Chapter 117: Sharp As Ever I

"I can’t even shoot a gun," I protested even as I did as he asked.

The rifle hung awkwardly on my body as if I were a child playing dress-up with my mother’s handbags. My hands started to sweat as I stared down at the trigger. I was more liable to shoot off my own toes than any opponent, unlike Elijah, who seemed to wield it as an extension of his body.

"Stay behind me then," Elijah said as he passed me another vest and another torn shirt from the second body. "Put both of these on yourself. You need the extra protection and you need to conceal your scent. Or you can rub it on yourself if you prefer."

I took the shirt and the vest with a wince, sending a mental prayer to the dead werewolf before I put it on. Elijah then continued.

"We’ll find Damon. If Alpha Natan is alive, my priority will be shooting him to keep Damon safe."

"If Damon is dead..."

Elijah shook his head. "Damon will never lose to the likes of someone as pathetic as him. And you can sense him, can’t you Harper? He’s still fighting."

I focused on the bond and nodded. Damon’s rage was still a palpable sensation at the back of my mind. He also seemed... amused? Entertained? I wondered where my mate got his confidence from. He was completely unarmed and unable to shift in a territory filled with hostile werewolves!

Maybe everyone in Fangborne was a bit off their rocker, and Damon was the most unhinged one of all. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

"Yeah, he is," I said to Elijah. "He seems to be having fun."

"Good." Elijah smiled sunnily. "Then we’ll be just fine!"

My theory that everyone in Fangborne was a bit off their rocker was starting to seem more possible by the second. Nevertheless, I followed Elijah’s lead as we crept out of the room. They hadn’t sent more people after us, and the halls were strangely deserted. Yet, I could hear the sounds of screams and crashing noises coming noticeably from the Alpha’s meeting room. freēwebnovel.com

I relaxed slightly. It wasn’t Damon’s voice I was hearing. Elijah gestured for me to hide.

"Any time now," Elijah whispered. "They’ll either bring more men in to burst through the door, or Damon will burst out himself. Either way, we’ll get to see him."

True enough, there was a mad rush for the door a mere minute later. More werewolves flooded the corridor, presumably due to Alpha Natan’s order. They were so focused on their task that they didn’t even bother to pay attention to the two additional scents from us, thinking that we were their own.

Elijah’s idea of stealing their shirts was foul, but it worked. Suddenly, I realized why Damon made such a cheerful affable man his charlie, when their personalities were as different as night and day.

I couldn’t help but worry about Damon― those were a lot of werewolves! Even without guns, all it took was one lucky hit. But before they could even throw open the doors to confront Damon, Elijah struck.

He lifted his rifle and began shooting at their backs, creating havoc. My eyes widened in shock as I watched skilled warriors fall from silver bullets shot straight into their skulls. The air was quickly thickening with the scent of blood as their screams of shock filled the air.

Elijah had used the element of distraction with devastating effect, demolishing a bulk of the reinforcements before they realized that they were being shot at from the back by someone that they thought was an ally. They turned around, finally spotting us.

"Get him!"

"It’s Alpha Damon’s dog!"

"Get the woman too!"

Elijah’s only reaction to their words was to reload the rifle and continue firing at them, causing them to shriek and duck for cover with limited success as they tried their best to retaliate with their own bullets.

I flinched as they started firing back; I could only hide behind Elijah and get out of his way, less a stray bullet hit me instead.

Yet, Elijah never cowered, never wavered. He simply continued shooting without pause, nearly every bullet drawing blood. My heart was in my throat as the sound of bullets flying reverberated through my ears.

But soon, what I dreaded happened― Elijah had finally run out of ammunition, while the remaining werewolves still had some to spare. The tables had turned against our favor, and the survivors quickly surrounded us, leaving us with nowhere to escape.

Elijah quickly put his body between me and the wall, shielding me from their bullets.

"Elijah!" I cried out in worry as I saw him stagger. I gasped as I caught sight of the rapidly growing red stain that was forming on his shirt. The vest was torn due to the sheer amount of firepower it had to endure, losing its protective capabilities. "You got shot!"

"It’s fine," Elijah grunted out. "Give me your rifle."

I could only dumbly hand it over. After all, it was a white elephant on me, but in Elijah’s hands, it was a weapon of mass destruction. Still, my eyes continued to focus on his blood-stained shirt while Elijah continued to use his body as a human shield for my sake.

"Make sure to stay behind me."

I nodded because what else could I do? I frantically called for Damon through the bond, telegraphing my want and need for help. I could not send out an exact message, but I hoped he knew we were near, and we needed him!

Elijah staggered again and this time he fell, one knee hitting the ground. I grabbed him and tried to pull him behind me. At this rate, Elijah would bleed out before Damon appeared!

"Don’t shoot the woman! Alpha Natan needs her alive to make a bargain!" One of the werewolves screamed out and the shooting hastily stopped. I quickly used this chance to stand in front of Elijah, repaying the favor.

I guess the news that I was Damon’s mate must have got out somehow.

"Touch a hair on my head, and Damon will rend you from limb to limb!" I said threateningly, with bravado that I did not feel. Elijah was looking too pale for my liking. "Where is Alpha Damon?! Bring him to us right now!"

Before Ironclaw’s werewolves could even reply, a heavy presence filled the air as the doors to the room were thrown wide open.
