, and her face was pale and unwashed. "You walk around this palace acting like you have total power over his highness. You stand at the gates, you smile in the gardens, but everything has been moving very slow, hasn’t it?" A dark, malicious smirk touched Azure’s cracked lips. "Maybe it’s because you don’t actually know how to bring his memory back."

Odesse looked down at her, the calm on her face never fracturing. She let out a soft, amused chuckle. "What are you saying, Azure? Your delusional mind is clouding your logical thinking, it seems."

Azure didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she sat up slowly, the heavy blankets shifting around her. She raised her bare hands to her face, aggressively cleaning her skin, rubbing at her eyes as if trying to scrub away the exhaustion of her internal failure.

"I am in here," Azure said, her voice rising as she shifted her legs over the edge of the bed, her feet hitting the floorboards. She stood up slowly, her posture rigid, her clothes wrinkled from days of confinement. "In my private bedchamber. Away from Valex. But you, Odesse... you choose to disrupt my peace. Instead of trying to bring your lovely husband back, you’re standing in my dark room."

She took a slow, deliberate step closer to Odesse, the stale scent of her anger rolling off her. "Yes, your bond with him is strong. I felt it. And you know his soul remembers you. But you yourself know you need more than just a feeling to make him fully remember who you are. So what are you doing? You’re wasting time. You’re just waiting for me to make a mistake."

Azure stopped just two feet away, her eyes turning entirely cold, boring into Odesse with an intense, unyielding hatred. "Just so you know... maybe you should have killed me the day you came back. Because trust me..." She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "...now I will ruin everyone. Even if it means destroying this entire pack. Because the hatred I have for you, oh Odesse... it is far greater than my love for Valex. And I will make you burn."

Odesse didn’t flinch. She didn’t move her hands from her chest. Instead, she took a single, measured step backward, creating a deliberate pocket of personal space between them. A serene, confident smile graced her features. freewebnσvel.cѳm

"You see," Odesse murmured, her voice carrying a soft, captivating weight that seemed to fill the dark room. "You see, that is the exact difference between you and I. You are fueled entirely by hate, Azure. And I? I am fully fueled by love."

Azure’s jaw tightened, but Odesse continued before she could speak.

"This is no fantasy," Odesse said, her smirk widening just a fraction. "I cannot guarantee the absolute outcome of this rivalry. But trust me... the more you hate me, the more Valex loves me. And the more fueled I get by that love. And who says I have no plan? I am just not as desperate as you to chant a man to love me."

Azure stared at her, her expression twisting from cold fury into a forced, manic smile. She let out a sharp breath, her fingers clenching into fists at her sides. "You see, Odesse... this story is one which I am writing. I hold the quill now. And I know the definite end of it." She stepped closer again, her voice shaking with venomous certainty. "Which is your doom."

Odesse blinked, her expression shifting into one of exaggerated, amused surprise. "Your doom? Oh, wow, Azure. I guess you have spoken. The result will end in your doom."

Odesse turned on her heel, a brilliant smirk spreading across her face as she began to walk toward the door.

"What? No!" Azure shouted after her, her composure breaking as she took a frantic step forward. "Your doom! Not mine!"

Odesse didn’t stop walking. She kept her back to the room, waving a hand carelessly over her shoulder. "Yes, yes, Azure. Your doom, not mine. I understood you the first time."

Behind her, Cara quickly fell into step, her head down as she tried to suppress the sudden, violent urge to laugh out loud.

Just as Odesse reached the threshold of the room, she paused. She turned her head slightly, looking back over her shoulder at the disheveled woman standing in the center of the dark chamber. Her eyes were cool, her voice flat and entirely dismissive.

"You should clean yourself up, Azure," Odesse said smoothly. "You stink. Not just of shame, but of a complete lack of hygiene."

A sharp, quiet chuckle escaped Cara’s lips, muffled quickly by her hand as she stepped past the threshold. Odesse walked out into the bright, fresh air of the corridor without another word, the heavy oak door swinging shut behind them with a definitive click.

Inside the dark room, Azure stood completely frozen, her hands trembling as the insult hung in the stale air. Her face flushed a deep, violent crimson, her nails digging so hard into her palms that the skin nearly broke.

"Watch me ruin your empire, Odesse," Azure screamed at the closed door, her voice cracking with a manic, desperate rage that rattled against the stone walls. "You will wish you remained wherever you were! You will wish you never returned!"
