Chapter 171: Accident or Sabotage?
[Note: Words in ’ are thoughts transmitted via the mind-link]
[Third POV]
"What is it? Didn’t you get the memo that this was meant to be a private family dinner?" Dahlia declared imperiously, pointing a fork at him.
The guard quailed, "Yes, but this is an emergency. We have news that there’s a car crash on the hills surrounding the highway!"
"What’s so important about that?" Alpha Thorton frowned, sounding almost bored. "There are foolish drivers all the time. Some feckless moron lost control of his car again, despite all the signs warning them of the speed limits. How is this important enough to interrupt my dinner?"
"The description of the car matches what Master Darach was driving when he left the compound!"
Damon’s chair fell to the floor with a loud clatter. He was already out of his seat before he even thought about it, his mind frantically screaming at Blaise to answer his mind-link, preparing to snatch a vehicle to chase after them both.
’Blaise, Blaise, I swear to god, you and Harper better be fine or there will be hell to pay!’
In contrast, Alpha Thorton was very unbothered by this terrible turn of events, despite his son being mentioned. "Like I said, a feckless moron lost control of his car. I see nothing to worry about, he knows how to come back home."
"Blaise and Harper were sitting in his car!" Damon burst out, enraged at his nonchalance. "We need to send a search party!"
Alpha Thorton snorted cavalierly. "I highly doubt any of them would be injured by a mere car crash, but if it makes you happy, I shall send people out to keep an eye for them."
While he said this, Damon internally cursed himself for his loose tongue. If they sent out a search party, there was no way the three of them would be able to achieve their goals.
But Damon would never be able to live with himself if he had sacrificed them in an attempt to get out of a marriage with Dahlia. He would rather marry her and have a million of her stupid children with the letter ’D’ starting their names than to abandon them to their own devices.
’Damon, how are you holding up?’ Blaise’s voice suddenly sounded in his head, causing him to jolt in surprise. He sounded winded, as though he had been running for a while. Damon kept his face even as he thanked Alpha Thorton for his help.
"Excuse me. I have lost my appetite," Damon said hurriedly, rushing out of the dining room before Dahlia and her father even had time to reply. He needed to respond to Blaise’s message.
"But what about―" Dahlia protested, yet Alpha Thorton shook his head, narrowing his eyes at Damon’s retreating back. This Damon boy was cunning yes, but did not have the benefit of experience that Alpha Thorton had. freewebnøvel.coɱ
Anyone skilled enough could tell that Damon simply did not want anyone to realize he was communicating with his brother, which meant that he wanted news of his brother’s survival to be kept a secret.
Funny behavior from someone so desperate that he wanted Alpha Thorton to send a search party. Shouldn’t he be wanting his brother to be brought back to Thunderstrike safe and sound? Let alone his human mate?
"Daddy, why did you stop me? I want to help him find his brother and his wife!" Dahlia protested.
"No, Dahlia," Alpha Thorton said, steel in his eyes. "Your job is to stick to Damon from now on. Make sure he never leaves the compound. Stay with him for all hours if possible."
Dahlia’s eyes widened before she nodded. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
"Yes, Daddy. I’ll tie him up if I have to!"

’Blaise! Where have you been?! You were meant to report back hours ago,’ Damon demanded hotly as he slammed the door to his private suite. Finally, he would get some privacy.
’What’s this I hear about an exploding car?’
’Well sorry, but I got distracted. Things went a little more sideways than we expected,’ Blaise replied ruefully. When Blaise said things went sideways, he could mean something as simple as forgetting to eat a meal to losing sight of an entire wendigo colony.
Now that Damon knew precisely what went sideways, he wanted to smack him, but unfortunately, that was not possible with the mind-link. He would save it for when he saw Blaise in person.
’Oh, you got the news already? That takes the wind out of my sails.’
Blaise, that fucking asshole, had the nerve to sound disappointed over the mind-link.
’Stop giving me cryptic remarks and tell me what’s going on,’ Damon growled out. ’How did the car accident happen in the first place?’
’Honestly, it’s all because of you,’ Blaise said.
"What!" Damon actually exclaimed out loud before snapping his mouth shut at the lapse in judgment. Blaise couldn’t hear him anyway. ’That’s impossible, I wasn’t even there. Explain yourself! Are you and Harper hurt?’ Damon telegraphed instead, an ache growing in his temples.
He wanted nothing more than to rejoin their side, yet he was forced to stay put, as useless as a bird in a cage. The moment Thunderstrike got wind of his absence, he could kiss their aid goodbye, and with it, Fangborne’s chances of surviving the winter.
’We’re all fine, Darach included,’ Blaise included pointedly, his tone sharpening at the end. ’This entire mess happened because Darach told us a very interesting tale of your past exploits. I wish I hadn’t asked about how he knew you from before. We would still have a car otherwise.’
Damon’s heart sank. He was right; Darach was out for revenge for how Damon treated him in the past. ’Did Darach destroy the car on purpose? I knew he couldn’t be trusted with anything―’
’Damon,’ Blaise’s voice rang in his head loud and clear, disapproval radiating from every syllable. ’It was an accident. But you should be very grateful that he loves his sister more than he hates you.’
