Chapter 40: Chapter 39: The Mark

FOUR HOURS SINCE SEPARATION - 10:00 AM

The marks had spread.

What had started as delicate patterns on Eve’s back now covered her shoulders, crept down her arms, and were beginning to trace along her ribcage. Each new line that appeared came with a flash of burning pain that made her gasp and clutch at the sheets.

"Your temperature is rising faster now," Dr. Thorne said, her voice tight with concern. "99.8. Your body is fighting the spell, trying to break through the binding."

"Is that good or bad?" Eve managed.

"Both," Dr. Thorne admitted. "Good because it means your true nature is strong, fighting to emerge. Bad because the faster this happens, the more violent the transformation is likely to be."

Eve’s vision swam. The colors that had seemed too bright before were now almost painful to look at. She could see things she’d never noticed before....the individual dust motes floating in the sunlight, the microscopic imperfections in the ceiling paint, the subtle gradations of color in Mrs. Blackwood’s gray hair.

"Supernatural senses," Dr. Thorne explained when Eve mentioned this. "Your true nature is bleeding through as the spell weakens. You’ll start noticing sounds differently too. Smells will become more intense. All your senses will heighten."

As if to prove her point, Eve suddenly became aware of her own heartbeat. Not just feeling it, but hearing it....a steady thump-thump-thump that echoed through her entire body. And beneath that, fainter but unmistakable, three other heartbeats.

The brothers.

Even at this distance....they had to be over a hundred miles away by now....she could hear their hearts beating in perfect synchronization with hers.

"I can hear them," Eve whispered, awed and terrified. "Their heartbeats. I can hear their heartbeats."

Dr. Thorne’s eyebrows rose. "That’s... unprecedented. Even for bonded mates, that level of connection at this distance is remarkable."

"Is it because of the soul bond?" Eve asked. "Because we’re not just regular mates?" freewebnoveℓ.com

"Possibly," Dr. Thorne said. "Or possibly because whatever you’re transforming into has enhanced sensory abilities that are starting to manifest. Either way, it’s a good sign. It means the bond is holding even stronger than I anticipated."

Eve focused on those heartbeats....on the steady rhythm that matched her own. As long as she could hear them, they were alive. They were okay. They were coming back to her.

She held onto that thought as the pain increased, as the marks spread further across her skin, as her body temperature continued to climb degree by inexorable degree.

She held onto the sound of their hearts beating and told herself she could survive this.

She had to survive this.

Because they were coming back.

And she would be here when they did.

FIVE HOURS SINCE SEPARATION - 11:00 AM

Eve’s entire torso was covered in glowing marks now. They spread like wildfire across her skin....beautiful and terrifying in equal measure. Golden lines and swirls and patterns so intricate they looked like ancient calligraphy written in light.

Dr. Thorne had taken dozens of photographs, documenting the progression with clinical precision even as her expression grew increasingly worried.

"Temperature is 101.2," she reported. "Heart rate is 125. Blood pressure is dangerously elevated at 152 over 98. You’re showing all the signs of severe physiological stress."

"Pain level is... I don’t know anymore," Eve admitted, her voice hoarse. "Ten? Fifteen? It’s everywhere. Everything hurts."

"I’m going to increase your pain medication," Dr. Thorne decided. "This is stronger....it might make you drowsy, might affect your cognitive function slightly, but it should help."

Another injection. Another brief wave of relief that barely took the edge off the agony radiating through Eve’s entire body.

"The marks are spreading faster now," Mrs. Blackwood observed. "Look....you can see them moving. Actual movement across her skin."

It was true. Eve could see the golden lines crawling across her arms like living things, spreading toward her hands and down toward her legs. The binding spell was unraveling in real-time, and there was nothing any of them could do to stop it. freeweɓnøvel.com

"How long now?" Eve asked.

Dr. Thorne studied the pattern. "Hours. Maybe twelve at most. The coverage is accelerating exponentially. Once the marks reach your extremities....fingers, toes, face....the spell will shatter completely."

Twelve hours. The brothers were still at least sixty-seven hours away. Even if they turned around right now, they wouldn’t make it in time.

Eve was going to transform alone.

The reality of that settled over her like a shroud. All the preparation, all the claiming, all the desperate attempts to reinforce the bond....none of it would be enough. She was going to face the most dangerous moment of her life without her mates there to anchor her.

"I’m scared," Eve whispered, tears sliding down her face. "I’m so scared."

Mrs. Blackwood moved to sit beside the bed, taking Eve’s hand carefully.....avoiding the glowing marks. "Fear is natural. Fear is human. But you’re stronger than your fear, Miss Chen. You’ve been strong every day since you met those boys. You can be strong now."

"What if I’m not?" Eve asked. "What if I transform into something terrible? What if I hurt you? What if I lose myself completely and never come back?"

"Then we deal with it," Dr. Thorne said firmly. "But I don’t think you will. I’ve seen your connection with them. I’ve watched how the bond responds to you. That kind of love, that kind of connection....it doesn’t create monsters. It creates survivors."

"I want to believe that," Eve said.

"Then believe it," Mrs. Blackwood urged. "Believe in yourself. Believe in the bond. Believe that you were meant to survive this."

Eve closed her eyes and tried to find that belief. Tried to find the strength she’d need to survive the next twelve hours....and all the hours after that until the brothers returned.

She focused on their heartbeats, still audible beneath the pounding of her own. Focused on the thin golden thread of the bond that refused to break no matter how far they stretched it.

Focused on the promise she’d made.

I’ll survive.

She would. She had to.

Because somewhere out there, three alphas were racing to save innocent lives, trusting that she’d still be here when they returned.

And Eve Chen did not break her promises.

Not even to herself.

Not even when it hurt this much.

Not even when survival seemed impossible.

She would fight. She would endure. She would transform.

And she would be here when they came home.

No matter what it cost her.

No matter what she became.

She would survive.
