Chapter 32: Run For It
Susie crossed her arms, and I noticed the bruises decorating her wrists, as though someone had chained her up or held her down hard enough to hurt.
Clearly, someone had gotten punished.
"Don’t say that about yourself," I retorted with a smile as I made a show of cracking my knuckles. "Nice collar by the way. It’s only lacking a leash."
A sleek black leather circled her throat, with a tag with the number ten on it. I wondered what it meant. There were multiple hickeys decorating her neck, and I couldn’t help but wonder if they were from Damon or Blaise. I wouldn’t be surprised if those two were tunnel buddies and shared their women as well.
It was utter insanity, but judging by the way Damon so cooly responded to Blaise’s proclamation of me being his fated mate as well, it seemed like he was still open to sharing with his twin brother.
Psychotic. Sharing mates was unheard of. We were more like glorified whores.
Susie scoffed and rolled her eyes. I didn’t miss the way her gaze landed on my collar, however, which was a shade of gray lighter than her original one. I made a mental note to ask Elijah later about the colors of the collars. However, it was clear enough to see that Susie’s rank must be no better than mine.
"What are you doing here?" Elijah repeated his question, his frown deepening. He took a protective step forward, shielding me behind Susie.
Or more accurately, to prevent me from pouncing on her and ripping her a new one if she decided to push my buttons further.
"The Alpha said to stay in your room," he continued. "You’re not allowed out."
"I am allowed anywhere I want to be," she said. "You’re in no position to order me around." ƒгeewebnovёl.com
Elijah’s face darkened into the color of soot. Thunderclouds seemed to gather around him and his aura instantly changed. Even Susie’s haughtiness fractured for a second, the look of fear flashing across her eyes the moment Elijah’s demeanor changed.
He walked forward and yanked Susie by the collar, causing her hands to fly to her neck as she gasped for air. Due to their height difference, Elijah had practically lifted Susie off the ground. She struggled to stay on her feet, having to balance precariously on the tips of her toes as she choked for air.
"Don’t fool yourself, Susie," Elijah said, his eyes flashing with warning. It seemed to glow electrifyingly, power radiating from him.
All this while, Elijah had only ever showcased a sunshine, fun-loving side of him. I hadn’t expected he was capable of such cold words.
"You may bear the Alpha’s mark on you but you’re nothing but an in-house whore," he said, voicing out the thoughts I just had in mind. He then threw her words back at her and said, "You are in no position to order me around. Don’t be mistaken. It’s not the other way around."
When he abruptly let go of her, Susie collapsed to the ground with a thud. She hacked and coughed, trying to regulate her breathing as she coldly glared at Elijah and me. However, unlike before, she had nothing much to say other than the heated glares. If her gazes were poisonous, I would no doubt be six feet under with the way she looked at me.
"Could you wait for me by the main gate, Harper?" Elijah asked, turning back to face me as he spoke.
His tone was a lot lighter than when he had spoken to Susie, but the look of exhaustion still hung on his weary features. Elijah slid a hand down his face, his skin pulling a little due to the action. He then sighed, casting a glance at the woman on the floor over his shoulder.
"I’ll need to make sure she stays put in her room before Alpha Damon finds out she’s roaming the halls again," he said.
"She is under confinement?" I asked, trying to keep the gleeful smile from bursting across my face.
I didn’t want to think of what sort of punishments she had to face― that would no doubt trigger a bout of jealousy I wish I didn’t have. However, I could still gloat at her misfortunes. I wouldn’t want to be trapped in a room.
"Until further notice," Elijah affirmed. "You still remember the way? We were there just this morning."
I nodded once, the image of the path appearing in my mind’s eye.
"Good," he said. "Wait for me there. I will just take a few minutes."
Elijah then bent down and without another word, picked Susie up and threw her over his shoulder as though she was no more than a sack of potatoes. His long legs allowed him to cover a lot of distance rather quickly, and in no time, he had disappeared past a corner, leaving me alone.
Alone.
Wouldn’t this be the perfect time to make a dash for it?
My heart skipped a beat in my chest, an escape plan formulating in my head.
I didn’t know whether it would be successful. After all, I had yet to learn enough about the pack’s territory to effectively plan an escape route without getting caught. However, the pack’s leaders were all gathered here in Sirius House. That meant that as long as I left this packhouse, the chances I would run into someone who could recognize me would be minimal to none.
With that thought in mind, I began to make my way for the exit.
Elijah was with Susie, while Damon and Blaise were occupied in their little chat. Kaine, I assumed, would be with the Alpha and Beta as well.
I might never get a chance like this again.
My speed increased and in no time, I could spot the gate that would lead me right to my freedom. There was no one there to guard it, oddly enough. I hovered there for a second, hesitatingly looking back at the packhouse for a second.
It was now or never. Damon didn’t wish to see me anyway. He wouldn’t mind if I disappeared, right?
Without waiting a moment more, I began to brisk walk out of the packhouse. Once I was in the clear and away from the line of sight of possible werewolves, surrounded by lush forestry, I broke into a sprint.
All roads lead to Rome. As long as I ran straight ahead, I was bound to make it to the edge of Fangborne’s territory.
"It’s as you wish, Damon," I murmured under my breath.
Time to leave this prison.
