Chapter 50: Conniving Manchild

My hands balled into a fist, and it was only Blaise’s warning presence that stopped me from flinging said fist straight into Damon’s face. A growl escaped my throat as I glared hotly at Damon. At that very moment, I hated him with every fiber of my being.

That bastard did it on purpose.

This man was abusing his authority to send my mate to the borders, effectively separating us just when we found each other.

"I’m going with Blaise," I said firmly even as my body vibrated with barely repressed rage. Damon only gave an amused chuckle in response. I turned to Blaise and grabbed his hand. "You’re not going anywhere without me. I have nothing to pack― I can leave immediately."

A look of anguish crossed Blaise’s face, but he still attempted to smile for my sake. "Harper, there’s nothing I want more, but you can’t come with me. It’s too dangerous. The borders of our extended territory have seen multiple raiding attempts as well as conflict from other packs. I have to go and resolve the conflicts."

"It’s too dangerous for me, but it’s not dangerous for you?" I demanded incredulously. Fear was now rolling out of me in waves. I had finally found my mate; I wasn’t going to lose him to some pack war, or god forbid, a stray arrow lodged at the back of his neck.

Suddenly, the situation became crystal clear.

Damon couldn’t force Blaise and me to sever the bond, so he chose to send Blaise to a far-off place rife with all sorts of dangers to separate us, hoping that Blaise could die so that our bond would be rendered moot.

Fuck this bastard!

"Blaise is too nice to tell you this; you are a useless human," Damon said in a patronizing tone, as though he was talking to a particularly dim-witted child. "If you were capable enough, I would have sent you along with him, but in your current state, you are nothing more than deadweight for Blaise. You’ll drag him down."

I bristled. Everyone knew I was a human, but Blaise didn’t care about it. Damon did, and now he was upset that he had lost the right to mark me first to his brother.

"And you’re a jealous manchild that can’t stand your brother being happier than you. Don’t you think it’s pathetic to punish Blaise and I for your own ineptitudes?" I roared; anger loosened my tongue, and the words flew out of me like notched arrows taking flight. There was a sudden gasp as the werewolves listening heard my insults.

"Harper!" Blaise scolded me, shooting a wary glance at Damon’s face. freeweɓnøvel.com

Damon’s eyes were dark with seething rage, and his entire body was brimming with hostility as he glared at me with so much hatred that I was honestly surprised that I had not vaporized on the spot.

"Hold your tongue, or I’ll make sure you lose it for good," Damon warned, his voice deceptively calm, and I had a feeling it wasn’t an idle threat.

"Tear it out then, if you can," I tilted my head, and stuck it out, a blatantly rude expression on my face. "I’ll be going with Blaise, tongue or no tongue," I continued, "So you can stop your conniving act to split us up for good. Even if you keep me here, I will never prefer you over Blaise!"

Another stunned gasp met my pronouncement. To my surprise, the one who let out the loudest gasp was none other than Blaise, who was staring at me like he had never seen anyone like me before. It was similar to the way he gazed at me when we first marked each other; it made me feel like I was a priceless, peerless beauty, for he looked at me so reverently as though I was the first sunrise after a long night, or the first snow heralding the start of winter.

There was a wet sheen on his eyes, but he blinked and it was gone. But I knew what I saw, and the feeling of gratitude that enveloped me through the bond nearly caused my own tears to well up. As the younger twin, Blaise must have spent the entirety of his life being compared to Damon― and with Damon being Alpha, it was no surprise that men and women flocked to him for approval.

Now, they even had to share a fated mate. Blaise must have thought that somehow, I would be alright with staying with Damon as he went on conducting pack business since Damon was also my fated mate.

He couldn’t be more wrong!

"Harper..." He said weakly, "I..."

I grabbed his hand and gave Damon one final flinty look from the corner of my eyes. "Come on, Blaise, let’s go. You can tell me more about our future journey to the ridiculously dangerous borders of the extended pack territories while I pack for us," I said imperiously, dragging Blaise away from Damon, who only stared at me with a shell-shocked look on his face.

This must be the first time Damon had been so wholeheartedly rejected and humiliated in public. Served him right for deploying such a petty trick. If I hadn’t seen Damon transform into a powerful majestic wolf, I would have thought his animal form was a scheming weasel.

What kind of reputable alpha of a powerful pack would resort to this sort of ploy to separate his own twin brother’s mate from him? The very thought made me gnash my teeth in rage.

Finally, we arrived back in our rooms. I opened the cupboard and perused Blaise’s outfits.

"So, where are we going?" I asked as I began to pull out his clothes. There were a lot of white t-shirts and jeans, nothing too outlandish. "Will it be cold? You don’t even have a proper coat here."

"Wait... you were serious about going with me?" Blaise asked wonderingly.

"Why, you didn’t think I was serious?"

Blaise blinked, "I thought you might have said it to spite Damon. I wasn’t lying when I said it was dangerous, and Damon knows it too. I would have never forgiven myself if something happened to you while we were out there."

"But―" freewebnσvel.cøm

"I’ll settle this issue quickly and come back to you. You won’t feel my absence with Damon here," Blaise promised, but I knew there was no guarantee this would happen.

Besides, how could I not feel his absence? Just the very thought of him leaving sent a hollow ache in my very soul.

"I would never let you go off to some strange dangerous place alone!" I declared. "Damon can go and fuck himself for all I care, I had enough of his petty bullshit. If I don’t go with you, god knows what he’ll pull next. Maybe you’ll be sent further away the moment you come back!"
