Chapter 201: Fortune-telling

"He doesn’t seem like someone willing to let her go," I mused, recalling the resigned manner he had stood in front of Dahlia’s claws. If I had not pulled him away in time, Alpha Burke and his wife would be cradling their son’s decapitated head in time.

It was as though part of him longed to die under her claws, for his blood to forever stain her hands.

If it was a way of enacting revenge on her for marrying Damon, it was certainly a strange one indeed. After all, there was no way anyone would be able to forget murdering their fated mate in cold blood during their wedding. Even if Dahlia were to be unmoved, the rest of werewolf society would shun her accordingly. freewebnσvel.cøm

Yet it was highly unlikely for Milo to have such a vicious idea.

It was more likely that Milo was so desperate for Dahlia to notice him for once that he was willing to die for that to happen. Maybe he hoped that she would stay her hand when she felt his beating heart under her claws. Maybe he wanted her to catch a glimpse of his heart after she ripped through his body so that she could sense his feelings for her. Maybe he hoped to change her mind, after seeing him face death in the eye without flinching.

Well. I stopped his plans right there by saving him. Hopefully, Milo wasn’t too upset about living.

Alpha Burke’s lips twisted into a frown; he clearly hadn’t missed his son’s lingering affections for Dahlia.

"My wife and I will talk to him and make him see sense." He sighed heavily as he rubbed a hand over his eyes. "There is no happy future with a mate that shows no qualms about killing you. The faster he rejects her, the faster the Moon Goddess can find someone new for him."

A second chance mate. All of us nodded in agreement. Sometimes, when both sides have agreed to break the bond, the Moon Goddess might decide to bless them with another chance with someone else.

It was also offered to werewolves with deceased mates. Perhaps that was another reason why Dahlia was so quick and eager to murder Milo in cold blood. I bet she was hoping that the Moon Goddess would pair her up with Damon.

"God forbid, anyone else would be better than that spoiled, trigger-happy, arrogant princess from Thunderstrike. I’ll even hope for an ordinary human girl for him," Alpha Burke continued, casting a derisive glance at the church, where we heard the sound of things getting smashed.

I guessed Dahlia must be throwing the temper tantrum to end all temper tantrums inside.

"Really?" Blaise asked. "A human for your future pack luna?"

"Of course. Look at Miss Harper here, human she might be, she is brave and kind and refuses to be intimidated by nonsense. You are a credit to your family."

"I’m honored by your words," I said, feeling strangely touched. "My old family wouldn’t think so, but thank you for thinking so highly of me."

My own father, rotting in hell, never said such nice things about me, ever.

"I wish you every success in that endeavor," Blaise said, sounding sincere for once. "Hopefully, Milo finds someone new soon. The world is vast, and I’m sure someone more suitable for him will show up."

"All of you have an open invite to visit Hornstead," Alpha Burke said, his eyes warm as he looked at us. "I recommend coming in autumn― the foliage is lovely, and our harvests are a sight for sore eyes. We’ll be sending a part of them your way, but I would still highly recommend all of you to visit whenever possible." freeweɓnøvel.com

"I would like that," I said, and I actually meant it.

Hornstead had been nothing but welcoming to us, but then I recalled Luna Cassidy’s ominous prediction about my future. There was something I had to know, but I couldn’t ask her directly since she was already in the truck with her son.

"Alpha Burke, how accurate is your wife’s fortune telling?" I asked hesitantly.

Blaise raised an eyebrow, and Damon was similarly confused at this turn of events.

But Alpha Burked seemed to understand exactly why I was asking. After all, I caught him and his wife muttering to each other during the ceremony. They might have already guessed that Damon was my other fated mate.

A late start. A strong finish. Damon’s behavior at the end of the ceremony was definitely strong. Did that mean Blaise would be the one to...

No, I could not bring myself to think that.

"My wife has fae blood in her ancestry, and that leads to an uncomfortable connection with the divine. The gods often have plans that are far beyond our understanding, and we are but mere puppets on a string, dancing along to their tune."

"Oh," I said dumbly, feeling like I got dunked in ice-cold water. Alpha Burke had used a lot of words to let me know that Luna Cassidy was most likely not pulling my leg by making up tall tales about my future.

’Until you have truly accepted both of your mates, you will never unlock your true potential. Yet, it is only when you unlock your true potential, that you will lose one of them forever.’

I had accepted both Damon and Blaise, didn’t I? Both their mating marks decorated my shoulders. I was one step closer to losing one of them for good.

"All I can say is that her words can be interpreted in various different ways," Alpha Burke said, with the slightest hint of pity in his voice when he caught sight of my expression of dismay. "Living is making the best of the hand we have been dealt with, incomprehensible it might be at first. Take heart, young Harper, all’s not lost."

"I see," I said woodenly. "Thank you for your wisdom."

"You’re welcome, I hope you find whatever truth you’re seeking." He raised his hand, as though he wanted to pat me on the back, but then he decided to pat Blaise instead, before turning back to rejoin his wife and child.

"What was that about?" Damon asked with narrowed eyes. "What did Luna Cassidy say to you that worried you so badly?"
