Chapter 191: Rejected Mates Reunited II
I whirled around, hoping that the voice I heard didn’t belong to Dahlia. But of course, that was not to be. Dahlia was standing in front of me in a casual T-shirt and jeans. Her hair was already done in an elegant chignon, and the bridal makeup made her face look sweet and delicate, every inch a blushing bride.
What a scam. Everyone here knew her true character, but that didn’t stop me from noticing the way Milo’s eyes focused on her before he reluctantly tore his face away, his throat bobbing with unsaid words.
Even without a wedding dress on, Milo was already affected by her presence in a way Damon never was.
Of course, Dahlia didn’t spare Milo anything more than a contemptuous glance. It was incredible how blind Dahlia was.
Suddenly, I felt very sorry for Milo. No wonder he didn’t want to come. It couldn’t be easy to come all the way here to see his fated mate marry someone else, even if he had full knowledge that nothing would come to fruition. A rejected mate bond was not something most people could bounce back from.
"Dahlia! You’re not resting?" I asked, buying time for Milo and his parents to compose themselves or make themselves scarce if they wished. Besides, if Dahlia had any sense, she should have been resting instead of micromanaging me and everyone else.
"Aren’t you supposed to change into your dress and touch up your makeup? The ceremony is starting soon," I said, my voice the very image of a worried maid of honor. "You’ll sweat and ruin your makeup at this rate!"
"It’s sweet of you to care, Harper, but this is more important," Dahlia declared. "Everything must be perfect at this wedding. Nothing can― nothing must go wrong."
There was a fervent glint in her eyes that promised to rain hell if a flower arrangement was even an inch out of place.
Pity she had no clue what she was in for. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
"Nothing will go wrong," I said, lying straight to her face. "Everything will proceed as planned. You should get dressed soon if you want the wedding to start in time."
"That doesn’t matter, they’ll wait for me anyway," Dahlia said, with full confidence knowing that what she said was a fact. "I’m the main character of this event. What are they going to do? Have Damon marry someone else?"
She laughed to herself; the very thought sounded preposterous.
"Are you really going through with this marriage?" Milo asked, an unreadable expression in his eyes. "I don’t think this is a wise decision. I’m still alive and well. It’s not too late to change your mind."
Both of Milo’s parents shot their son warning looks. I was similarly shocked― was Milo going to tell her about our scheme?
"Oh, you’re still here? I forgot that you existed." Dahlia idly glanced at her fingertips, as though inspecting them for imaginary dirt. "I can’t believe you have the nerve to show up after everything. I guess your head is too thick to know when you should give up. You and Darach are a perfect match. Both of you are equally useless."
Wow. The disrespect she showed him was almost on the level of disrespect Damon first showed me. I couldn’t help but take a step back, so as to not get in the way of the crossfire.
"If you didn’t want me to show up, you shouldn’t have sent the invite to Hornstead to begin with," Milo returned evenly, but his eyes flashed with irritation.
It was still a more sedate reaction than his parents, who seemed ready to rip off Dahlia’s head.
"Part of you wanted me here to see you marry another man. Do you want my congratulations?"
"I cannot be faulted if you wish to cuck yourself." Dahlia shrugged, her lips curling into a careless smirk that was more cruel for its casualness.
My mouth fell open; what a mean thing to say to a fated mate, rejected or not!
"Are you secretly a masochist? You must be, if you showed up here. Or maybe you’re here to finally get a glimpse of finery. Daddy and I agree that even the poor do deserve some boons once in a while. Noblesse oblige and all that. You probably will never eat another meal as good as my wedding feast, so you better dig in while you’re still here."
In my humble opinion, the food from Hornstead was way better, but I wasn’t going to correct Dahlia. She didn’t know I was at Hornstead and I would like to keep it that way for now.
"Either way, I don’t need your congratulations," Dahlia finished victoriously. "Your absence will be my biggest wedding gift. If you and your family dare to do anything to ruin this ceremony, I’ll grind your pack into powder― ah, but what am I saying?"
Dahlia let out a scoff and waved her hand dismissively.
"Like a bunch of useless poor tree-huggers could do anything against Thunderstrike," she said. "And after I marry Damon, you won’t be able to even reach me."
With that devastating last word, she grabbed me by the arm and tugged me away. I blinked in surprise, stumbling blindly after her. freēwebnovel.com
"Keep an eye on them," Dahlia instructed, hissing into my ears. "I have a feeling they’re out to ruin my wedding."
Oh, if only she knew. But I continued to play dumb.
"You mean, they might try to yell ’I object!’ at the wedding?" I asked innocently. "How do I stop them? Dahlia, I’m only a human with two hands, and there are three mouths to stop!"
"You’re right, what am I saying," Dahlia growled and flung away my arm in disappointment. "Asking you is useless. I might as well ask Darach to seduce Milo."
"I can ask Blaise to keep an eye on them," I volunteered, knowing full well that Blaise would do no such thing. "Since that’s part of his best man duties."
"Fine," Dahlia said, fanning herself with her hand. "Gah, this place is heating up."
"It’s because most of the guests are here already. You should get changed," I prodded gently. "Dahlia, you don’t want to be a sweaty, smelly mess in your wedding dress, right?"
"I would never smell bad," Dahlia insisted, but I noticed how she took a quick whiff of her own body. "But you’re right. I should go now and prepare for my wedding. Let me know if anything happens!"
Dahlia stormed off and I smiled, muttering to myself. "Oh, I definitely will."
