Chapter 178: Lines of Fate

I heard Darach and Milo gasp in the background. My own face paled in shock, even as my heart started to beat twice as fast. My eyes darted back to the mess of lines on my palm, trying to make sense of the lines.

How could she figure out this secret from my hands? What witchcraft was this?

"That’s not possible," I said, my voice quavering. "How can someone have two mates at once?"

"It’s rare, but not impossible." Luna Cassidy stroked my palm with her fingers. "But in your case Harper, it will end in tragedy. Until you have truly accepted both of your mates, you will never unlock your true potential. Yet, it is only when you unlock your true potential, that you will lose one of them forever."

I gulped, cold sweat beading down my temples at her ominous warning. Did it mean that either Blaise or Damon would die?

"Is that even possible? I don’t think any werewolf would be fine with sharing." Darach raised an eyebrow. "She can simply reject the other party now that she has Blaise. I don’t think she’ll find anyone better than Fangborne’s Beta."

"Because her other mate is someone more impressive," Luna Cassidy said grimly. "One line is darker than the other, and it swallows the other one whole. A late start, but a strong finish." She raised her head and caught my shell-shocked eyes. "And you know that already, don’t you, Harper? The identity of your second mate."

As if I was compelled, I couldn’t help but nod.

"What? Who is it?" Darach asked curiously. freewebnσvel.cøm

"Yes, child, who is it?" Luna Cassidy asked, her green eyes boring deep into the recesses of my soul.

Almost at once, my mouth opened, and Damon’s name was at the tip of my tongue, just ready to emerge.

Then I felt a strange panic well up within my chest. It didn’t come from me, which meant that it had to come from Blaise. Was he worried about me, or was he also facing difficulties when it came to dealing with Alpha Burke?

No matter what, his panic broke me out of the strange fugue I found myself in, and I could swallow Damon’s name down. However, Luna Cassidy continued to stare at me, waiting for a name.

I could only throw out the first name that came to mind.

"Elijah," I said. Luna Cassidy drew back, slightly disappointed.

"The charlie of Fangborne, that can’t be right."

Milo sighed. "Mom, palm reading isn’t an exact science. You could simply be wrong. I told you this before."

My heart relaxed slightly at Milo’s words. Yes, there was a chance this could simply be a mistake. Maybe the line on my hand deepened after years of being tortured by Aubrey when I was forced to hold onto heavy objects, or after years of washing dishes. Surely that must have done a number on my skin, wouldn’t it? That would have made things worse.

But Luna Cassidy shook her head, determined.

"No, I am never wrong. The spirits have spoken, but you refuse to answer. Soon your obstinacy will be your downfall," Luna Cassidy said with a sigh. "That’s fine, keep your secrets for now, but heed my warning. Eventually, a choice needs to be made."

"My dear, we’re done!" Alpha Burke declared as he burst out from his room, with Blaise at his heels. I chanced a glance at Blaise’s face; he seemed tired, but there was a sense of relief hovering around him. He shot me a small smile.

Guess the negotiations must have gone well enough.

"We’re going to provide Fangborne with food in exchange for their silver and weaponry," he continued. "Sadly, he doesn’t have any sisters for Milo to marry into their family. What a pity. I’m sure they’ll be as good-looking as the brothers. Way better than Dahlia."

I watched Milo’s face darken imperceptibly at his father’s words.

"If Milo isn’t picky, you can have him marry Damon instead," Blaise jibed cheerfully as he took his seat next to me. Now, Milo also had a look of abject disgust on his face. "I’m so glad that we were able to work something out even without the marriage linking our packs."

"What can I say? The thought of spitting in Alpha Thorton’s face is too strong a temptation." Alpha Burke rubbed his hands. "We should start preparing for a wedding gift. Let us not be known as stingy wedding guests."

"We’re attending?" Milo asked. Darach seemed equally reluctant to return back to his own pack.

I blinked in confusion.

"Wait, the wedding is still happening?"

Now that we have gotten Hornstead’s help, Damon can reject Alpha Thorton’s offer at this very moment and make his way back to Fangborne as soon as possible. There was no need for a wedding to take place.

However, Blaise nodded, shooting me a rueful grin. "The wedding still has to happen. How will Hornstead get their revenge otherwise, if everything is simply canceled without fanfare?"

"Damn right, son. There needs to be an utter spectacle to make up for the humiliation our beloved son has suffered under his daughter’s hands," Alpha Burke said, patting Blaise on the shoulder so hard he nearly bowed over with the force of his blow. "If there’s no wedding for us to crash, then this alliance is over."

That must be why I felt the panic from Blaise. He must have tried to argue for the wedding to be canceled, but Alpha Burke was determined to have the wedding happen so that they could see it ruined in person.

How ironic, that the alliance between our packs was also starting with a wedding.

Luna Cassidy clapped her hands delightedly. "How exciting! I can’t wait to prepare a spectacular wedding gift for them all!"

She and her husband exchanged a glance and began cackling in unison.

Milo stood up and prepared to leave the room. "I want no part of this farce of a wedding. Leave me out of your schemes."

"Son, why are you behaving like this?" Luna Cassidy asked. "Don’t tell me you still have some lingering feelings for Dahlia after everything she did to you?"
