Chapter 130: Doctor Thomas II

I couldn’t hear what the person on the other end said, but whatever it was, it made Damon scowl more heavily, deepening the furrows between his eyes. Irritation welled within me.

"Oh don’t give me that fucking bullshit!" Damon yelled into the phone, his voice echoing loudly on the deserted streets. If I lived here, I would have reported him for the noise. "Where the fuck are you? You can either tell me right now, or I’ll knock on every single door in this damn town until I pull you out from whatever rock you’re hiding under. I’m sure your neighbors will be very interested to know why someone like me is looking for you."

How ominous. But the threat worked, for Damon’s face cleared.

"I’ll look for you now. If you dare fall asleep, I’ll kill you," Damon swore before hanging up.

"Guess we got the address," I said, rolling my shoulders. "Which way is it?"

"It’s a twenty-minute walk from here since I don’t trust the buses to show up on time," Damon said with a frown. "I’ll get there in ten minutes if I run. Are you up to accompanying me?" Damon asked. "If you can’t handle it, you can just sit around here or something."

I understood the underlying meaning in his words; Damon was offering me a graceful out, in case I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t want to drag him down, but I was certain I could at least handle a ten-minute sprint in my condition. Blaise’s life depended on me.

"Let’s go then, we have no time to waste," I said. "Which way do we run?"

Damon’s face broke out in a wolfish grin of approval. "Follow me."

And off we went.

The town’s lights faded into a blur as I fought to keep sight of Damon’s rapidly retreating back. I didn’t know where I was actually going; all the streetlights looked the same, depressingly dim, as though this entire town lacked electricity. We ran on uneven paths, crossing roads that had barely any traffic. It seemed that we were somehow running all the way to the other side of the town, near the wilderness.

Eventually, Damon stopped in front of a tiny two-story house nestled in between two stone walls. I placed a hand against the stone walls and wheezed. Goddamn. Why did this doctor decide to live in the middle of nowhere?

Damon, of course, barely broke a sweat. He immediately banged his fist against the door.

"Doctor Thomas, you better be inside here!"

"Coming, coming!" a voice from inside said.

The door swung open to reveal an old portly man wearing glasses, who looked none too pleased about being interrupted at this time of the night. He was wearing a fluffy bathrobe over his plaid pajamas, along with a pair of fuzzy bedroom slippers. frёewebnoѵēl.com

"Took you long enough," Damon grumbled, all but pushing the good doctor aside to make his way into the house.

I wanted to smack him. Would it kill him to be a little more polite?

"This damn brat..." Doctor Thomas muttered under his breath.

"Thank you for inviting us to your home," I said instead, following behind Damon. Doctor Thomas blinked in surprise, before replying with markedly more enthusiasm than he showed Damon.

"Hello! I didn’t realize that Damon was bringing a guest!" He gave me a quick once over and hurriedly held out his hand for me to shake.

I took it; his palm was calloused but warm.

"And who might you be? Forgive me if I sound offensive, but you seem a little too... normal to be hanging out with Damon. Is he threatening you?"

"Oh, fuck off, old man," Damon yelled from inside the house. "I can hear you!"

"I know, that’s why I said it," Doctor Thomas yelled back before waiting for my reply.

"I’m Harper, nice to meet you," I said with a smile. Judging from his words, Doctor Thomas must have known about Damon’s true identity.

Yet, call it my intuition, but I wasn’t ready to fully trust him no matter how genial Doctor Thomas might seem. I decided to keep my identity as Damon’s mate a secret. But before I could spit out a lie to placate Doctor Thomas, Damon interrupted us with a scowl on his face.

"Stop dawdling at the door," Damon said, glowering at the both of us. "Doctor, I’m here because of an emergency."

"Of course you are. You’re never here for a social visit." Doctor Thomas rolled his eyes and made his way into the house, sitting on his plush armchair and gesturing at me to take a seat. He did not give Damon any permission, but that didn’t stop Damon from helping himself to a chair. "Would you like a drink?"

"No," Damon said.

"I was talking to your pretty friend over there, Harper. She looked exhausted. Did you make her run all the way here?"

"That’s none of your business," Damon growled out.

"I’m fine, I have water," I hastily added, drinking the water I brought. Luckily I had the foresight to pack it; I wasn’t going to let a stranger give me a drink.

Doctor Thomas seemed to be watching me drink with a little too much interest than I was comfortable with. Had he never seen a woman before?

Damon smacked his hand against the table, causing Doctor Thomas to jump in surprise. "Give me a scope."

"What? Now?" Doctor Thomas’s eyes nearly bulged out in surprise. "You want me to conduct a colonoscopy for you in my house? Things must be dire indeed."

"No, it’s not for me!" Damon let out an irritated groan.

"Then... Harper, do you need a scope?" the doctor asked, seemingly less reluctant at the thought. His eyes roved all over my body, and I gave Damon an irritated glance. "I suppose I could if times are desperate..."

"Doctor, I need the goddamn machine from the hospital. Give it to me, along with the X-ray machine," Damon demanded.

"That’s ridiculous," Doctor Thomas replied immediately, without even spending time to consider his request. "Why should the hospital give you any of our equipment? Without it, we can’t work!"
