Chapter 71: Rot From Inside
"You’re going to the infirmary," Damon said as he glowered at me, in a tone that brooked no argument. But of course, I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t question his orders.
"Why? I’m not injured," I said, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it was true. Damon had not hurt me while we were fucking like rabbits― my muscles were merely sore, but it was a wholly pleasurable ache. He had not drawn blood, or engaged in other kinkier activities that would require me to seek urgent medical attention.
"If you want to give birth to my fucking kids so badly, then stay," Damon smirked, but there was no humor in his eyes. "I’m sure Blaise would be delighted to know his brother impregnated his fated mate."
"Fuck you," I hissed in reply, but Damon had a point. I immediately opened the door and stormed over to the infirmary, Damon hot on my heels.
"Good morning Alpha and Harper!" Nicole greeted us perkily, but her natural morning enthusiasm dampened when she caught sight of our less-than-happy faces. "Or not," she hastily amended, giving both of us a worried look. "May I know what brings you to the infirmary so bright and early?"
I didn’t miss the cautious once-over she gave me with her one good eye, as though she had expected me to be wounded all over, nor the way her nostrils flared as she took a sniff. Nicole must have known what went on the previous night, and she thought Damon had hurt me again.
Her eyes widened when she caught sight of the new collar on my neck.
It warmed my heart to know that at least someone else was worried about my well-being.
"She’s perfectly fine." Damon scowled. I noticed his unhappy face and snorted; he probably wasn’t happy knowing that Nicole cared about me. "I wouldn’t hurt her."
"I’m sure you won’t, Alpha. I see you have given her a beautiful new necklace after all!" Nicole said cheerfully without any condescension, and it sounded like she believed Damon completely. I had to give her props for her acting skills.
She then turned her excitement in my direction, "Then what brings you here Harper? Are you here to visit me? Oh! You’re here to join me for breakfast!"
Nicole exclaimed so hopefully, and I almost felt bad that I had to crush her simple joy. Damon, that bastard, felt no such hesitation since he immediately shook his head and pointed to me.
"Get her contraceptives. The injectables, if there are any. She’ll need it for at least three months."
Three months?! I shot Damon an alarmed look. Was he planning on keeping me in Fangborne and fucking me for those three months? Was Blaise’s mission supposed to take him away for so long?
Fine. I would get the damn contraceptive and then train myself to join Blaise at the border.
"Oh, got it, Alpha." Nicole’s face fell, and then she examined my upset face. "Are you sure about this, Harper? There could be side effects. Some people see hair loss, weight gain, possible hallucinations..." Her voice trailed off anxiously.
I appreciated the fact that Nicole was asking me directly about this, even if she couldn’t disobey Damon’s orders. The contraceptives were for my body, after all, and it was nice to be consulted, even if I knew I had no real say in the proceedings.
Thankfully, Damon and I were on the same page regarding this matter. Life would be a lot more difficult if we weren’t.
"Give me the contraceptive," I said steely, "I don’t care what side effects they are. Nothing can be worse than being pregnant with this man’s child." freeweɓnovel.cøm
And I was sure of it. Damon was already so insufferable as an adult. Forget baldness, weight gain, and hallucinations, if I had to produce a mini version of him, I would rather fling myself off a skyscraper and let vampires feast on my scraps.
Meanwhile, Nicole gasped at my rude words, barely daring to give Damon a second glance. I turned to Damon and pointed at the door.
"You can go now, or do you not trust Nicole?" I demanded. He didn’t need to be here for this, and I didn’t want him here.
Damon paused and glared at me. I didn’t need matching mating marks to know that he was wordlessly seething under his breath. But I caught his eye and kept pointing at the door with a raised eyebrow.
Eventually, Damon turned around and left, slamming the infirmary door shut.
"My my, that was tense!" Nicole breathed out in relief, her shoulders finally relaxing as the atmosphere lightened. "Harper, I can’t believe you have the guts to speak to the Alpha like that!"
"Someone has to," I grumbled under my breath. Now that Blaise was at the borders, there was no one in this entire pack who dared to stand up against him. I would gladly take up this job since I had technically nothing left to lose. "He’s an asshole."
Nicole coughed, hiding a laugh behind her hand. I noticed she didn’t deny my words. "So you do want the contraceptive? That can be arranged. Just sit here and give me a minute... it should be right around here..."
As Nicole rummaged around her drawers, I sat down on one of the empty beds. Now the infirmary was completely empty save for the two of us; Elijah must have been discharged when I was unconscious.
"Here it is!" Nicole brandished a bottle and a syringe, drawing up the substance and tapping it to remove any air bubbles, expertly outfitting it with the long pointy needle at the end.
I gulped. The needle was a lot bigger than expected.
"This looks scary, but I assure you, it’s just like an ant bite!" Nicole said reassuringly as she rolled up my sleeve and wiped an area clean with antiseptic. "All the werewolf pups get vaccinated like this."
I could only nod, and try not to look as the needle went into my flesh, flooding the substance in my body.
"What is it though?" I asked.
"It’s a natural contraceptive that contains the essences of multiple fruits. It’ll regulate your hormones and prevent pregnancy. Since you are taking it for three months, I didn’t want to give you the one containing trace amounts of wolfsbane, even though it would technically be more effective. I don’t want to damage your internal systems, especially when you’re still healing."
I choked at the news that wolfsbane could be used as a contraceptive. I supposed if it could kill a werewolf, it would kill a werewolf fetus just as easily.
"So, this is still effective right? I won’t get pregnant?" I asked desperately. "I can’t take any chances. I don’t care if my body rots from within. I’ll take the wolfsbane!"
"Harper, please relax. The chances of pregnancy are near negligible, unless something wondrous happens, like the Moon Goddess herself implanting the baby inside you," Nicole reassured me. "I’ve used this on many women, and not one of them got pregnant when they didn’t want it."
I nodded, feeling more secure. Now that I was alone with her, I had a question to ask.
"Nicole, Damon told me he couldn’t take off this necklace. Do you know why?"
