Chapter 97: Knock Knock
"Aren’t they a little too efficient?" Blaise pondered out loud, scratching his head. "We just got done with one batch. Why is there another one here already?"
"The one that escaped most likely brought intel back that you’re injured," Damon said, sighing. He kicked Lydia’s head as though it was a soccer ball, watching it bounce a few times before stopping a couple of feet away. "Doesn’t help that there’s the smell of blood lingering in the air. Those bloodsuckers are idiots― they probably thought that it was your blood."
"Well, they’ll sure be in for a surprise," Blaise said with a sadistic smile.
Goosebumps flared up all over my skin as I watched the brothers converse. My eyes fixated especially on Blaise, who was wearing all sorts of expressions I had never seen before.
No, wait. I did see them before. Back when I first arrived in Fangborne, he had me tied up on the bed. The true oddity of his character was when he suddenly became unconditionally nice to me, just because we had marked each other. I understood now why the saying was always ’bond before blood’.
There was nothing greater than a fate written in the stars and by the hands of the moon.
"Shouldn’t the vampire that escaped mention that Damon is here now?" I asked, my voice shaky and small. Blaise and Damon turned their heads over to face me, their eyes widening just a small fraction as though they had forgotten I was still there.
"It would be great news for them," Blaise replied, slowly gathering his expression.
"They’re more than eager to have me dead and on a pike," Damon agreed, nodding. "If anything, they would’ve returned with stronger forces."
I looked to the sky, squinting at the sun. It was the height of the afternoon and the weather was swelteringly hot. Even I, someone who loved to bask in the glory of day, could feel the prickles of sunlight against my skin.
"Why would they choose to fight now in the day when it’s a cripple for them?" I asked, frowning. "Something’s not right."
"Beats me," Blaise said with a shrug. "But either way, if they choose to attack, we must defend. We can’t let them past the borders and towards where the civilian pack members stay."
Screams and shouts blared through the campsite, followed by a loud resonation of howls and battle cries. All three of us looked ahead towards the source of the commotion and instantly, our faces darkened. I sucked in a sharp gasp of air through my teeth, taking a step back.
"Get inside," Damon ordered. "If you hear any knocking, don’t answer the door, don’t let anyone in. Got it?"
"Understood!" I quickly answered, scrambling into Blaise’s cabin, where Damon gestured to.
My hands barely even touched the doorknob when I heard the sound of bones cracking and popping. I turned just in time to see two huge black wolves, their midnight coats glistening under the sun. I swallowed the bile in my throat, my heart dropping to my stomach as I watched Damon bolt off.
Before Blaise could follow, I called out, "Blaise!"
He turned, glancing wordlessly at me. My hand instinctively reached for his mark on my neck― I couldn’t feel him. There was no way for me to tell what he was feeling right now.
"Come back to me soon," I said.
I thought I saw a smile creep onto his face, kind and reassuring, followed by a quick nod of his head. Just like that, he shot off as well in the direction Damon left. I entered his hut after; there was no need to stay outside.
The inside of Blaise’s cabin was fairly simple― a bed, a small table with two chairs, a drawer for his clothes, and a small stove with a sink for cooking. There was a small washroom inside the hut, ensuring that all that was necessary for a simple but comfortable stay was provided. If it weren’t for the reason why he would stay here, it was a pretty reasonable accommodation.
More than anything, the cabin smelled like Blaise, something I desperately clung to. Lydia’s body was still outside, planted into the soil like a radish in the field. I had just lost my best friend, right after finding out about her betrayal. Yet, I oddly felt numb inside.
I couldn’t feel much. Specifically, I didn’t know how to feel. How long had it been since I lost someone dear to me?
Faintly, I could hear the battle raging outside those doors. There were snarls, howls, and all sorts of clashing and crashing. Unfortunately, there was also something else Damon warned me about.
I had only just walked over to Blaise’s bed when suddenly, three soft knocks echoed through the cabin. Instantly, I stilled in my tracks, staring at the door in horror. A gasp was clogged in my throat― I didn’t dare to breathe, afraid that whoever was on the other side of the door could hear me. They mustn’t know that there was someone in here. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
"I know you’re in there." It was a man’s voice. "Why don’t you let me in? I can show you something fun."
Staring at the bed, I slowly breathed out, careful not to make a sound. That was definitely not a fellow werewolf outside― they wouldn’t dare speak like this, knowing that this cabin belonged to Blaise. That could only mean one thing.
A vampire had somehow made their way into the camp.
Where was Blaise? Hell, I would even take Damon. Where was anyone?
Unfortunately, I didn’t have the luxury of time to sit around and wait to be rescued. The polite knocking on the door soon evolved into a harsh pounding, followed by furious threats.
"Let me in, poppet, before I blast this cabin right through!" he yelled. "Don’t make me ask thrice!"
Gritting my teeth, I made my way to the bathroom, careful to make as little noise as possible. He already knew I was in here, it didn’t matter how much noise I made. However, it mattered where I made them. I couldn’t let him figure out my position.
"I’m counting to three!" he warned. Then, in a sing-song tune, he said, "One!"
I gently closed the bathroom door behind me, climbing onto the toilet seat.
"Two!"
Thankfully, the window at the top of the bathroom was big enough for me to squeeze through. It shouldn’t be too difficult to get through, with the toilet as a stepping stool. I unlocked the hatch and pushed the window open after looking outside to check.
There wasn’t anyone there.
"Three!"
