Chapter 147: A Funeral For My Youth II
I paused. The right answer was of course a solid no, but I realized that I could not spit out such a definite reply. As someone raised in the heart of a werewolf community, there should not be any debates about it. Vampires were a werewolf’s greatest enemy.
Yet, on the other side of my equation was my mother, the first person who cared and loved me unconditionally. When she was gone, it felt like every star in the sky vanished, leaving me in pitch-black darkness. If she had not died, I wouldn’t have to live with my father and his pack and be treated like I was worth less than nothing.
Didn’t I owe it to my mom to find out what happened to her? Didn’t I owe myself that form of closure? fгeewebnovёl.com
My hesitance was all the answer Damon needed. He gave me a disappointed look and turned away from me, and my heart began to clench. It was as though I was experiencing visceral heartache from his deep disappointment.
"Damon, I..." I started, trying to explain myself. "Back then, I did not trust you or Blaise. I didn’t like the both of you either. If Gus had told me he was a vampire, I might have still chosen to go with him if it meant getting more information about my mother."
Damon closed his eyes, as though every word I said was stabbing him in the gut.
"But it’s not the case now anymore," I said firmly. "I will still go to Gus, but this time, I’ll let you know in advance. I won’t keep secrets from you anymore, but I cannot lose this opportunity. Damon, please try to see things from my point of view. I have lived years without learning anything about my mother’s situation. I cannot afford to let this opportunity slip away."
"But I can let you know about it, so you may join me. If you wish," I added, not wishing to be too presumptuous. My mother was important to me, but Damon was a busy man who had his head full of pack business. "Or I can ask Blaise―"
"No," Damon interrupted quickly, causing me to blink in surprise. "You will come to me and only me for this situation, do you understand?" freёwebnovel.com
I nodded, even as I didn’t quite understand the rationale. Technically, Blaise should know about this too, but perhaps Damon didn’t want to burden Blaise, especially in his weakened condition. I felt relief flood through my body as the situation was resolved― then I realized it wasn’t my relief.
It was Damon’s.
I guessed he simply wanted to make sure I would not act without his knowledge. As a pack alpha and as a fated mate, I could understand his reasoning.
"We can make our way to the house then?" I asked hopefully. "You might be able to find more clues than I did. I didn’t manage to stay long before I heard footsteps from the top floor."
"You’re really audacious, dancing so close to the edge of death," Damon said, shaking his head. There was a faint note of admiration in his voice, the same way one would admire someone for dancing on train tracks when a train was hurtling through the tunnels, headlights blaring in your direction.
"I have had pretty good luck so far," I said, and we left the house.
However, before we could even get in the car, Damon suddenly stopped and held out a hand. His nostrils flared, and he took a long sniff.
"A vampire was just here," Damon said, his eyes glowing with hatred. "We missed that damned bloodsucker!"
"Can you tell how far they went?" I asked. "We could chase them down."
Damon glowered, before pointing south, back to the town. "That filthy thing probably wanted to blend in with the humans!"
"Let’s go then, we have to catch them before they end up like Doctor Thomas," I said worriedly, and Damon was off in a flash, his growl reverberating through the air, raising the strands of baby hair on my neck. That was a dire warning against intruders on his turf if I ever heard one.
Then, I suddenly remembered Damon saying that this was a declaration of war against Fangborne. Damon had to respond in kind.
He was still in his human form, yet his growls were already menacing enough. If Damon could transform into a werewolf in town, those vampires would stand no chance against him.
We dashed towards the source of the scent, only to find ourselves back at the front of the hospital. Only this time, there was a familiar face waiting― and she looked just as surprised to see the both of us the first time around.
"Oh, hello! Fancy seeing you here again! Are you here for a follow-up?" It was Nurse Elise, but she wasn’t dressed in her uniform from before. Instead, she wore a leather jacket paired with a T-shirt, along with jeans and a sling bag.
"Are you not working already?" I asked curiously, watching Damon from the corner of my eyes. Now that I knew that Everhaven was filled with vampires, I was suspecting every single individual I came into contact with.
Damon gave a minuscule shake of his head, and my shoulders relaxed slightly. It seemed that Elise was an ordinary human.
"No, I’m off duty for now. I’m actually on my way to my part-time job," Elise said, her eyes gleaming with excitement. That look sent alarm bells ringing in my head; no one should be so happy at the thought of doing more work, even if they needed the money.
Also, whoever heard of a place that scheduled shifts so strangely? We saw Elise a mere hour ago. It wasn’t even lunchtime. Something didn’t add up.
"Would the both of you like to join me?" Elise asked, her eyes darting between me and Damon, eventually focusing on Damon.
"No thanks," I said with a scowl, attracting her attention. "We’re a little busy at the moment looking for someone."
"Are you looking for Gus?"
