Chapter 169: Archnemesis

I groaned in pain as I felt my body slam against the back seat after I was jostled around the mountain paths.

Thankfully, the seat belt held firm, if not I might find myself with a lot more broken limbs than I was comfortable with.

I heaved a sigh of relief. "At least we’re fine now." We weren’t careening off a cliff, even if our car was damaged. Surely we could still fix it. I would take whatever victories I could get.

As if the gods above heard my words and decided to taunt me, the car bonnet immediately burst into flames. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

"Fuck, we need to get out of here, it’s gonna blow!" Blaise swore, and the three of us made a mad dash from the car, running like the wind. Blaise all but carried me in his arms, sprinting across the forest floor with no care for poor Darach.

Then, our car exploded. I heard the loud boom first before I even caught sight of the car going up in flames, with the brightness of a homing beacon to our location.

The three of us managed to get to a safe enough distance, trodding uphill back to the side of the road. Blaise eventually felt safe enough to put me down, and I turned back and watched the flames rise higher in the air with no signs of stopping. My dismay grew stronger with every passing second that smoke filled the air.

It would be great if our goal was to get rescued. Unfortunately, we could not be, since getting rescued would ultimately mean that Thunderstrike would know our whereabouts. It would be ridiculously difficult to explain how we were miles away in the middle of nowhere.

More importantly, it meant that our mission would end in failure.

"What are we going to do now?" I asked, wiping my face with my hands.

The heat from the flames was causing me to sweat, and the smoke was causing my eyes to water and my throat to burn. Blaise gave me a worried gaze as he looked me over for any injuries, frantically looking for water to help me, but all our supplies were in that exploded car.

"We’ll go on foot," Darach decided, breathing deeply. "Unless you want to turn back now?"

"Of course we’re not going back," Blaise clucked his tongue. "But I must say, after finding out about your past with Damon, I wonder why you’re sparing so much effort to help him ruin his wedding. Your own family would toss you out for such an act."

Ah. Blaise was suspicious of Darach. He thought Darach might have lost control of the car on purpose, possibly to injure the both of us and make sure nothing could stop the impending nuptials. It was possible, but I honestly doubted Darach did something so drastic on purpose.

It was Blaise and I who prodded about his past with Damon to begin with. If we didn’t, he would have simply driven us in silence, until morning light and then have Blaise take the wheel.

Darach laughed weakly, but there was a crazed look in his eyes as he glared at us. "You think I want such a scumbag as my brother-in-law? Do you think I want my future nephews and nieces to come from his seed? From a man that tormented me in my youth?"

I had nothing to say to that. If I were in his shoes, I would spare nothing to ruin the wedding, and perhaps ruin Damon’s reputation further too.

"I will never let my sister marry a man that holds a harem of women. He blatantly disrespects the Moon Goddess’s intentions of making us meant for a single person!" I flinched a little at his words.

"Not to mention as a boy, he took his anger out on someone simply unfortunate enough to be in his way. What if he enacts such violence on my sister or on their future children? Who will protect her then, if she’s in a pack so far away?"

Now Blaise was quiet, giving Darach a considering look. Meanwhile, I realized the reason why Darach was so shocked when he first caught sight of Blaise next to me when we walked to his car. Blaise and Damon did look very alike, and I suppose no one wanted to see his worst nightmare in the flesh without warning.

"So perish the thought. I would rather die than let my sister marry him. I want Damon Valentine to suffer more than anyone else, but not at the expense of my sister’s happiness!"

"It’s fine if the both of you want to turn back," Darach continued, turning away. "I’ll ruin this wedding myself if I have to."

I could tell he was determined to walk the entire length of the journey if necessary.

"We’ll go with you, right Blaise?" I prodded, elbowing Blaise.

Blaise nodded. "I’m not leaving you to go off alone with him, especially now that the car is gone," he said. "Without it, we don’t have a chance in hell to make it back in time though. Do you have any suggestions, short of shifting into wolves and running the whole way there?"

"We’d probably die of overexertion, so no," Darach said simply. "Instead, we’ll go as far as possible as werewolves, and then we’ll hitchhike."

Blaise laughed in disbelief. I felt similarly stunned.

"I can’t believe I’m hearing this word after so long," Blaise muttered. "Harper, be a dear and hold onto my clothes for me? I’ll need them back when I transform."

I nodded, and Darach squawked, hastily averting his eyes as Blaise stripped down to nothing. I gathered all his clothes and tied them into a firm bundle. A few sharp cracks later, his wolf form stood in front of me, nuzzling my face. I broke into a soft smile, kissing the top of his snout.

Despite the less-than-ideal circumstances, I was glad to see his wolf form again.

"Okay, your turn," I turned to Darach expectantly. "Give me your clothes, I’ll hold them for you."

Darach spluttered. "I can’t expect you to do this! It’s improper!"
