Chapter 173: Unluckiest Woman Alive

"So, what did Damon say?" I whispered to Blaise as I handed him his clothes to change into. Blaise hummed as he put on his outfit, running a hand through his windswept hair.

"So you knew I was talking to him?" Blaise asked.

"Of course. You’re good at multitasking," I said with a shrug. "And you were very quiet when I rode you all the way here."

’Here’ was a tiny settlement in the countryside, since it would be near suicidal for Blaise and Darach to sprint the whole way there without rest. Once again, I lamented our lost car and supplies.

Thankfully, we managed to stumble upon a series of huts on the way. If not we would be sleeping in the woods without food or water. Luckily, Darach still had some money on him, so we were also able to get some food and water from the people living there. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

I thought they might figure out who Darach was since his father was so well-known, but it seemed like no one recognized his wolf or his face this far out in the countryside.

The side of Blaise’s lips curled up into a playful smirk. "That’s definitely a sign that my attention was split. I would never keep silent if you were riding me, no matter what form I took."

I smacked his arm in embarrassment, my face burning red as I realized what he was implying.

"Blaise! Be serious about this!"

"Yes, dear," Blaise said with an indulgent smile. "Anyways, long story short, Thunderstrike knows about our exploding car and they’re sending search parties after us, so we must make haste if we don’t want to be brought back and interrogated. I told Damon to stall as much as possible, and he agreed. Hopefully, everything works out."

"I see. Did he say anything about Darach?" I lowered my voice as I craned my head to see if Darach was nearby. He was changing behind another tree for increased privacy, even though Blaise and I had reassured him that we had no intention to peep.

At least this allowed us to discuss such a sensitive matter without him overhearing. I didn’t want him to hear news about Damon, just in case it brought up more bad memories.

After all, if someone had treated me so poorly, just the very sound of his name would cause hives to break out all over my body. Darach didn’t need any more reminders of Damon staying in his home when he was out here in the wilderness with us, trying to stop this engagement.

We didn’t have any other things to lose, but I didn’t want to take any chances, especially now that Thunderstrike was looking for us.

"Well, he did admit he was being an idiot back then. His head wasn’t screwed on right without me." Blaise shrugged. "I also tore him a new asshole for his past behavior, so there’s that."

"Being an idiot?" I repeated blankly at the flimsy justification. "Blaise, when people act like idiots, they usually make a fool of themselves, not bully someone to the form of torture. How could Damon explain matters like this?"

Was Damon refusing to take responsibility for his own past behavior by excusing it with Blaise’s absence? A while ago, Darach had been reluctant to change out of his clothes and shift in front of us, and it was no wonder― when he took off his shirt, I could see how his upper body was riddled with old scars, patches where it didn’t heal right.

How many of those scars were left by Damon?

And when he shifted, those scars that were on his human form were also reflected in his wolf form. Even in the dim lighting, I could tell that Darach’s wolf had lovely brown fur― but he also had plenty of old scars, patches where the fur refused to grow back from.

Damon better have a jolly good reason for his actions. How could he treat Darach the same way Aubrey treated me? I knew Damon wasn’t a perfect man by any means― he had stabbed Lydia on our very first meeting and treated me terribly after, yet perhaps one could justify it as something that happens in a war between packs. It was his right to enjoy the spoils of war.

But bullying a foster meant to build ties in the name of peace? Utterly unfathomable.

Back when the daughter of Shadowpelt’s alpha came to stay for a few months, my father and the whole pack fawned over her as though she was the Moon Goddess herself. She became fast friends with Aubrey and made my life a living hell before she left.

Was Damon insane as a child?

"I’ll get him to explain things personally." Blaise sighed, stroking my head to calm me down. Of course he could sense my anger and disdain at this piss-poor attempt at rationalization. "Try to not bite off his head when you see him again, okay? He’s doing his best now."

"He could do a lot better," I could only snort. "Assuming we even see him before he becomes Dahlia’s husband. Once he’s married, there’s no point in him seeing me."

I was too upset to see Blaise’s eyes widen as he tried to shush me without making any big movements.

"Pardon me for asking, but why would there be no point in seeing you once he’s married?" I jumped in surprise. It was Darach. He was fully clothed, with a look of utter confusion on his face. "You’re his sister-in-law; it’s not like you’re going to marry him. Wait― are you?"

"Don’t be ridiculous," I laughed weakly, even though I wanted to tell the truth. Then again, Darach might have a heart attack. "I have one fated mate, and I don’t need another."

’But I have him. And I want him,’ I couldn’t help but think to myself. freewebnovёl.ƈom

"Good," Darach said, even as he still eyed me and Blaise suspiciously. "Any woman saddled with Damon Valentine for a fated mate must be the most unlucky one alive."

Blaise’s lips curled into a smile. "You don’t say."

I could only continue my nervous laughter, batting my hands as though swatting away that ridiculous thought. Clearing my throat, I quickly changed the subject.

"So," I started, "how far are we from Hornstead?"
